📚 Year 11 CIE German: High-Frequency Topics and Common Mistakes Analysis | Year 11 CIE 德语:高频考点与易错题分析

The CIE IGCSE German exam for Year 11 tests reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. While the syllabus covers a wide range of topics, certain grammar points and question types appear year after year, and students often repeat the same errors. This revision guide highlights the high-frequency topics and analyses the most common mistakes so you can maximise your marks.

CIE IGCSE 德语考试面向 Year 11,考查阅读、写作、听力和口语四大技能。尽管大纲涵盖广泛的话题,但某些语法点和题型年复一年地出现,而且学生经常重复相同的错误。本复习指南重点归纳高频考点并分析最常见的错误,帮助你在考试中拿到更高分数。

1. Verb Conjugation and Tenses | 动词变位与时态

Mastering tense formation is essential. In the present tense, regular verbs follow clear patterns, but strong verbs change stem vowels: e.g., lesen → du liest, fahren → du fährst. The perfect tense requires the correct auxiliary (haben or sein) and a past participle. Verbs of movement or state change (gehen, fahren, werden, sterben) use sein. The past participle of regular verbs is ge + stem + t; irregular verbs often end in -en with stem changes (e.g., geschrieben). The future tense uses werden + infinitive and the infinitive goes to the end of the clause. A frequent mistake is confusing the auxiliaries: “Ich habe gegangen” is wrong; correct is “Ich bin gegangen”. Also, forgetfulness with stem changes in the du/er forms costs many marks.

2. Cases and Adjective Endings | 格位与形容词词尾

German has four cases: nominative, accusative, dative and genitive. Adjective endings depend on the article and the case. After definite articles (der/die/das), the adjective usually ends in -e or -en. After indefinite articles (ein/eine/ein), mixed declension appears: e.g., ein großer Mann (nominative) but einen großen Mann (accusative). With no article, strong declension shows the case endings clearly: kalter Wein, mit kaltem Wein. The most common errors are forgetting to add -n in the dative plural (mit netten Leuten) and mixing up the adjective endings after possessive pronouns (mein, dein, etc.), which follow the same pattern as ein-words.

3. Prepositions and Their Case Government | 介词及其支配的格

Prepositions are a major headache because they govern specific cases. Accusative-only prepositions include durch, für, gegen, ohne, um. Dative-only prepositions include aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu. The two-way prepositions (an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen) take the dative for location (Wo?) and the accusative for direction (Wohin?). Students often misjudge the movement vs. location distinction: “Ich gehe in die Stadt” (accusative) but “Ich bin in der Stadt” (dative). Fixed verb-preposition combinations (sich freuen auf, denken an, warten auf, Angst haben vor) are tested heavily, and getting the case wrong after the preposition in such phrases is a classic error.

介词是一大难点,因为它们支配特定的格。只接宾格的介词有 durch, für, gegen, ohne, um。只接与格的介词有 aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu。双向介词(an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen)用于位置(Wo?)时接与格,用于方向(Wohin?)时接宾格。学生经常误判动静之别:”Ich gehe in die Stadt”(宾格),但 “Ich bin in der Stadt”(与格)。固定的动词-介词搭配(sich freuen auf, denken an, warten auf, Angst haben vor)考查频率极高,弄错这些短语中介词后的格是一个典型错误。

4. Word Order: Verb Second and Verb Final | 语序:动词第二顺位与动词在末尾

In main clauses, the conjugated verb must be in second position. Any element (time, manner, place, subject) can occupy the first position, but the verb stays second: “Morgen fahre ich nach Berlin”. In subordinate clauses introduced by dass, weil, obwohl, wenn, als, damit, the conjugated verb moves to the very end. A widespread mistake is putting the verb too early in a weil-clause: “Ich bin müde, weil ich habe viel gearbeitet” is incorrect; it must be “weil ich viel gearbeitet habe”. Additionally, with modal verbs in the perfect tense, the double infinitive structure (hat … machen können) causes confusion. The TeKaMoLo rule (temporal, causal, modal, local) helps order adverbials but is often ignored, leading to awkward sentences.

5. Reflexive Verbs and Pronoun Position | 反身动词与代词位置

Reflexive verbs often trip up candidates. The reflexive pronoun (mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich) agrees with the subject and stays close to the verb. In main clauses it follows the conjugated verb; in subordinate clauses it stands right after the conjunction: “weil ich mich freue”. Many students forget the reflexive pronoun entirely or use the wrong form, especially with dative reflexives (sich etwas vorstellen, sich die Hände waschen) where the pronoun becomes mir, dir, etc. Another pitfall is confusing reciprocal use (“Wir treffen uns”) with one-sided actions. In the perfect tense, haben appears with the participle and the reflexive pronoun remains in its usual slot: “Ich habe mich gefreut”. For inverted word order after “dann” or “deshalb”, the pronoun still follows the verb: “Dann hat er sich beschwert”.

