📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 13 Edexcel Chemistry and How to Correct Them | 常见误区与纠正方法

A-Level Chemistry requires conceptual clarity, yet many students hold persistent misconceptions that hinder exam performance. This article addresses ten common mistakes in Year 13 Edexcel topics, explaining the correct chemical principles and how to avoid these errors.

1. Equilibrium and Catalysts |

Misconception: A catalyst increases the yield of products by shifting equilibrium to the right.

Correction: A catalyst provides an alternative pathway with lower activation energy for both forward and reverse reactions. It increases the rate of both directions equally, so the equilibrium constant Kc remains unchanged and the equilibrium position does not shift. The only effect is to reach equilibrium faster.

Many students think that Kc has no units, or forget to calculate units. The units of Kc depend on the stoichiometry of the reaction and must be derived from the concentration terms in the equilibrium expression. For example, for N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃, Kc = [NH₃]²/([N₂][H₂]³) has units dm⁶ mol⁻².
