1. Militarism and Alliances |

Militarism: A policy of building up strong armed forces and a readiness to use them aggressively. The Anglo-German naval race and massive standing armies created a tense atmosphere where war seemed a logical step. Rapid military expansion made governments believe they could achieve quick victories.

Alliance System: A network of mutual defence agreements that divided Europe into two armed camps: the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) and the Triple Entente (France, Russia, Britain). When a local crisis erupted, the alliance commitments transformed it into a continental war.

Triple Entente: The understanding between France, Russia, and Britain. Although not a formal military alliance initially, it signalled a united front against the Central Powers. Its military conventions meant that an attack on one was likely to trigger support from the others.

Memory aid: Use the acronym MAIN — Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism — to recall the four long-term causes of World War I.

2. Imperialism and Nationalism |

Imperialism: The competition among great powers to acquire colonies, markets, and raw materials. Tensions arose from the ‘Scramble for Africa’ and crises over Morocco (1905, 1911), which nearly sparked war between France and Germany. Imperial rivalries heightened mutual suspicion.

Nationalism: A strong sense of pride in one’s nation, often accompanied by a desire for independence or dominance. In the Balkans, Slavic nationalism threatened Austria-Hungary’s stability. French bitterness over the loss of Alsace-Lorraine also fed nationalist feeling.

Pan-Slavism: A movement advocating the unity of all Slavic peoples, backed by Russia. It justified Russian intervention in Balkan affairs and directly clashed with Austro-Hungarian interests, making the Balkans a ‘powder keg’ of Europe.

Remember: Think of the Balkans as a tinderbox, with nationalism the spark and alliances the fuel that spread the fire.

3. The Assassination and July Crisis |

Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (28 June 1914): The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was murdered in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb nationalist belonging to the ‘Black Hand’ group. This event triggered the July Crisis.

Black Hand: A secret Serbian nationalist society committed to uniting all Serbs. It provided weapons and training to the assassins. Its existence was used by Austria-Hungary to justify a harsh ultimatum against Serbia.

Ultimatum: Austria-Hungary’s list of demands to Serbia, deliberately designed to be unacceptable. Serbia accepted most but not all points. Germany’s ‘blank cheque’ of unconditional support encouraged Austria-Hungary to declare war on 28 July.

Schlieffen Plan: Germany’s war plan to defeat France quickly by invading through Belgium, then turn east to face Russia. It brought Britain into the war because of the 1839 Treaty of London guaranteeing Belgian neutrality.

4. The Treaty of Versailles, 1919 |

War Guilt Clause (Article 231): The clause that forced Germany to accept full responsibility for starting the war. It became the legal basis for demanding reparations and humiliated the German nation, fuelling long-term resentment.

Reparations: Germany was ordered to pay £6.6 billion in compensation for wartime damage. This crippled the German economy, contributed to hyperinflation in 1923, and became a rallying point for nationalist opposition.

Demilitarised Rhineland: The German territory west of the Rhine was to be permanently demilitarised, and Allied troops would occupy it for 15 years. This removed a buffer zone for France but left Germany feeling vulnerable and humiliated.

Diktat: Germans called the Treaty a ‘dictated peace’ because they were not allowed to negotiate. This feeling of injustice was exploited by extremist parties, including the Nazis, to attack the Weimar Republic.

5. The Other Peace Treaties and Self-Determination |

Treaty of Saint-Germain (1919): Settled terms with Austria. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was dismantled, and Austria lost significant territories, including South Tyrol and parts of the Balkans. The resulting ‘rump state’ was economically weak and forbidden from uniting with Germany (Anschluss).

Treaty of Trianon (1920): The peace with Hungary that stripped it of two-thirds of its pre-war territory. Millions of ethnic Hungarians were left outside the new borders, causing lasting grievances.

Self-determination: The principle championed by US President Wilson that peoples should be able to govern themselves. New nation-states such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were carved out, but the peacemakers often failed to apply the principle consistently, leaving ethnic minorities inside the new states.

6. The League of Nations: Structure and Failures |

Covenant: The founding charter of the League, incorporated into each peace treaty. It outlined the League’s aims of collective security, disarmament, and peaceful dispute resolution. Article 10 committed members to preserve each other’s territorial integrity.

Collective security: The idea that an attack on one member would be treated as an attack on all, to be met with economic or military sanctions. In practice, it failed because members were reluctant to sacrifice their own interests or troops.

Manchurian Crisis (1931–33): Japan invaded Manchuria, a resource-rich region of China. The League took too long to investigate and failed to impose meaningful sanctions. Japan simply left the League, demonstrating that the body was powerless against determined aggression.

Abyssinian Crisis (1935–36): Mussolini’s Italy invaded Abyssinia (Ethiopia). The League imposed limited sanctions but did not ban vital oil sales. Britain and France secretly negotiated the Hoare-Laval Pact, undermining collective security and encouraging further aggression.

7. Hitler’s Foreign Policy and Appeasement |

Rearmament: From 1935, Hitler openly defied the Treaty of Versailles by reintroducing conscription and expanding the army, navy, and new air force (Luftwaffe). This rapid military build-up gave him the confidence to pursue aggressive territorial expansion.

Remilitarisation of the Rhineland (1936): German troops marched into the demilitarised zone. It was a huge gamble; the French and British offered no resistance. This success boosted Hitler’s domestic popularity and allowed him to fortify Germany’s western border.

Anschluss (1938): The union of Germany and Austria, explicitly forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles. After a rigged plebiscite, Austria was annexed. The international community did little beyond diplomatic protests, reinforcing Hitler’s belief that he could act without serious consequences.

Appeasement: The policy of granting concessions to Hitler to avoid war, most infamously at the Munich Agreement (1938), which gave him the Sudetenland. Appeasement was motivated by fear of another war and a belief that Hitler’s demands were limited. It ultimately failed, as it encouraged further aggression.

8. Origins of the Cold War |

Ideological divide: The fundamental clash between the capitalist, democratic values of the USA and the communist, one-party system of the USSR. Each superpower viewed the other as an existential threat, shaping their post-war foreign policies.

Yalta Conference (February 1945): Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin met to plan post-war Europe. They agreed on the division of Germany, free elections in Eastern Europe, and Soviet entry into the war against Japan. Later, Stalin’s failure to honour the promise of free elections caused deep mistrust.

Potsdam Conference (July–August 1945): New tensions emerged after Truman replaced Roosevelt and Stalin had extended control over Eastern Europe. Disagreements on Germany’s treatment and reparations hardened the division that became the Cold War.

Truman Doctrine (1947): President Truman’s policy of containment, pledging US support to any nation threatened by communism. It was first applied with aid to Greece and Turkey, and it signalled America’s commitment to resist Soviet expansion.

9. The Berlin Blockade and Korean War |

Berlin Blockade (1948–49): Stalin cut off all road and rail access to West Berlin in an attempt to force the Western allies out of the city. The Western response was the Berlin Airlift, which supplied the city for almost a year, eventually forcing Stalin to lift the blockade.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO, 1949): A military alliance formed by the USA, Canada, and ten Western European nations, based on the principle that an attack on one was an attack on all. It was the first time the US entered a peacetime military alliance, locking itself into European security.
