1. Atomic Structure & Subatomic Particles |
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can take part in chemical reactions. It consists of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells.
A proton has a relative mass of 1 and a charge of +1. A neutron has a mass of 1 and no charge. An electron has a negligible mass (1/1836) and a charge of –1.
The atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in the nucleus, which defines the element. The mass number (A) is the total number of protons and neutrons.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. They have identical chemical properties but different physical properties.
The relative atomic mass (Aᵣ) is the average mass of an atom of an element compared to 1/12th the mass of a carbon-12 atom, taking into account the relative abundances of isotopes.
An ion is a charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses electrons. A cation is a positively charged ion (lost electrons), while an anion is negatively charged (gained electrons).
Electrons occupy specific energy levels (shells). The first shell holds up to 2 electrons, the second and third shells hold up to 8 each (for the first 20 elements). Electronic configuration is written, e.g., 2.8.1 for sodium.
2. The Periodic Table & Trends |
The periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same group (vertical column) have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of outer-shell electrons.
Group 1 elements are the alkali metals. They are soft, highly reactive metals that react vigorously with water to form alkaline solutions and hydrogen gas. Reactivity increases down the group.
Group 7 elements are the halogens. They exist as diatomic molecules (F₂, Cl₂, Br₂, I₂) and become darker and less reactive down the group. A more reactive halogen can displace a less reactive one from its salt solution.
Group 0 (or 8) are the noble gases. They are monatomic, colourless, and very unreactive because they have a full outer shell of electrons (stable octet).
Transition metals (between Groups 2 and 3) are typical metals: hard, strong, high melting points, can form coloured compounds, and act as good catalysts.
Mnemonic for diatomic molecules: ‘Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer’ – H₂, N₂, F₂, O₂, I₂, Cl₂, Br₂.
Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer,代表H₂, N₂, F₂, O₂, I₂, Cl₂, Br₂。
