📚 Year 12 CCEA Maths: Vocabulary Mnemonics Guide | CCEA 数学词汇术语速记指南

Mastering mathematical terminology is like learning a new language. For CCEA Year 12 students, a firm grasp of key terms unlocks exam questions and makes revision far less stressful. This guide pairs every essential word with a simple memory trick, helping you move from confusion to clarity without endless rote learning.

掌握数学术语就像学习一门新语言。对于CCEA 12年级学生来说,牢固掌握关键术语能帮助你快速读懂考题,让复习事半功倍。这本指南为每个核心词汇都配上了简单好用的记忆窍门,带你告别死记硬背,从困惑走向清晰。

1. Basic Operations Vocabulary | 基本运算词汇

The four pillars of arithmetic appear everywhere. Know exactly what ‘sum’, ‘product’, ‘difference’ and ‘quotient’ mean, and you’ll never misread a question again.

加、减、乘、除四则运算是数学的基石。准确理解 sum、product、difference 和 quotient 的含义,你就再也不会误读题目了。

  • Sum (和) – result of addition. Think: ‘Some’ numbers are added together.
  • Product (积) – result of multiplication. A ‘product’ is what a factory produces – multiplication ‘produces’ a bigger number.
  • Difference (差) – result of subtraction. Both words start with ‘d’: difference = subtract to see how different numbers are.
  • Quotient (商) – result of division. ‘Quo’ sounds like ‘quote’; division gives you a ‘quote’ of the whole.

🔹 记住:sum 与“加”谐音联想;product 像工厂生产,乘法让数字变多;difference 和减法都带“差”字;quotient 开头的 ‘quo’ 像“括”,除法就是把整体分成几份。

2. Algebraic Fundamentals | 代数基础术语

Algebra can feel abstract, but its vocabulary describes simple building blocks. Lock in ‘variable’, ‘coefficient’, ‘constant’ and ‘expression’, and you have the keys to the subject.

代数可能让人觉得抽象,但它的词汇描述的都是简单的构件。记住 variable、coefficient、constant 和 expression,你就掌握了这门学科的关键。

  • Variable (变量) – a symbol, often x or y, that can change. Think ‘vary-able’: able to vary.
  • Coefficient (系数) – the number multiplying a variable (e.g. 3 in 3x). ‘Co-‘ means together with; the coefficient works together with the variable.
  • Constant (常数) – a fixed number, like 5. It stays ‘constant’ and never changes.
  • Expression (表达式) – a combination of numbers, variables and operations without an equals sign (e.g. 2x + 7). It ‘expresses’ a mathematical idea.

🔹 变量是“可变的”;系数与变量“合作”;常数始终“恒定”;表达式“表达”一个计算意图。

3. Geometry Essentials | 几何核心词汇

Shapes and their properties rely on precise language. Words like ‘parallel’, ‘perpendicular’ and ‘congruent’ describe relationships that pop up in proofs and coordinate geometry.

图形及其性质依赖于精确的语言。parallel、perpendicular 和 congruent 这类词描述的几何关系经常出现在证明和解析几何里。

  • Parallel (平行) – lines that never meet. Picture two ‘l’s running side by side forever.
  • Perpendicular (垂直) – lines that intersect at 90°. ‘Per-‘ means thoroughly; imagine a perfect right angle.
  • Congruent (全等) – identical in shape and size. ‘Con-‘ (together) + ‘gruent’ (agree): everything agrees exactly.
  • Bisect (平分) – divide into two equal parts. ‘Bi-‘ = two, ‘sect’ = cut, like a sector.

🔹 平行线像两条平行的铁轨;垂直的 ‘r’ 像直角符号;全等是完全一致;平分是一分为二。

4. Trigonometric Terms | 三角学词汇

Sine, cosine and tangent can be tongue-twisters, but they describe ratios in right-angled triangles. The classic memory aid SOH CAH TOA is your best friend here.

正弦、余弦和正切念起来可能有点拗口,但它们描述的是直角三角形中的边长比。经典的口诀 SOH CAH TOA 会是你最好的帮手。

  • Hypotenuse (斜边) – the longest side, opposite the right angle. ‘Hypo’ means under, ‘tenuse’ relates to stretching; it stretches under the right angle.
  • Opposite (对边) – the side facing the angle in question. Simply the ‘opposite’ side.
  • Adjacent (邻边) – the side next to the angle, not the hypotenuse. ‘Ad-‘ = next to, like adjacent rooms.
  • SOH CAH TOA: Sine = Opposite / Hypotenuse, Cosine = Adjacent / Hypotenuse, Tangent = Opposite / Adjacent.

🔹 斜边的英文 hypo 像“海铺”,最长的边铺在下面;对边直接对着角;邻边挨着角。SOH CAH TOA 反复默念就能记住比值顺序。

5. Statistics & Probability | 统计与概率用语

Data questions use words like ‘mean’, ‘median’ and ‘mode’ which are often mixed up. Once you link each word to its meaning with a simple story, they’ll stick.

数据题常用的 mean、median 和 mode 经常被混淆。一旦把每个词和它的含义用一个小故事联系起来,它们就会牢牢记住。

  • Mean (平均数) – the average, calculated by sum ÷ count. Think ‘mean’ as in ‘the most moderate’ value.
  • Median (中位数) – the middle value when data is ordered. ‘Median’ sounds like ‘medium’ – right in the middle.
  • Mode (众数) – the most frequent value. ‘Mode’ rhymes with ‘most’ – it appears most often.
  • Range (极差) – maximum minus minimum. The range shows how far data ‘ranges’ across.

