1. What is Sociology? |

Sociology is the systematic study of human social life, groups, and societies. It moves beyond common-sense explanations to examine how social structures, such as family, education, and the media, shape individual behaviour and identity. Sociologists ask critical questions: Why do some groups face inequality? How do norms and values become established? By using evidence and theory, sociology offers a powerful toolkit for understanding the interplay between the individual and society.

For CCEA students, the subject develops an awareness of cultural diversity and the influences that social forces have on people’s opportunities. It also encourages you to reflect on your own experiences, connecting personal troubles to public issues – a concept C. Wright Mills called ‘the sociological imagination’.

2. Key Sociological Concepts: Culture, Socialisation, Identity |

Culture refers to the whole way of life of a particular society, including its language, beliefs, norms, values, and material objects. It is learned and shared. Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the culture of their society, internalising its norms and values. Primary socialisation takes place in the family, while secondary socialisation occurs through education, peer groups, religion, and the media.

Identity is how we see ourselves and how others see us. Sociologists distinguish between personal identity and social identity. Sources of identity include social class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and nationality. A key CCEA concept is the active role individuals play in shaping their own identities, in contrast to being passively moulded by structure.

3. Theoretical Perspectives: An Overview |

Sociological theories provide frameworks for understanding society. The four major perspectives you will meet in Year 12 are: functionalism, Marxism, feminism, and interactionism. Each offers a different lens through which to analyse social institutions and human behaviour. The first three are macro-level, structural theories focusing on large-scale social forces, while interactionism is a micro-level theory that examines face-to-face interactions and meaning-making.

Understanding these perspectives is essential for the AS Unit 1 exam, where you will need to compare and contrast their explanations of social order, conflict, and change. The table below summarises their core features.

Functionalism
Society is a system of interrelated parts working together to maintain stability. Each institution performs a function for the whole. Value consensus, social solidarity, organic analogy, manifest/latent functions
Marxism
Society is shaped by economic base and class conflict. The bourgeoisie exploit the proletariat, creating inevitable conflict. Means of production, false consciousness, ideology, exploitation, alienation
Feminism
Gender inequality is the central feature of society. Patriarchal structures oppress women in both public and private spheres. Patriarchy, sex versus gender, liberal/radical/Marxist feminism, gender socialisation
Interactionism
互动论
Society is built up from everyday interactions. People actively create meanings and negotiate social reality. Labelling, looking-glass self, definition of the situation, stigma, symbolic meaning

4. Functionalism: Society as a System |

Functionalism regards society as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and stability. Emile Durkheim argued that shared norms and values – the collective conscience – bind people together. He used the organic analogy, comparing society to a living organism in which institutions such as the family, education, and religion function like organs, each contributing to the health of the whole. Talcott Parsons later expanded on this, outlining the roles of socialisation and social control in maintaining value consensus.

Functionalists see social stratification (unequal distribution of rewards) as both inevitable and positive, because the most important roles must be filled by the most talented people through meritocratic processes. Criticisms include its tendency to ignore conflict, justify inequality, and overstate the extent of consensus.

5. Marxism and Conflict Theory |

Marxism views society as a battleground between two main classes: the bourgeoisie (owners of the means of production) and the proletariat (workers who sell their labour). Karl Marx argued that the economic base – the infrastructure – shapes the superstructure of society, including law, education, media, and politics. This means the dominant ideology reflects the interests of the ruling class, perpetuating false consciousness among the working class.

Contemporary Marxists, such as Althusser and Gramsci, developed concepts like ideological state apparatuses (education, media, religion) and hegemony to explain how the ruling class maintains control not only through force but also through ideas accepted as ‘common sense’. Feminists and weberians have criticised Marxism for focusing too narrowly on class and neglecting other dimensions of inequality, such as gender and status.

6. Feminism and Gender |

Feminist sociology centres on the analysis of gender inequality and the structures of patriarchy. Liberal feminists focus on legal and political discrimination, advocating for equal rights and opportunities within existing systems. Radical feminists argue that patriarchy is the deepest and most pervasive form of social inequality, rooted in biological differences and the domestic exploitation of women. Marxist feminists link women’s oppression to the demands of capitalism, noting how women’s unpaid domestic labour reproduces the next generation of workers at no cost to capitalists.

Sociologists also distinguish between sex (biological differences) and gender (culturally constructed expectations). In CCEA, you will examine how gender roles are socialised through family, peer groups, media, and education, and how these processes maintain gendered norms.

