1. What is a Case Study in Philosophy? |

In philosophy, a case study is a carefully constructed scenario designed to provoke reflection on fundamental questions. It might be a real-life event, a thought experiment, or a short narrative. Your task is not simply to summarise the story but to extract the conceptual puzzle it presents. For instance, a case about a lying friend is not about the friend; it is about the nature of morality and whether lying can ever be justified. You must identify the philosophical issue, map out any arguments embedded in the scene, and then evaluate those arguments using reasoning, moral theories, or epistemological concepts.

2. Step-by-Step Guide to Analysing a Case |

A reliable routine turns an intimidating case into manageable parts. Follow these four stages every time you practise.

  • Stage 1 – Identify: Look for the central philosophical question. Is it about right and wrong, knowledge and doubt, or the meaning of life? Underline key dilemmas.
  • Stage 2 – Reconstruct: List the reasons people in the case give for their actions. Turn those reasons into a clear argument with premises and a conclusion. Use an ‘if … then …’ format to reveal the logic.
  • Stage 3 – Evaluate: Test each premise. Is it factually true? Is it supported by ethical theories such as Utilitarianism or Kantian ethics? Are there hidden assumptions, like ‘nature always tells us what is right’?
  • Stage 4 – Respond: Weigh counterarguments. Can a different philosophical perspective weaken the original argument? Always finish by stating your own justified position, even if it is tentative.

3. Case 1: The Trolley Problem – Moral Philosophy |

A runaway trolley is heading towards five people who will be killed if nothing is done. You can pull a lever to divert the trolley onto a side track, where one person is standing and would be killed instead. Is it morally permissible to pull the lever? (Philippa Foot, 1967)

Identifying the issue: The case asks whether an action that deliberately brings about one death to save five lives is morally acceptable. The underlying philosophical tension lies between consequentialist and deontological ethics.

Reconstructing arguments:
Argument A (Utilitarian): P1: An action is right if it maximises overall happiness. P2: Saving five lives produces more happiness than saving one. C: Therefore, pulling the lever is right.

Argument B (Kantian): P1: One must never use a person merely as a means. P2: Pulling the lever uses the one person as a means to save five. C: Therefore, pulling the lever is morally wrong.

Evaluation: You should test the premises. For Argument A, can we really measure happiness across five versus one life? Does the calculation ignore the rights of the individual? For Argument B, does the ‘using as a means’ premise fail if the one person would not have died otherwise? Consider the Doctrine of Double Effect, which distinguishes between intending harm and foreseeing harm.

Use a table to compare the two frameworks clearly.

Criterion Utilitarianism Kantian Ethics
Focus Consequences / happiness Duty / respect for persons
Rule for the lever Pull, because 5 > 1 lives saved Do not pull, because it uses a person as means
Key criticism Ignores individual rights and justice Can be too rigid in catastrophe cases

4. Case 2: The Brain in a Vat – Epistemology |

Imagine that while you sleep, an evil scientist removes your brain and places it in a vat of nutrients. The scientist connects your brain to a supercomputer that feeds you exactly the same sensory experiences you are having now. You think you are reading this text, but in reality you are just a brain in a vat. How do you know you are not a brain in a vat? (Adapted from Hilary Putnam)

Identifying the issue: This case challenges our ordinary claims to knowledge. If we cannot rule out the brain-in-a-vat scenario, then perhaps we do not know anything about the external world. This is a radical sceptical challenge.

Reconstructing the sceptical argument:
P1: If I know I have hands, then I know I am not a brain in a vat.
P2: I do not know I am not a brain in a vat.
C: Therefore, I do not know I have hands.

Evaluation: Several responses exist. The relevant alternatives theory states that a possibility only undermines knowledge if it is a relevant alternative in the context. In ordinary life, the brain-in-a-vat scenario is not relevant, so my claim ‘I have hands’ still counts as knowledge. Another reply is that the sceptic sets the bar unreasonably high; knowledge does not require absolute certainty. You might also introduce reliabilism: my sense perception reliably indicates hands, so I know.

When writing your answer, show how the sceptical argument is valid but you can reject premise 2 or weaken the concept of knowledge it assumes.

