1. Overview of the WJEC GCSE Sociology Syllabus | WJEC GCSE

The WJEC GCSE Sociology qualification is designed to give you a broad introduction to the study of society. In Year 11, you will consolidate learning across two examined components: Unit 1 Understanding Social Processes, and Unit 2 Understanding Social Structures. Each unit is assessed by a 1 hour 45 minute written paper, each worth 50% of your final grade. The syllabus blends key themes — culture, identity, family, education, crime, and stratification — with both classical and contemporary sociological perspectives.

The specification places strong emphasis on applying knowledge to contemporary British society. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between individuals and social structures, and you must be able to evaluate evidence and research methods. Examiners expect you to use key terms accurately and to link concepts to real-world examples. A firm grasp of the syllabus structure is your first step towards an organised revision plan.

2. Key Concepts and Cultural Transmission |

This foundational topic introduces the building blocks of sociological thinking. You will explore what is meant by culture, norms, values, roles, and status. The distinction between ascribed and achieved status is essential here, as is the difference between role conflict and role strain. You will also examine the process of socialisation — the lifelong process through which we learn the culture of our society — and its two main forms: primary socialisation, typically within the family, and secondary socialisation through agents such as education, peer groups, and the media.

You need to understand the concept of social control, both formal and informal. Formal social control involves written rules and sanctions enforced by agencies like the police and criminal justice system. Informal social control relies on unwritten rules and is maintained through mechanisms such as peer pressure and family expectations. The debate about nature versus nurture is also central: are we shaped more by our biology or by our social environment? Sociologists argue powerfully for the nurture side, demonstrating how feral children studies and cross-cultural comparisons reveal the dominance of social learning.

3. Sociology of the Family |

In this section, you dissect the family as a fundamental social institution. You begin by comparing different family types: the nuclear family, extended family, reconstituted family, lone-parent family, and same-sex family. You should be able to describe the characteristics of each and analyse how the popularity of these forms has changed over time in the UK, using evidence like divorce rates, cohabitation trends, and singlehood statistics.

You will then evaluate sociological theories of the family. Functionalism, represented by George Murdock and Talcott Parsons, views the family as performing essential functions for both individuals and society — including reproduction, primary socialisation, and the stabilisation of adult personalities. In contrast, feminist perspectives critically examine the family as a site of gender inequality, highlighting the unequal division of domestic labour and the darker side of family life, such as domestic violence. Marxist approaches, inspired by the work of Friedrich Engels, see the family as a tool for maintaining class inequality by passing on private property and reinforcing capitalist ideology.

A further key debate centres on the symmetrical family thesis. Willmott and Young argued that families in modern Britain are becoming more equal, with shared conjugal roles and joint decision-making. Yet other sociologists, such as Ann Oakley, have challenged this optimistic view, pointing out that women still carry a dual burden or even a triple shift of paid work, housework, and emotional labour. You are expected to weigh these arguments using contemporary data and to discuss the concept of the ‘new man’ critically.

4. Sociology of Education |

The education topic examines the role of the school system in society. You will start by considering the functions of education according to different perspectives. Functionalists identify the transmission of culture, the teaching of specialist skills, and the allocation of roles through meritocratic selection as core functions. Parsons, for instance, described school as a ‘bridge’ between the family and the wider society, where particularistic standards are replaced by universalistic ones.

However, conflict theories offer a starkly different picture. Marxists such as Bowles and Gintis argue that education in capitalist societies is designed to reproduce the existing class structure. Their correspondence principle suggests that the hierarchy and discipline of schools mirror the workplace, preparing working-class students for subordinate roles. Althusser saw education as part of the ideological state apparatus that spreads ruling-class ideas. Meanwhile, interactionist perspectives zoom in on the micro-processes inside schools, investigating how teacher labelling and self-fulfilling prophecies influence pupil achievement and identity, a point powerfully made by studies like those of Rosenthal and Jacobson.

You must also explain differential educational achievement by social class, gender, and ethnicity. Key explanations for class differences include material deprivation (poor housing, lack of resources) and cultural deprivation (language codes, parental attitudes). Gender gap discussions now frequently highlight the underperformance of working-class boys, exploring concepts like laddish subcultures and the crisis of masculinity. For ethnicity, factors such as institutional racism, curriculum ethnocentrism, and family structure are evaluated. You will be expected to support your analysis with data from official statistics and to examine government policies aimed at reducing inequality, such as pupil premium and compensatory education initiatives.

