📚 Year 11 Eduqas Geography: Exam Techniques and Marking Criteria | Eduqas 地理 Year 11:答题技巧与评分标准

Mastering exam technique is just as important as knowing the content in Eduqas GCSE Geography. The mark schemes reward precise, well-structured answers that show not only knowledge but also application, analysis and the ability to handle geographical data. Understanding exactly what examiners are looking for can add several marks to your score without learning any new facts. This guide breaks down every question type you will face across Component 1, Component 2 and Component 3, explains the marking criteria and gives you clear strategies to turn your knowledge into top-band answers.

All Eduqas GCSE Geography questions are marked against four Assessment Objectives. AO1 tests your knowledge of places, processes and concepts. AO2 assesses how well you apply that knowledge in different contexts. AO3 is about analysing and evaluating geographical information and issues. AO4 covers your ability to select, use and interpret a range of geographical skills, including maps, graphs and photographs. Across the three papers, roughly 20–25% of marks are for AO1, 25–30% for AO2, 25–30% for AO3 and 20–25% for AO4. Every answer you write must target the right AO, because a case-study question demanding AO2 and AO3 will not reward simple factual recall alone.

For 1–2 mark questions, AO1 and AO4 dominate. Explain questions (3–6 marks) mix AO1 with AO2. 8-mark case study and evaluate questions heavily weigh AO2 and AO3, plus AO4 if data is provided. Before you write, identify which AO the question is targeting. If the stem says ‘Assess the extent to which…’ or ‘Evaluate…’, you know AO3 is central and you must produce a balanced argument with a justified conclusion. If it says ‘Describe the pattern shown in Figure 2’, you are mainly using AO4 skills — so your answer must quote data precisely, not drift into explanation.

2. Command Words and What They Require |

Command words in Eduqas questions tell you exactly what to do. ‘Identify’ or ‘State’ means give a brief, straightforward piece of information. ‘Describe’ requires you to say what something is like, with detail if marks allow — for a graph, quote figures; for a landform, mention shape, size and location. ‘Explain’ demands reasons and causal links: you must show how or why something happens. ‘Suggest’ is used when there may be more than one valid answer; you must apply geographical understanding to offer a plausible reason. ‘Assess’, ‘Evaluate’ or ‘Discuss’ are high-tariff commands: they expect a balanced analysis of evidence for and against an issue, ending with a supported judgement.

‘To what extent…’ questions are a common form of evaluation. You should present arguments that agree and disagree, and then decide the degree to which the statement is true. Never just give a one-sided answer. For ‘Justify’ questions, you need to give reasons for a decision or choice, often drawing on case-study evidence. Practise highlighting the command word in every question during revision so you never misread what is being asked.

“To what extent……”

3. Structuring Short-Answer Questions (1–2 marks) |

These questions are marked using a point-based system. For 1 mark, a single correct fact is enough. Write it in a complete sentence, but do not add unnecessary explanation — extra words do not gain credit and can waste time. For 2 marks, you usually need either two distinct points or one point with development. For example, ‘Identify two reasons for urbanisation in LICs’ could be answered with ‘Rural push factors such as lack of jobs’ and ‘Urban pull factors like better healthcare.’ Keep answers concise and avoid writing two sentences that repeat the same idea.

Where a map, photo or graph is provided, the 1–2 mark question often tests AO4. You might be asked to ‘Measure the distance along the footpath’ or ‘State the height of the contour at X’. Always use the units given on the map or graph. If you are asked to give a grid reference, remember to read ‘along the corridor and up the stairs’ — eastings first, then northings. A common mistake is reversing the numbers, which instantly loses the mark even if you identified the correct location.

4. Developing Point-Mark Questions (3–4 marks) |

At 3–4 marks, examiners are looking for a logical chain of reasoning, often under the command word ‘Explain’. A 3-mark explain question might expect one well-developed point showing cause and consequence, or two simpler points each with a little development. A 4-mark question usually rewards two developed points. Structure your answer by stating the reason and then adding ‘this means that…’ or ‘therefore…’. For example, ‘One reason for coastal erosion is the fetch distance (1). This means waves have more time to gain energy (2), so they erode cliffs more quickly (3).’ Sprinkle geographical keywords (e.g., hydraulic action, abrasion) into the chain to demonstrate knowledge.

For ‘Suggest’ questions worth 3–4 marks, you may not need a definite cause, but your idea must be plausible and backed by logic. If the question shows a photo of a river valley and asks ‘Suggest reasons for the flood risk’, link physical (steep slopes, impermeable rock) and human factors (deforestation, buildings) using clear connectors. Never write a bullet list without explanation — Eduqas expects full sentences that show how one factor leads to the outcome.

5. Tackling 6-Mark Explain Questions |

Six-mark questions are a step up, requiring more depth and often a combination of AO1 and AO2. A typical command is ‘Explain the formation of…’ or ‘Explain the effects of…’. For a physical geography topic like waterfall formation, you need to sequence the steps: differential erosion of hard and soft rock, undercutting, plunge pool creation, retreat. Use labelled diagrams if the question allows (check the instruction — ‘you may use a diagram’ means you should, as it can help you explain and earn marks). Even without a diagram, describe the process as if you were narrating a story, with one stage leading clearly to the next.