5. Identifying Fallacies in Arguments |

Philosophy demands clear reasoning. Often an argument in a case study may sound persuasive because it contains a fallacy. You need to spot these errors and explain why they weaken the reasoning.

Consider this scenario: ‘The head teacher says we must not study philosophy because only confused people waste time on such questions. She is wrong because she has never read any philosophy herself.’ Which fallacy is at play? It is a version of ad hominem—dismissing an argument by attacking the person, not the content. The fact that the head teacher has not read philosophy does not automatically make her claim false.

Common fallacies you should practise recognising include:

  • Straw man: Misrepresenting an opponent’s position to make it easier to refute. ‘Utilitarians just want to use people as calculators.’
  • False dilemma: Presenting only two options when more exist. ‘Either we pull the lever or we are murderers.’
  • Begging the question: The conclusion is assumed in a premise. ‘Lying is always wrong because lies are immoral.’

Always name the fallacy and explain how it fails to support the conclusion.

6. Using Thought Experiments Effectively |

Philosophers often create imaginary scenarios to test principles. Knowing how to handle a thought experiment in an exam will set your answer apart. When you meet one, ask three questions: (a) What intuition does the scenario aim to provoke? (b) Is the analogy between the scenario and reality strong enough? (c) Could the same intuition be explained by a different principle?

Take Judith Jarvis Thomson’s famous violinist. You wake up to find yourself plugged into a famous violinist who needs your kidneys for nine months to survive. Is it morally obligatory to stay plugged in? The scenario tests the claim that a right to life always outweighs bodily autonomy. You should note how the analogy is limited: pregnancy is not like being kidnapped, and the relationship to a fetus is different from a stranger. Yet the thought experiment helps clarify where we draw the line between compassion and personal rights.

Your answer should do more than describe the scenario—it should expose the underlying principle and assess the analogy’s strength.

7. Structuring Your Exam Answer |

A clear structure makes your analysis convincing. A widely recommended model is PEEL-X, which stands for Point, Evidence/Example, Explain, Link, and a critical eXtra step for philosophy.

  • Point: State your claim directly. ‘The trolley dilemma reveals a conflict between utilitarianism and deontological ethics.’
  • Evidence/Example: Refer to the case detail. ‘In the lever scenario, saving five lives at the cost of one is a utilitarian calculus.’
  • Explain: Analyse why this matters. ‘This matters because it forces us to ask whether numbers alone determine moral rightness.’
  • Link: Connect back to the question or to a broader theme. ‘Thus, the problem challenges the assumption that morality is merely about outcomes.’
  • eXtra – Counterargument and response: ‘However, a Kantian would argue that the act itself is wrong regardless of outcomes. I find this insufficient because it ignores the moral significance of preventing a greater tragedy.’

By using this pattern, you ensure your answer shows depth and balance, which examiners reward.

8. Practice Drill with a New Case: The Ring of Gyges |

Read the case from Plato’s Republic: Gyges, a shepherd, finds a ring that makes him invisible. Using this power, he seduces the queen, kills the king, and seizes the throne. Glaucon argues that anyone who could act unjustly without being caught would do so, and therefore justice is only a compromise we obey out of fear of punishment. Is he right?

Now, apply the four-stage analysis on your own, then compare with this model response.

Identify: The philosophical issue is the nature of justice—whether it is intrinsically valuable or merely an instrumental good to avoid harm. The central question: Would a truly just person resist the ring?

Reconstruct: Glaucon’s argument: P1: Humans are naturally self-interested. P2: If there were no consequences, self-interest would lead us to act unjustly. C: Therefore, justice is only practised for fear of external punishment, not for its own sake.

Evaluate: You could challenge premise 1 by citing moral exemplars who behave justly even in private. Additionally, Plato’s response is that a just soul is more harmonious and genuinely happier. Even if invisible, the unjust person would damage their own psychic health. The ring merely reveals our true character, it does not determine it.

Respond: While Glaucon powerfully describes how many people would behave, he fails to prove that everyone would. The ring of Gyges thus becomes a test of moral integrity, not proof that justice is empty. My own view is that a society built only on fear of punishment would be fragile, and that genuine justice has an internal reward.

Practising with such cases builds the ability to think like a philosopher—moving beyond description to critical evaluation.