5. Sociological Research Methods |

Mastering research methods is critical, as you will apply them across all topics. This section begins with the fundamental distinction between positivism and interpretivism. Positivists, such as Durkheim, prefer quantitative methods and seek to discover cause-and-effect relationships, treating social facts as things. Interpretivists, like Weber and Blumer, favour qualitative methods and aim to uncover the meanings that lie behind social action, using verstehen (empathetic understanding). Your choice of method is therefore shaped by your theoretical standpoint.

You will learn to evaluate a range of specific methods. Questionnaires and structured interviews provide standardised data that is easy to quantify and replicate, but they risk imposing the researcher’s meanings and have low validity for exploring complex feelings. Unstructured interviews and observation — including participant observation like Laud Humphreys’ ‘Tearoom Trade’ study — generate rich, detailed insights but present serious ethical and practical difficulties, such as gaining entry and maintaining objectivity. Official statistics are a quick and accessible source of background data, but they are socially constructed and may reflect institutional biases. The syllabus also expects you to understand the uses of documents, longitudinal studies, and case studies as alternative approaches.

No discussion of methods is complete without addressing ethics. You must be able to weigh research against ethical guidelines set by bodies like the British Sociological Association: informed consent, confidentiality, protection from harm, and the avoidance of deception. Every named study you revise should be considered through both a methodological and an ethical lens, and you should be prepared to suggest hypothetical improvements to flawed research designs.

6. Social Stratification and Differentiation |

Stratification refers to the way society is divided into hierarchical layers based on factors like class, gender, and ethnicity. You will start by unpacking different systems of stratification: slavery, caste, estate, and class. The UK is a class-based society, and you need to describe how sociologists measure class using scales such as the National Statistics Socio-Economic Classification (NS-SEC). Particular attention should be paid to the existence of an underclass, a concept advanced by Charles Murray and others to describe a group at the bottom of the class structure who are allegedly separated from mainstream values.

Functionalist theories, such as Davis and Moore’s role allocation thesis, claim that stratification is a functional necessity: high rewards are needed to attract the most talented individuals into the most functionally important positions. You need to be able to criticise this view thoroughly. Conflict theories, especially Marxism, see class stratification as the product of exploitation. The bourgeoisie own the means of production and exploit the proletariat, leading to class conflict. Weber added important nuance, identifying three dimensions of stratification: class (economic), status (social prestige), and party (political power). Intersectionality, a contemporary concept highlighted by black feminists, emphasises that different forms of stratification interlock and cannot be examined in isolation.

Gender stratification examines how life chances are distributed unequally between men and women. You will analyse the gender pay gap, the glass ceiling, and occupational segregation. The debate between liberal, radical, and Marxist feminism must be understood. For ethnicity, you will explore evidence of institutional racism in areas such as employment, housing, and the criminal justice system. The concept of poverty — absolute and relative — runs through all stratification discussion, as does the debate about the welfare state’s role in either supporting or stigmatising the poor.

7. Crime and Deviance |

The study of crime and deviance explores why some acts come to be defined as criminal or deviant, and who gets labelled as such. You must first grasp the crucial difference: deviant acts break social norms but may not be illegal, while criminal acts break formal laws. What counts as deviant varies across cultures and over time, a point that introduces the concept of social construction. Sociologists like Howard Becker argue that no act is inherently deviant; it becomes deviant only when a social audience labels it so.

You will need to compare biological, psychological, and sociological explanations of crime. The syllabus focuses on sociological approaches, which you will split into functionalist, subcultural, Marxist, interactionist, and feminist. Functionalists like Durkheim see a certain level of crime as normal and even functional for boundary maintenance and social change. Merton’s strain theory suggests that crime occurs when individuals cannot achieve socially approved goals through legitimate means, leading to adaptations like innovation or retreatism. Subcultural theorists, such as Albert Cohen, explain how working-class boys form delinquent subcultures as a way of gaining status through alternative values.

Marxists connect crime to the capitalist system, arguing that the ruling class controls the state and often escapes punishment for corporate crimes, which cause far more damage than street crime. Interactionism, led by Becker, developed labelling theory: the idea that being publicly labelled a criminal can lead to a master status and a self-fulfilling prophecy, pushing the individual into a deviant career. A significant area of the syllabus is the social distribution of crime by age, gender, ethnicity, and class. Official statistics consistently show that young, working-class males from some ethnic minority backgrounds are over-represented in the criminal justice system. You must evaluate competing explanations: do these statistics reflect higher rates of offending, or do they reflect institutional racism and differential policing practices? A balanced answer will always consider both sides.