When explaining effects, such as the impacts of a volcanic eruption, categorise them to show high-level thinking. Separate social, economic and environmental effects, and consider short-term versus long-term. Use connectives like ‘as a result’, ‘this leads to’, ‘consequently’ to build your chain. For 6 marks, two well-developed chains of explanation, each containing several steps, are usually sufficient. However, three more concise chains can also work if they are fully explained. Always link back to the specific context in the question — a generic answer about volcanoes will not reach the top band if the resource booklet mentions a particular eruption.

使用“as a result”“this leads to”“consequently”等连接词来构建推理链。

6. Mastering 8-Mark Case Study Questions |

Eduqas includes case study questions across Component 1 and Component 2. These 8-mark gems test AO2 and AO3 heavily. The examiner expects you to name a specific place and provide detailed, accurate information. Start by stating the name and location of your case study clearly. Then use the PEEL structure loosely: Point, Evidence (specific data or facts from the case study), Explanation (how this illustrates the geographical concept) and Link back to the question. For 8 marks, three well-developed paragraphs with precise evidence are a solid approach.

Specificity is everything. Do not just write ‘deforestation in Brazil’ — name the Rondonia region, quote hectares lost, mention the Trans-Amazonian Highway, and link to economic pressures and environmental consequences. Marks are allocated to the quality of your place-specific detail. For human geography case studies, include statistics on population, employment percentages, tourism numbers or cost-benefit figures. For physical landscapes, memorise measurements: the height of a lake, the rate of erosion, the date of the event. A named place with numbers will always outscore a vague statement.

7. Approaching 8-Mark ‘Discuss’ or ‘Evaluate’ Questions |

These questions expect a balanced argument. You must present arguments for and against the statement, and then make a judgement. A clear opening sentence that acknowledges both sides sets a good tone. For example, ‘There are arguments both supporting and challenging the view that hard engineering is the best way to manage coastal flooding.’ Then dedicate one paragraph to arguments ‘for’, one to arguments ‘against’, and a third paragraph to your judgement, weighing which factors are more significant in the context provided. Without a judgement, answers are capped at the mid-level band.

Support your arguments with case study evidence whenever possible. If evaluating whether tourism brings more benefits than problems to an LIC, refer to a specific country you have studied. Use data on jobs created and environmental damage. Your conclusion should decide ‘to what extent’ the statement is true, using phrases like ‘Overall, the benefits outweigh the costs because…’ or ‘In the short term the view holds true, but in the long term…’. Avoid fence-sitting; you must take a clear, justified stance. Eduqas mark schemes for 8-mark questions require a ‘reasonable and substantiated judgement’ for the top band.

8. Spatial and Data Response Questions (OS Map, Graphs) | 空间与数据响应题(OS 地图、图表)

Data response questions appear in every Eduqas paper, often attached to Ordnance Survey (OS) maps, graphs, photographs or GIS images. The key skill is to describe patterns accurately and then offer geographical reasons. When describing a graph, always quote values: ‘The maximum temperature was 24°C in July, while rainfall peaked at 120 mm in November.’ Identify overall trends, anomalies and the relationship between variables. If two graphs are presented, compare them explicitly using phrases like ‘by contrast’ or ‘similarly’. For maps, use compass directions, scale and grid references to locate features precisely.

OS map questions (1:25 000 or 1:50 000) test your ability to read symbols, relief and site factors. Practice the six-figure grid reference until it becomes automatic. When asked to ‘describe the site of the settlement’, mention its position relative to rivers, contours, woodland and transport links. Use map evidence phrases: ‘The settlement is located on a gentle slope (evidenced by widely spaced contours), at a bridging point on the River X.’ This shows the examiner you are interpreting the map, not just guessing. For photo questions, link what you see to geographical processes — a photo of a spit should trigger terms like longshore drift, deposition and prevailing wind.

9. Fieldwork Enquiry Questions (Component 3) – Applying the Enquiry Cycle |

Component 3 is the fieldwork enquiry paper, and it always asks you to reflect on your own fieldwork. The specification expects you to know the full enquiry cycle: setting a suitable question, choosing data collection methods, presenting data, analysing results, drawing conclusions and evaluating the enquiry. Questions may ask you to justify why you chose a particular sampling strategy (e.g., stratified sampling to ensure representation) or to describe how you minimised risk.

When describing data presentation techniques, explain why you used them. For example, ‘I used a scatter graph because it allowed me to see if there was a relationship between river velocity and distance downstream.’ For 6-mark evaluate questions on fieldwork, identify specific strengths and weaknesses of your data collection, and suggest improvements that would increase reliability. Never say ‘there were no problems’ — a good evaluation acknowledges limitations, such as the sampling being done on only one day, which may not represent typical conditions.

10. Time Management and Paper Strategy |

Eduqas papers have tight time limits. Component 1 is 1 hour 30 minutes for 74 marks, giving just over 1.2 minutes per mark. Component 2 is also 1 hour 30 minutes. Component 3 is 1 hour 15 minutes for 55 marks. A practical rule is to spend roughly 1 minute per mark, but with a slight time advantage for 8-mark questions, which you should plan briefly. Always start by scanning the whole paper during the reading time, noting the resources and question choices (if any). Answer the questions you feel most confident about first to build momentum, but be careful to number them correctly.