🔹 平均数 mean 是“平均”的直译;中位数 median 与 medium(中间)同源;众数 mode 出现“最多”;极差 range 是数据范围。

6. Functions & Graphs | 函数与图像术语

Function notation f(x) can look intimidating. But ‘domain’, ‘range’, ‘composite’ and ‘inverse’ are just labels for input, output, chaining and reversing – all very intuitive.

函数符号 f(x) 可能看起来有点吓人。但 domain、range、composite 和 inverse 不过是输入、输出、串联和反转的标签,都很直观。

  • Domain (定义域) – all possible input x-values. ‘Domain’ is like the kingdom where the function rules.
  • Range (值域) – all possible output y-values. The ‘range’ of mountains shows all the heights.
  • Composite function (复合函数) – one function inside another, f(g(x)). ‘Composite’ means made of several parts.
  • Inverse function (反函数) – reverses the original function, f⁻¹(x). ‘Inverse’ means opposite direction.

🔹 定义域是函数“领地”;值域是函数输出“范围”;复合函数像套娃;反函数是“逆向”操作。

7. Sequences & Series | 数列与级数术语

Arithmetic and geometric sequences each have a ‘common difference’ or ‘common ratio’. Recognising these patterns quickly saves time in exams.

等差数列和等比数列分别有“公差”和“公比”。快速识别这些模式能在考试中节省宝贵时间。

  • Arithmetic sequence (等差数列) – adds a fixed number each time. ‘Arithmetic’ sounds like ‘a rhythm’ – steady beat, steady addition.
  • Geometric sequence (等比数列) – multiplies by a fixed number each time. ‘Geo-metric’ suggests exponential growth, like geometric shapes expanding.
  • Common difference (公差) – the constant added in an arithmetic sequence. ‘Difference’ reminds you it’s subtraction to find the step.
  • Common ratio (公比) – the constant multiplier in a geometric sequence. ‘Ratio’ indicates division/multiplication.

🔹 等差数列像有节奏的步进;等比数列像几何级数膨胀;公差用减法找出差;公比用除法找出比。

8. Calculus Ready Terms | 微积分预备词汇

Though full calculus may be later, Year 12 introduces ‘gradient of a curve’, ‘tangent’ and the idea of ‘limit’. Building vocabulary now makes the transition seamless.

虽然完整的微积分可能稍后学习,但12年级引入了“曲线的梯度”、“切线”和“极限”的概念。现在就建立词汇基础,能让后续学习无缝衔接。

  • Gradient (梯度 / 斜率) – steepness of a line or curve. ‘Grade’ refers to slope on a road.
  • Tangent (切线) – a straight line that just touches a curve. ‘Tang-‘ means touch; think of ‘tangible’.
  • Limit (极限) – the value a function approaches. The ‘limit’ is the boundary it never quite reaches.
  • Derivative (导数) – the rate of change, gradient function. ‘Derive’ means to obtain from; the derivative comes from the original function.

🔹 梯度就像路面的坡度;切线仅仅接触而不穿过;极限是无限接近的边界;导数源于原函数的变化率。

9. Indices & Logarithms | 指数与对数用语

Exponential and logarithmic functions are inverse operations. The words ‘base’, ‘exponent’, ‘power’ and ‘logarithm’ describe a compact way to handle very large or small numbers.

指数函数和对数函数是互逆运算。base、exponent、power 和 logarithm 这些词描述了一种处理极大或极小数字的简洁方式。

  • Exponent / Index (指数) – the small raised number showing how many times the base is multiplied. ‘Ex-‘ means out, ‘ponent’ from put; it tells you how many to put out.
  • Base (底数) – the number being multiplied. The ‘base’ is the foundation of the power.
  • Power (幂) – the whole expression, e.g. 2³ is a power of 2. A powerful number grows quickly.
  • Logarithm (对数) – the exponent to which a base must be raised to obtain a number. ‘Logos’ (ratio) + ‘arithmos’ (number): a ratio of numbers.

🔹 指数像举起的数字指示乘几次;底数是根基;幂是整体的强大表达;对数是指数的逆运算伙伴。

10. Notation & Symbol Shortcuts | 符号与速记技巧

Mathematical symbols are a universal shorthand. Knowing what Σ, √, Δ, ⇒ and others stand for turns complex written statements into readable sentences.

数学符号是一种通用的速记法。了解 Σ、√、Δ、⇒ 等符号所代表的意义,能把复杂的书面表达变成可读的句子。

  • Σ (capital sigma) – sum of a series. Sigma starts with S, just like ‘Sum’.
  • √ (radical) – square root. The checkmark shape reminds you to ‘check’ what number squared gives the inside.
  • Δ (delta) – change or difference. ‘Delta’ begins with D, just like ‘Difference’.
  • ⇒ (implies) – logical consequence. The arrow points to the conclusion.
  • ⇔ (if and only if) – equivalence in both directions. Double-headed arrow.

🔹 Σ 像侧倒的 M 也是 Sum 的首字母;根号像在检查;Δ 是三角形也是“变差”;箭头直接表示逻辑方向。
