📚 Year 11 OCR Politics: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | Year 11 OCR

Welcome to your summer bridging course for OCR A-Level Politics. Whether you have studied Citizenship at GCSE or are completely new to the subject, this programme will introduce you to the core concepts, institutions and debates that form the foundation of the OCR specification. The goal is not to cover the entire syllabus in advance, but to equip you with the vocabulary, analytical skills and confidence to excel from your very first lesson in September.

1. What is Politics? |

Politics is often defined as the process by which groups of people make collective decisions. It involves negotiation, persuasion, compromise and the exercise of power. In its broadest sense, politics occurs not only in parliaments and elections, but also in families, workplaces and communities. For OCR, we focus primarily on the politics of the United Kingdom, political ideas, and the comparative study of the US political system.

2. Power, Authority and Legitimacy |

Power is the ability to make others do something they would not otherwise do. Authority, by contrast, is the right to exercise power, and legitimacy is the belief that this right is justified. In a democracy, authority is derived from the consent of the governed. These three concepts form the bedrock of political analysis, helping us examine why citizens usually obey laws and when they might withdraw their consent.

3. Democracy and Its Forms |

Democracy literally means ‘rule by the people’. Direct democracy sees citizens vote on every major decision, as in ancient Athens or modern referendums. Representative democracy is more common: voters elect officials to make decisions on their behalf. OCR expects you to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each form, including issues of participation, accountability and voter apathy.

4. The Nature of the UK Constitution |

The United Kingdom has an uncodified constitution, meaning it is not written down in a single document. Instead, it is drawn from statutes, common law, conventions and authoritative works. This evolutionary nature allows for flexibility but also raises debates about clarity and the protection of rights. Key principles include parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law and a unitary state structure.

5. Parliament: Structure and Functions |

The UK Parliament is bicameral, comprising the House of Commons, the elected lower chamber, and the House of Lords, the appointed upper chamber. Together with the monarch, they form the legislature. Parliament’s main functions are legislation, scrutiny of the executive, representation and deliberation. Understanding the legislative process from green paper to royal assent is essential for the UK Politics paper.

6. The Prime Minister and Cabinet |

The Prime Minister is the head of the UK government, traditionally the leader of the largest party in the House of Commons. The Cabinet is a committee of senior ministers chosen by the PM. Their collective responsibility means that once a decision is made, all Cabinet members must publicly support it. OCR requires you to analyse the sources of prime ministerial power and the constraints on it, such as the media, parliament and the party.

7. The Judiciary and the Rule of Law |

Following the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, a Supreme Court was established, separating the judiciary from the House of Lords. The principle of judicial independence means judges are free from political pressure. The rule of law holds that everyone is equal before the law and that the government itself must act within legal boundaries. Tensions can arise between judicial review and parliamentary sovereignty.

8. Elections and Voting Systems |

First-past-the-post (FPTP) is used for UK general elections, but other systems such as the Additional Member System (AMS) are used in devolved bodies. FPTP tends to produce strong, single-party government, but often at the cost of proportionality. Debates around electoral reform involve fairness, voter choice and the link between MPs and constituencies — all key themes for the OCR specification.

9. Political Parties: Ideology and Policy |

The main UK parties — Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrats — each have distinct ideological traditions. The Conservative Party draws on one-nation conservatism and Thatcherite free-market ideas. Labour has roots in democratic socialism and social democracy, more recently influenced by the Third Way. OCR asks you to trace how parties’ policies and philosophical underpinnings evolve over time.

10. Introduction to Core Political Ideas |

Liberalism emphasises individual freedom, reason and limited government. Key thinkers include John Locke and John Stuart Mill. Conservatism values tradition, authority and organic society, with Edmund Burke as a foundational figure. Socialism advocates for collective ownership and social equality, inspired by Karl Marx and Anthony Crosland. Understanding these core ideas will help you evaluate arguments across the entire course.

11. How to Analyse Political Sources and Arguments |

OCR exam questions often present a written or visual source followed by a short essay. You must learn to identify the author’s perspective, the evidence used and any underlying assumptions. Go beyond describing what is said — evaluate how convincing the argument is and why. Practise by reading a newspaper editorial each week and writing a one-paragraph critique: what is the main claim, and does the evidence support it?

12. Your Summer Study Plan |

A steady, low-pressure routine works better than last-minute cramming. Below is a suggested weekly framework that combines reading, viewing and writing. Adjust it to fit your schedule, but aim for consistency.
