Welcome to your Year 11 SQA Physical Education journey. This summer bridging course is designed to give you a head start by introducing key concepts, terminology, and analysis skills used in National 5 and Higher PE. Whether you are moving from the Broad General Education into National 5 or stepping up to Higher, this guide will help you build confidence and deepen your understanding of the factors that impact performance.

1. Understanding the SQA PE Course Structure | 了解SQA体育课程结构

SQA Physical Education at National 5 and Higher level combines practical performance with theoretical knowledge. You will be assessed through a portfolio and a practical performance in two activities. The portfolio requires you to analyse your performance, develop a personal development plan, and evaluate your progress. Understanding this structure early will help you gather the right data and insights throughout the year.

The key components are: (1) a ‘Performance’ section where you are graded on your practical ability, and (2) a ‘Factors Impacting Performance’ (FIP) project where you select one factor (mental, physical, social, or skill-related) to investigate and improve. This bridging course will focus on building the vocabulary and analytical tools you need for the FIP project.

2. Factors Impacting Performance (FIP) |

In SQA PE, ‘Factors Impacting Performance’ are split into four main categories: Mental, Physical, Social, and Skill-related (sometimes called the four factors). A performer’s success depends on the interaction of these elements. For example, in basketball, physical fatigue can reduce concentration (mental) and affect teamwork (social), which then lowers shooting accuracy (skill).

You will be expected to explain, analyse, and evaluate how one chosen factor influences your performance. Start by keeping a training diary to note any feelings of anxiety, patterns in your fitness, or how you communicate with teammates. This raw data will be invaluable for your portfolio.

3. Methods of Data Collection |

Accurate data collection is the foundation of any effective analysis. SQA PE emphasises using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data includes heart rate readings, bleep test scores, or the number of successful passes; qualitative data comes from video observations, coach feedback, and personal reflection sheets.

To prepare, practice collecting data during a familiar activity. Use a simple table to record your resting heart rate, the type of skill you attempt, and your own rating of how confident you felt. You can later link this to the emotional and mental factors.

  • Heart rate monitor or manual pulse check (count for 15 seconds × 4)
  • Observation schedule with tick boxes for successful outcomes
  • Likert scale questionnaires (1–5) for motivation or confidence

4. Analysing Performance: Observation & Analysis |

Observation is not just watching; it is purposefully looking for patterns. You will use models such as the ‘Information Processing Model’ or ‘Cycle of Analysis’ to break down your performance. The Cycle of Analysis involves four stages: Investigate, Analyse, Develop, and Review. In the Investigate phase, you gather data; in Analyse, you identify strengths and weaknesses.

As a summer task, film yourself performing a simple skill, such as a badminton serve or a football shot. Watch the recording and write down exactly what you see: body position, timing, and outcome. Avoid general comments like ‘it was good’ and be specific, e.g., ‘the toss was too low, causing a rushed swing’.

5. Physical Fitness: Components & Training |

Physical fitness is divided into health-related components (cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength, flexibility, speed) and skill-related components (agility, balance, coordination, reaction time, power). For your FIP project, you might focus on one component and apply the principles of training: Specificity, Progressive Overload, Reversibility, and Tedium.

To calculate a target heart rate zone for cardio training, you can use the Karvonen formula:

Target HR = ((HRmax − HRrest) × % intensity) + HRrest

Common training methods include continuous training (long, steady, low-moderate intensity), interval training (periods of work and rest), fartlek training (speed play), and circuit training. The table below summarises their main features and which fitness components they develop.

Training Method Primary Fitness Component Work:Rest Ratio
Continuous Cardio-respiratory Endurance No rest (steady pace)
Interval Speed / Anaerobic Endurance e.g., 1:3 (work:rest)
Fartlek Aerobic & Anaerobic Endurance Variable intensity, self-paced rest
Circuit Muscular Endurance / Strength Short rest between stations

6. Skill Development & Learning |

Skill acquisition involves moving through three learning stages: Cognitive, Associative, and Autonomous. In the cognitive stage, you understand the basic movement pattern, making many errors. In the associative stage, you refine the skill with practice and feedback. In the autonomous stage, the skill becomes automatic, requiring little conscious thought.

Different practice methods can be used: whole-part-whole, progressive part, and massed vs distributed practice. While preparing for your summer work, apply whole-part-whole to a swimming stroke: swim the whole stroke, then practice the arm action alone, then integrate it back. Record the number of successful attempts to track learning.

7. Mental Factors: Motivation & Anxiety |

Mental factors deeply affect performance. Intrinsic motivation comes from internal satisfaction, while extrinsic motivation comes from external rewards. Anxiety can be somatic (physical symptoms like increased heart rate) or cognitive (worry, negative thoughts). These can be managed through techniques such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, imagery, and progressive muscle relaxation.

For your summer journal, rate your motivation and anxiety before/after practice on a scale of 1 to 10. Note any triggers. This will help you identify patterns and select appropriate mental strategies when the course formally begins.

8. Social Factors & Team Dynamics |

Social factors refer to how you interact with others. Effective communication, cooperation, and leadership can enhance team cohesion. Conversely, poor communication or a lack of trust can cause breakdowns in play. The Ringelmann Effect, where individual effort decreases as group size increases, is an important concept to understand in team sports.

Observe a team sport event (live or recorded) and note the frequency of supportive communication (‘well done’, clapping) versus instructional communication (‘man on’, ‘switch’). Relate this to the team’s performance during that period. You can use this qualitative evidence in your project.

9. Goal Setting & Personal Development Plan |

SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) are essential for driving improvement. For your portfolio, you will set a long-term goal aligned with your chosen factor, and then break it down into short-term goals. For example, to improve cardio-respiratory endurance, a SMART goal could be: ‘Increase my bleep test score from 7.2 to 8.5 within 6 weeks by completing 3 interval training sessions per week.’

This summer, choose one fitness component or skill you want to improve. Write a SMART goal and design a simple 4-week plan. Even if you do not follow it perfectly, thinking through the process will prepare you for the formal planning stage.
