In Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry, extended-response questions often require you to write structured essays that demonstrate both factual knowledge and higher-order thinking. Mastering a clear writing framework can turn a good answer into a top-band response.

1. Decoding the Question | 解读题目

Before you begin writing, carefully read the question and underline the command word, such as “describe”, “explain”, or “evaluate”.

动笔之前,仔细阅读题目,并划出指令词,例如 “describe”、”explain” 或 “evaluate”。

Identify the topic-specific keywords, for example “reactivity”, “equilibrium”, “electrolysis”, and decide which chemical principles apply.

Always check how many marks are available; a 6-mark question typically requires three to four well-developed points with clear explanations.

2. The PEEL Writing Framework | PEEL 写作框架

  • Point – Start with a clear topic sentence that directly answers the question.

    观点 – 以一个清晰的主题句开头,直接回应题目。

  • Evidence – Support your point with chemical facts, equations, or data, such as the reactivity trend or a balanced equation.

    证据 – 用化学事实、方程式或数据支持观点,例如反应性趋势或配平后的方程式。

  • Explanation – Explain why the evidence is relevant, using scientific reasoning like electron loss, collision theory, or Le Chatelier’s principle.

  • Link – Briefly link back to the question or transition to the next paragraph to maintain flow.

    连接 – 简要回扣题目或过渡到下一段,保持行文流畅。


3. Incorporating Equations & Diagrams | 融入方程式与图表

Where appropriate, include a balanced chemical equation to strengthen your explanation. For example, when discussing the reaction between sodium and water, you could write: 2Na(s) + 2H₂O(l) → 2NaOH(aq) + H₂(g).
