1. Colour Wheel Mixing Formulas |
The pigment colour wheel follows simple additive and subtractive ‘recipes’. The primary triad—red, yellow and blue—cannot be created by mixing other colours. The secondary colours are obtained by mixing equal parts of two primaries: Red + Yellow → Orange, Yellow + Blue → Green, Blue + Red → Violet. Tertiary colours add another layer: Red + Orange → Red-Orange, Yellow + Orange → Yellow-Orange, and so on around the wheel. Treat these as foundational formulas for any painting or colour study.
2. Complementary Contrast Equation |
Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel: Red ↔ Green, Blue ↔ Orange, Yellow ↔ Violet. When placed side by side, they follow the law of simultaneous contrast: each complement intensifies the other, making both appear more vibrant. If mixed together, they neutralise each other, producing browns, greys and muted tones. In composition, use small amounts of a complement to make a dominant hue sing; this is the formula for visual vibration.
3. Split-Complementary Harmony Formula |
The split-complementary scheme softens the high tension of pure complementary contrast. Choose a base hue, identify its direct complement, then take the two colours immediately adjacent to that complement. For example, with Red as the base, the complement is Green; split complements are Blue-Green and Yellow-Green. The formula gives a strong visual interest while maintaining harmony: Base + Split-Left + Split-Right. This is especially useful for creating balanced yet dynamic colour palettes in paintings, fashion and graphic design.
4. Rule of Thirds Composition Theorem |
Divide the picture plane into nine equal rectangles using two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. The rule states that the most visually engaging points are the four intersections where these lines cross. Place the focal point, horizon line or key vertical elements along these lines or at the intersections. Mathematically, this avoids the static effect of centring the subject and produces a more dynamic, naturally balanced composition.
5. Golden Ratio (Divine Proportion) Formula |
Approximately 1:1.618, the golden ratio φ (phi) has been used since antiquity to achieve aesthetically pleasing proportions. In a golden rectangle, the ratio of the longer side to the shorter side is φ. Artworks often position the most important area using a golden spiral, which can be constructed from quarter-circles inside golden rectangles. The formula: total length ÷ 1.618 ≈ shorter segment. Apply this to canvas dimensions, the placement of horizon lines and even facial proportions for a classical sense of beauty.
6. Linear Perspective Equations |
Linear perspective is governed by strict geometric relationships. All receding parallel lines (orthogonals) converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon line. The apparent size of an object diminishes in direct proportion to its distance from the viewer: if an object is moved twice as far away, its height appears half as large. This can be expressed as Apparent Size ≈ Actual Size ÷ Distance. In two-point perspective, vertical lines remain vertical while horizontal lines converge to two separate vanishing points. Master these equations and any architectural or interior scene can be constructed systematically.
7. Atmospheric Perspective Formula |
Unlike linear perspective, atmospheric perspective uses colour and tone to convey depth. The formula has three parts: 1) Contrast decreases with distance—distant elements have a narrower tonal range. 2) Colour saturation drops—far-off hills appear more grey-blue than green. 3) Warm colours advance and cool colours recede—red objects feel closer, blue objects feel farther away. Apply this formula: Distance → Lower Contrast + Desaturated Blues + Cooler Hues. It is essential for landscape painting and any large-scale work.
8. Value Structure Formula (Chiaroscuro) |
Strong three-dimensional illusion relies on five consistently organised value zones: Highlight, Light, Shadow, Core Shadow and Reflected Light. The formula reads: Light source → Highlight → Light → Core Shadow (deepest dark on the form) → Reflected Light (bounce light from surroundings) → Cast Shadow. The transition between light and shadow is called the terminator. By systematically applying these five values, an object can be modelled with convincing depth and volume, whether in pencil, charcoal or paint.
9. Human Proportion Canon (Head Count) |
The idealised standing adult figure is often measured in head lengths. A common canon uses 7½ to 8 heads total: 1 head for the head itself, from chin to chest approximately 1 head, chin to navel 2 heads, navel to pubis 1 head, pubis to knee 2 heads, knee to heel 2 heads. The midpoint of the figure falls at the pubic bone. Arms follow the ratio: shoulder to elbow ≈ 1½ heads, elbow to wrist ≈ 1¼ heads. This proportional formula can be adapted for children, heroic figures or stylised illustration once the basic canon is memorised.
10. Gestalt Grouping Principles |
Gestalt psychology describes how the human brain organises visual elements into unified wholes. The key formulas include: Proximity—elements close together are perceived as a group; Similarity—elements sharing colour, shape or size are grouped; Closure—the mind fills in missing gaps to complete a shape; Continuity—the eye follows a path, line or curve; and Figure-Ground—the separation of subject from background. Apply these formulas to control the viewer’s eye and create strong visual narratives in logos, posters and fine art compositions.
11. Balance and Symmetry Equation |
Visual balance is a sense of distributed weight in a composition. Symmetrical balance (formal) can be described as Image = Mirror Reflection across a vertical axis. Asymmetrical balance (informal) is more complex but can be approximated by a seesaw formula: a small, visually heavy element (dark, textured, detailed) can balance a larger, visually light area (pale, smooth, empty). Radial balance emanates from a central point, as in mandalas. The equation to check: Sum of Visual Weight on Left ≈ Sum of Visual Weight on Right. Always test your composition by flipping it horizontally to reveal imbalance.
12. Grid and Alignment System for Design |
In graphic design and mixed-media work, a grid serves as the invisible skeleton that organises type and image. A typical formula is to divide the page into 12 columns, allowing region width to be 1/12, 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 etc. Align all text boxes, images and graphic elements to these column edges. The rule: Every element must align with something else—never place an element ‘randomly’. Margins and gutters (spaces between columns) should follow a consistent ratio, e.g. gutter = half margin. This formula ensures rhythm, readability and professional polish.