8. Applied Methods of Sociological Enquiry |

This component of the syllabus links your knowledge of research methods directly to the substantive topics of family, education, and crime. You will be presented with a scenario or a specific research question, and you need to design a study, justify your choices, and anticipate practical and ethical problems. For example, you might be asked how you would investigate parental attitudes towards single-sex education, or why a researcher studying gang culture chose covert participant observation rather than structured interviews.

The key skill here is the ability to match method to context. A study of sensitive classroom interactions might benefit from unstructured observation, whereas measuring attainment trends across different social groups would suit quantitative analysis of secondary data. You must consider sampling techniques — random, stratified, snowball — and be ready to explain how you would gain access to a group and establish rapport. Triangulation, or the use of multiple methods to check validity, is a strong concept to deploy in your answers. Time management, cost, and researcher safety are all legitimate factors that examiners expect you to discuss.

You should also practise critiquing sample descriptions of research. The specification often requires you to identify strengths and weaknesses in a given piece of methodology. Does the sample size allow for generalisation? Is the operationalisation of concepts clear? Does the method risk social desirability bias or the Hawthorne effect? By weaving these keywords into your evaluation, you demonstrate the sophistication that distinguishes high-grade answers.

9. Assessment Objectives and Exam Technique |

Understanding exactly what the examiner is looking for can transform your performance. The WJEC GCSE Sociology papers are built around three Assessment Objectives (AOs). AO1 tests your ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, and evidence. AO2 requires you to apply this knowledge to a range of contexts and to interpret data. AO3 is the highest-weighted objective, focusing on analysis and evaluation of sociological ideas, research methods, and evidence. A well-structured answer will always balance description (AO1) with at least as much evaluation (AO3).

The question formats include short definitions, ‘describe’ and ‘explain’ items, and extended essays. For the 15-mark essay questions — often phrased as a discussion — you need a clear introduction stating your line of argument, at least two well-developed paragraphs each containing a distinct point backed by theory and evidence, and a reasoned conclusion. Use evaluative phrases like ‘however’, ‘on the other hand’, and ‘a weakness of this explanation is…’ to constantly show AO3 skill. Additionally, you will encounter questions that ask you to ‘apply from the item’, where a short unseen text provides stimulus. Your answers must explicitly reference this material, using it as a springboard rather than simply copying it out.

Timing is critical. With roughly a minute per mark, you must practise dividing your time proportionally between short questions and essays. A common mistake is spending too long on a 4-mark definition and running out of time for the 15-mark essay. Regular timed practice using past papers from the WJEC secure website or your teacher’s resources is the single most effective way to improve both your knowledge and your exam stamina.

10. Revision Strategies and Final Preparation |

A systematic revision plan makes all the difference. Begin by downloading the full specification from the WJEC website and using it as a checklist, ticking off each topic as you feel confident. Create concise mind maps for each key perspective: functionalism, Marxism, feminism, and interactionism. For each, list the key concepts, named sociologists, and a couple of critical evaluation points. This helps you avoid the trap of writing one-sided answers. Use index cards to record key studies with the format: researcher, year, method, findings, and a strong criticism.

Active recall is far more effective than passive reading. Cover a topic, then write down everything you remember without looking at your notes. Afterwards, check for gaps and misunderstandings. Drawing connections between topics is another high-value activity. For example, could a functionalist explanation of family be linked to a functionalist view of crime? How might a feminist criticise both? The ability to make these synoptic links is exactly what raises a middling answer into the top band. Group revision can also be helpful if you stay focused; try teaching a difficult concept to a friend, as the act of explaining out loud consolidates your own understanding.

In the final days before the exam, shift your focus to applying knowledge under timed conditions. Select a handful of challenging essay questions and write full plans, including a thesis statement and the evidence you would use. Do not overload yourself with new material; instead, strengthen your command of the core studies and perspectives. Get plenty of sleep, and approach the exam hall confident that you have prepared with precision. Remember, sociology is about understanding the world around you — bring that curiosity into your answers, and you will write with genuine engagement.