6. Subordinating Conjunctions and Verb Position | 从属连词与动词位置

Subordinating conjunctions push the conjugated verb to the end. The most common ones tested are dass, weil, obwohl, wenn (if/whenever), als (when – past single event), bevor, nachdem, während, bis, sodass. A particularly tricky point is the difference between wenn and als: use als for a one-time event in the past, and wenn for repeated events or present/future conditions. The conjunction falls under the “verb-final” rule. Many students forget that the verb must move to the end even in longer clauses: “Ich glaube, dass er morgen mit dem Bus zur Schule fährt” (fahr..t at the end). In writing, a missing comma before the subordinate clause is a common punctuation error that examiners penalise.

7. Commonly Confused Word Pairs | 常见易混淆词汇

Some word pairs confuse even higher-tier candidates. kennen vs. wissen: kennen means to know a person/place/thing through familiarity, while wissen refers to knowing facts. “Ich kenne Berlin” vs. “Ich weiß, wo Berlin liegt”. wann vs. wenn vs. als: wann is a question word (when?), wenn is a conjunction for conditions or repeated time, als for single past time. nach, zu, in for direction: zu is used for going to a person/profession (zum Arzt), nach for cities/countries without article (nach Deutschland), in + accusative for places with article (ins Kino). machen vs. tun: machen is more common for making/doing concrete things, tun often abstract; misuse of tun as an all-purpose verb is considered colloquial and can sound unnatural in writing.

有些词汇组合甚至让高分考生混淆。kennen 与 wissen:kennen 指通过熟悉而认识人/地方/事物,wissen 指知道事实。”Ich kenne Berlin” 与 “Ich weiß, wo Berlin liegt”。wann、wenn 和 als:wann 是疑问词(何时?),wenn 是表示条件或重复时间的连词,als 用于过去单次时间。nach、zu、in 表示方向:zu 用于去某人/职业地点(zum Arzt),nach 用于不带冠词的城市/国家(nach Deutschland),in + 宾格用于带冠词的地点(ins Kino)。machen 与 tun:machen 更常用于做具体事情,tun 偏抽象;将 tun 用作万能动词属口语化用法,在写作中可能听起来不自然。

8. Listening and Reading Traps | 听力与阅读中的陷阱

The listening paper often includes distractors around numbers, times, prices and negation. For example, a speaker might say “Es kostet nicht 15 Euro, sondern 50 Euro” — trapping anyone who notes down the first number. Negative words like nie, kaum, noch nicht, kein… mehr are commonly ignored. In the reading paper, multiple-choice questions often rely on paraphrasing: the correct answer rephrases an idea instead of repeating exact words from the text. Synonyms and antonyms are tested heavily. A further trap is the “True/False/Not Mentioned” exercise: if the text does not supply the information, the answer is Not Mentioned, even if it seems logical. Train yourself to verify strictly against the text.

9. Writing and Speaking Accuracy | 写作与口语的准确性

In the writing paper, noun capitalisation is a must — forget it and you lose points. Compound nouns must be spelled correctly, as misplacing letters can change meaning (Staubsauger vs. Staubsauger). Commas before subordinate clauses are mandatory. Adjectival endings and case agreement are closely marked. For the speaking exam, pronunciation of umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and the ich-laut (ch in “ich”) versus ach-laut (ch in “Bach”) is frequently assessed. Code-switching to English filler words (“also”, “you know”) must be avoided. Use common discourse markers like außerdem, trotzdem, schließlich to structure your oral responses. Record yourself and check for verb position and adjective endings — these errors are easily fixed before the exam.

在写作卷中,名词必须大写——忘记这一点就会失分。复合词拼写必须正确,字母错置可能改变词义(Staubsauger 吸尘器)。从句前必须使用逗号。形容词词尾和格的一致性会被严格评分。口语考试中,元音变音(ä, ö, ü)以及 ich-Laut(”ich” 中的 ch)与 ach-Laut(”Bach” 中的 ch)的发音常被考查。必须避免用英语填充词(”also”, “you know”)进行语码转换。使用 außerdem, trotzdem, schließlich 等语篇标记来组织口头回答。录下自己的声音,检查动词位置和形容词词尾——这些错误很容易在考前纠正。

10. Exam Question Types and Common Pitfalls | 考试题型与常见陷阱

CIE IGCSE German papers feature matching tasks, form filling, multiple choice, short-answer questions and extended writing. In the matching exercise, students often mismanage time by re-reading the same options repeatedly. In form-filling tasks, misspelling names or numbers, or writing the wrong date format, costs easy marks. In the writing paper, task completion is crucial: if the bullet points ask for your opinion and a reason, both must be present. In listening, failing to read the questions in advance means you may miss key information. A final high-frequency mistake is copying words from the reading text into the answer without adapting the form — e.g., answering a Warum? question with “der Film” instead of “weil der Film spannend ist”. Always check the question word to frame your response correctly.
