1. Tempo Markings | 速度标记

Tempo is the speed of the underlying beat. Most common terms are in Italian and are often abbreviated.

Largo – Very slow, broad and stately, around 40–60 BPM (beats per minute).

Dynamics describe the volume of the music, ranging from very soft to very loud. Changes in volume are just as examinable as static levels.

Pianissimo (pp) – Very soft.

Articulation tells the performer how to attack and connect notes. Ornaments are melodic decorations that add expressive detail.

Staccato – Short, detached notes, indicated by a dot above or below the note head.

Accent (>) – An emphasised attack on a note.

Melodic terms describe how a tune moves, its shape, and the raw material used. Recognising these features helps you comment on the character of a piece.

Conjunct – Melody that moves by step (adjacent notes of the scale).

Harmony and tonality shape the emotional colour of a piece. You must be able to identify whether the music is in a major or minor key, and recognise standard chord progressions and cadences.

Tonality – The overall key centre: major, minor, modal, atonal.

Atonal – Music without a clear key centre, often from the 20th century.

Binary form (AB) – Two distinct sections, often each repeated.