7. Interactionism and Social Action |

Interactionism shifts the focus from macro structures to everyday social interactions. This perspective, influenced by Max Weber’s concept of verstehen (empathetic understanding), argues that people are not passive puppets; they actively interpret and give meaning to the world. Herbert Blumer, building on George Herbert Mead’s work, stressed that society is constructed through symbolic communication. The self is developed through interaction, captured by the ‘looking-glass self’ concept: we see ourselves as we believe others see us.

Labelling theory, a major application in the study of education and crime, shows how social labels (such as ‘troublemaker’ or ‘bright’) can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Students who are negatively labelled may internalise that label and underachieve, while positive labels can boost performance. This micro-level analysis is a core part of the CCEA specification when exploring topics like identity formation and classroom dynamics.

8. Research Methods in Sociology |

AS Unit 2 requires you to understand how sociological knowledge is produced through research. Sociologists use a range of methods, broadly divided into quantitative (e.g. surveys, structured interviews, official statistics) and qualitative (e.g. participant observation, unstructured interviews, documents). Quantitative data is numerical and useful for identifying patterns; qualitative data is rich in detail and captures meanings. Selecting a method depends on theoretical position, practical constraints, and ethical considerations.

Key ethical principles include: informed consent, confidentiality, protection from harm, and avoidance of deception. In the exam, you will be expected to evaluate the strengths and limitations of different research designs, and to apply them to specific sociological questions, such as investigating the impact of social class on educational attainment.

9. Understanding Social Stratification: Class, Gender, Ethnicity |

Social stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of individuals and groups in society. CCEA examines several dimensions of stratification: social class, gender, ethnicity, and age. Class is traditionally linked to occupation and income. The Registrar General’s scale used manual/non-manual distinctions, while contemporary sociologists often use the NS-SEC classification based on employment relations. The work of Marx and Weber remains central to understanding class: Marx emphasised ownership of the means of production, while Weber added status and party (power) as independent dimensions.

Gender stratification draws attention to the pay gap, occupational segregation, and the ‘glass ceiling’. Ethnic stratification explores how discrimination and historical disadvantage shape life chances for minority ethnic groups. The concept of intersectionality highlights that these forms of stratification interact; for example, a working-class, ethnic minority woman may face overlapping disadvantages.

10. Introducing Education as a Sociological Topic |

Education is a popular optional topic in AS Unit 2. Sociologists investigate the role of the education system in transmitting culture, allocating roles, and reproducing inequality. Functionalists, like Durkheim and Parsons, see education as performing vital functions: social solidarity, teaching specialist skills, and promoting meritocracy. Parsons further argued that school is a ‘bridge’ between the particularistic standards of the family and the universalistic standards of wider society.

Marxists are more critical. Bowles and Gintis’s correspondence theory claims that the hidden curriculum mirrors the workplace, teaching obedience and acceptance of hierarchy, thus serving the capitalist class. Interactionist studies, such as those by Rosenthal and Jacobson, demonstrate the power of teacher expectations and labelling in producing differential educational outcomes. Ethnicity and gender patterns in attainment are also key areas of investigation.

11. How to Approach Sociology Essays |

Essay writing is a central skill in CCEA Sociology. A high-scoring response demonstrates knowledge, analysis, and evaluation. Begin with a clear line of argument – do not just list facts. Use PEEL paragraphs: Point, Evidence (theories, concepts, studies), Explanation (link back to the question), and Link to the next point. Counterarguments and evaluation are essential: compare perspectives, question the evidence, and discuss strengths and limitations.

For example, when answering a question on the role of education, you could first outline functionalist arguments, then challenge them with Marxist and feminist critiques, before bringing in interactionist research on labelling to illustrate micro-processes. Conclude by synthesising the arguments and stating which perspective you find most convincing, with justification.

12. Summer Reading and Activities |

To prepare for Year 12, start by reading a broad introductory text, such as the CCEA-endorsed textbook for AS Sociology. Keep a sociological diary: note down a news story, a conversation, or an observation each day, and try to link it to a concept or a theory. For example, a story about exam results can be analysed through class, gender, and labelling. Watching documentaries on topics like social mobility, crime, or family diversity will also reinforce your understanding.

Finally, practise constructing brief essay plans for classic questions: ‘Assess the functionalist view of the family,’ or ‘Evaluate the usefulness of participant observation.’ This will build the habit of critical thinking and make the transition to A-level study smooth and rewarding.
