1. Percentage Changes and Key Calculations |
Many economic formulas rely on the percentage change between an original value and a new value. The standard expression is: % change = (New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value × 100.
Always identify the original number correctly before applying the formula. A positive result indicates an increase, while a negative result shows a decrease. Economists use this tool for demand, supply, inflation, GDP and many other indicators.
2. Demand and Supply: The Laws |
The Law of Demand states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded falls. This inverse relationship is driven by the income effect and substitution effect.
The Law of Supply states that, ceteris paribus, as the price of a good rises, the quantity supplied increases. Producers are willing to offer more when the price is higher because profitability improves.
Demand curve: P ↑ → Qd ↓ | Supply curve: P ↑ → Qs ↑
3. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |
Price Elasticity of Demand measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price. The core formula is:
PED = %Δ Quantity Demanded ÷ %Δ Price
If PED > 1, demand is price elastic: a small price change causes a proportionally larger change in quantity demanded. If PED < 1, demand is price inelastic. If PED = 1, it is unit elastic. PED = ∞ signals perfectly elastic demand; PED = 0 signals perfectly inelastic demand.
| PED Value | Classification | 分类 | Effect on Total Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| > 1 | Elastic | 富有弹性 | Price cut raises TR; price rise lowers TR |
| < 1 | Inelastic | 缺乏弹性 | Price cut lowers TR; price rise raises TR |
| = 1 | Unit elastic | 单位弹性 | TR unchanged when price changes |
PED is always expressed as a positive number although the underlying ratio is negative due to the law of demand. Edexcel uses the absolute value in most questions.
4. Income Elasticity of Demand (YED) |
Income Elasticity of Demand measures how quantity demanded responds to a change in consumers’ income. The formula is:
YED = %Δ Quantity Demanded ÷ %Δ Income
A positive YED identifies a normal good. If YED > 1, the good is a luxury (income-elastic). A negative YED identifies an inferior good, where demand falls as income rises. YED between 0 and 1 indicates a necessity.
| YED Value | Good Type | 商品类型 | Example |
|---|---|---|
| > 1 | Luxury | 奢侈品 | Overseas holidays, designer clothes |
| 0 – 1 | Necessity | 必需品 | Basic food, toothpaste |
| < 0 | Inferior good | 低档品 | Generic bread, second-hand clothes |
5. Price Elasticity of Supply (PES) |
Price Elasticity of Supply measures how responsive quantity supplied is to a price change. The formula is:
PES = %Δ Quantity Supplied ÷ %Δ Price
PES is always positive because of the law of supply. PES > 1 indicates elastic supply; PES < 1 indicates inelastic supply. Key determinants include time period, spare production capacity, availability of raw materials and ease of storage.
6. Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Inflation |
A price index tracks the cost of a fixed basket of goods over time. The base year is always given an index number of 100. The formula for the index is:
Price Index = (Cost of Basket in Current Year ÷ Cost of Basket in Base Year) × 100
Inflation rate is then calculated as the percentage change in a price index (usually CPI) between two periods:
Inflation Rate = [(Current Year Index − Previous Year Index) ÷ Previous Year Index] × 100
Low and stable inflation is one of the government’s key macroeconomic objectives in the UK, often targeted at 2% by the Bank of England.
7. Unemployment Rate | 失业率
The unemployment rate expresses the unemployed as a percentage of the labour force. Two important definitions from the UK’s Office for National Statistics are used: the Claimant Count and the Labour Force Survey (ILO measure).
Unemployment Rate = (Number of Unemployed ÷ Labour Force) × 100
The labour force includes all people who are either employed or actively seeking work. Students, retirees and those not seeking work are not counted in the labour force. Governments aim for low unemployment, often referred to as full employment, where anyone willing and able to work can find a job.
8. Economic Growth and GDP |
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of all goods and services produced in an economy over a period. Economic growth is typically measured by the percentage change in real GDP.
Real GDP Growth = [(Real GDP Year 2 − Real GDP Year 1) ÷ Real GDP Year 1] × 100
Real GDP strips out the effect of inflation so that we measure changes in output rather than prices. Another useful tool is GDP per capita:
GDP per Capita = Real GDP ÷ Population
This gives a rough guide to living standards, although it does not account for income distribution or well-being.
9. Business Costs, Revenue and Profit |
Total revenue (TR) is the income a firm receives from selling its output. Total cost (TC) is the sum of all production expenses. Profit is the key incentive for entrepreneurs.
Total Revenue = Price × Quantity Sold
Total Cost = Total Fixed Cost + Total Variable Cost
Profit = Total Revenue − Total Cost
Average cost (unit cost) is calculated as Total Cost ÷ Output. A firm makes a profit when price exceeds average cost; it breaks even when price equals average cost.
10. Productivity | 生产率
Productivity measures how efficiently inputs are turned into outputs. Labour productivity is the most common measure at GCSE.
Labour Productivity = Total Output ÷ Number of Workers
Higher productivity can lower average costs, increase wages and improve international competitiveness. Investment in technology, training and better management are ways to raise productivity.
11. Tax Revenue and Government Budget |
Governments collect tax revenue to fund public services. The total revenue from a specific tax can be estimated by multiplying the tax per unit by the quantity sold.
Tax Revenue = Tax per Unit × Quantity Sold
A government budget balance compares revenue with spending. A budget surplus occurs when revenue > spending; a deficit when spending > revenue. The formula for the budget position is:
Budget Balance = Total Government Revenue − Total Government Spending
12. Exchange Rates and Currency Conversion |
An exchange rate is the price of one currency expressed in terms of another. For example, if GBP/USD = 1.25, one pound buys 1.25 US dollars. Converting between currencies uses two straightforward rules:
To convert from home currency to foreign currency, multiply by the exchange rate: Amount in USD = Amount in GBP × Exchange Rate (GBP/USD).
To convert back from foreign currency to home currency, divide by the exchange rate: Amount in GBP = Amount in USD ÷ Exchange Rate.
A weaker pound means exports become cheaper and imports become dearer; a stronger pound has the opposite effect.
