📚 Year 11 WJEC Drama: Speaking & Listening Exam Preparation | Year 11 WJEC

In WJEC GCSE Drama, strong speaking and listening skills are not just helpful – they are at the heart of every component. Whether you are devising a new piece, performing a scripted role or giving feedback in rehearsal, how you use your voice and how well you listen to others shape the quality of your work and your final grade.

1. Understanding the Speaking & Listening Demands |

In the devising component, you will be assessed on how you communicate ideas during group discussions, respond to stimuli and contribute to the creative process. Your teacher will note how clearly you articulate your thoughts and how attentively you listen to suggestions from peers.

When performing scripted work, your vocal delivery and ability to react to other performers’ cues are key. Even during the written exam, you may be asked to reflect on how a performer uses voice to communicate meaning.

Therefore, treat every conversation in the drama studio as an opportunity to practise these assessed skills. Good speaking and listening habits will become second nature by the time you are formally assessed.

2. Vocal Projection and Clarity |

Projection means using your breath support to fill the performance space with your voice without shouting. Tense shoulders and shallow breaths kill projection, so practise deep diaphragmatic breathing.

Clarity depends on crisp articulation. Warm up your articulators – tongue, lips, jaw – before any speaking task. Tongue twisters such as ‘Red lorry, yellow lorry’ can sharpen your diction.

Remember that consonants carry meaning; if you swallow the ends of words, your audience loses the sense. Practise ending words cleanly, especially ‘t’, ‘d’ and ‘k’ sounds.

3. Using Pitch, Pace and Pause |

Varying your pitch prevents your delivery from becoming a monotone drone. A higher pitch can suggest excitement or fear, while a lower pitch often conveys authority or sadness. Experiment with a three-note range in a single line.

Pace creates dramatic tension. Rapid speech can signal panic or joy; deliberately slow speech can build suspense or show thoughtfulness. Never rush because you are nervous – the pause is your friend.

A well-placed pause gives the audience time to absorb what has just been said and makes you appear in control. Count ‘one, two’ silently before delivering a crucial line.

4. Making Vocal Choices for Character |

Every character has a unique voice. Consider age, status, background and emotional state. A nervous character might speak with a higher pitch and frequent hesitations, while a confident leader would use a steady pace and full projection.

Accents and dialects can be effective but must be consistent and respectful. If you are not confident with a full accent, suggest it through a few key vowel shifts rather than a caricature.

Record yourself and listen back. Does your voice genuinely sound like that character, or does it still sound like ‘you’ reciting lines? Adjust small details – a gravelly tone, a breathy quality – until the voice feels embodied.

5. Integrating Body Language with Speech |

Your body speaks as loudly as your voice. Gestures, posture and facial expressions must match the words you are saying. If your character is pleading, hands open and leaning forward can reinforce the vocal plea.

Eye contact builds connection. In a monologue, imagine a specific person or object you are speaking to. In dialogue, genuinely look at your scene partner and respond to what you see.

Avoid fidgeting that distracts from your speech. Stillness can be powerful. Practise delivering a speech while standing in neutral, using only eye and facial shifts, then add purposeful gestures.

6. Active Listening in Rehearsals |

Active listening means concentrating fully on what is being said, not just waiting for your turn to speak. In devising, you need to build on classmates’ ideas, which requires you to really hear them first.

Show you are listening with small verbal prompts like ‘Yes’, ‘I see’, and with nods. Paraphrase what someone said before adding your own thought: ‘So, you’re suggesting that… I could add…’

During script read-throughs, listen for cues. When your scene partner says a line, your reaction as a listener – even a silent one – must be truthful and visible. Good listening makes your acting believable.

7. Giving and Receiving Constructive Feedback |

In drama, feedback is a constant cycle. When you offer feedback, use the ‘What Went Well, Even Better If’ structure. Be specific: ‘Your pause after the revelation was powerful. To make it even stronger, you could hold it a second longer.’

When receiving feedback, resist the urge to explain or defend. Simply listen, thank the person, and then decide which points to try out. Jot down notes quickly so you don’t forget.

Use peer feedback to refine your vocal choices. If two people independently say ‘I couldn’t hear your last line’, treat it as a fact, not an attack, and work on projection.

8. Improvisation and Spontaneous Speaking |

Improvisation tasks test your ability to listen and respond in character without a script. The golden rule is ‘Yes, and…’ – accept what your partner offers and build on it. Saying ‘No’ kills the scene.

If you get stuck, focus on your character’s objective. What does your character want in this moment? Let that desire guide your next line. Even simple objectives like ‘I want to leave this room’ can fuel a scene.

Practise short impromptu speeches on random topics for one minute. This builds your ability to structure thoughts quickly and speak without awkward silences, a skill that boosts both devising discussions and performance confidence.

9. Preparing a Monologue for Assessment |

Choose a monologue that genuinely interests you and is age‑appropriate. Know the context of the whole play, not just the extract. Who is your character speaking to? What has just happened?

Break the text into beats – small sections where the thought or emotion shifts. Mark where you might change your pace, pause or alter your vocal tone. This turns a block of text into a journey.

Learn lines so thoroughly that they become your own thoughts. If you are struggling to remember a phrase, try associating it with a physical action – this muscle memory is a powerful anchor.

10. Listening to Directorial Input |

Whether your teacher, an external examiner or a student director is guiding you, the ability to take direction quickly and visibly is assessed. Nod, make eye contact and immediately try the adjustment.

If you do not understand a direction, ask a specific question: ‘Would you like me to make that line more desperate or colder?’ This shows you are engaged and thinking analytically.

After receiving direction, reflect the note back in your performance not just once but consistently. Directors notice when you have truly absorbed their feedback and maintain the change throughout.

11. Building Confidence for Oral Tasks |

Nerves are normal. Reframe nervous energy as excitement – both feel similar in the body. Before you speak, take three deep belly breaths. This steadies your voice and clears your mind.

Visualisation helps: close your eyes and mentally rehearse your successful performance, hearing your voice strong and steady. Your brain registers this practice almost like a real experience.

Start every drama lesson by contributing one small thing – an idea, a question, a line reading. These micro‑risks build the habit of speaking out, so that by assessment day it feels routine.

12. Practical Exam-Day Tips |

Warm up your voice gently in private: hum, do gentle sirens from low to high, and massage your jaw. Avoid dairy and caffeine just before – they can create mucus or make your voice shaky.

When the assessment begins, plant your feet firmly to ground yourself. If your mind goes blank, pause, take a breath and trust that the next line will come. Audiences would rather see a moment of recovery than a rush of garbled words.

Stay in character until the very end. Even after the final line, hold your focus for a beat before relaxing. Your listening and speaking work continues until the moment you step out of the role.
