1. The Simile Equation |

A simile is an explicit comparison between two unlike things, using a connecting word. It can be expressed as a simple equation that links the subject to a vivid image, making abstract ideas tangible.

Simile: Tenor + (like / as) + Vehicle → Vivid Imagery

The tenor is the object or idea being described; the vehicle is the imaginative image used to illuminate it. For example, in Robert Burns’s line ‘O my Luve is like a red, red rose’, the tenor is love, the vehicle is the red rose, and ‘like’ is the comparator. The formula transforms raw emotion into a concrete sensory experience.

Extended similes, or epic similes, multiply these elements across several lines, building a longer parabolic comparison, but the core equation remains the same—only repeated and deepened.

2. The Metaphor Identity |

A metaphor collapses the distance of simile and insists on a direct identity. Instead of saying one thing is like another, it declares that one thing is another, forcing the reader to fuse the two concepts.

Metaphor: A = B → Compressed Meaning

In Shakespeare’s ‘All the world’s a stage’, world (A) is equated with stage (B). No ‘like’ or ‘as’ here. The identity equation compresses meaning, implying that life is performative, scripted, and transient. The tension between the literal and the figurative generates layers of interpretation.

When a metaphor extends throughout a text—an extended metaphor or conceit—the formula is repeatedly applied, each new identity deepening the thematic argument. For instance, in John Donne’s ‘A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning’, the lovers are linked by a compass, turning the whole poem into a geometric meditation on connection.

3. The Personification Formula |

Personification grants human qualities, emotions, or actions to inanimate objects, animals, or abstract ideas. This formula reanimates the world, making it emotionally resonant.

Personification: Non-human Entity + Human Trait → Emotional Connection

When Sylvia Plath writes ‘The moon is no door. It is a face in its own right’, the moon receives a human facial identity. The equation works by collision: an object we think we know gains an unfamiliar interiority, startling the reader into a fresh perception.

Pathetic fallacy, a subset of this, specifically maps human emotion onto weather or landscape, following the rule: Setting’s Mood = Human Feeling + Natural Element. For example, a storm mirroring inner turmoil.

4. The Imagery Construction Set |

Imagery is not just visual but encompasses all five senses. The strength of an image depends on how many sensory domains it activates. Think of it as a sensory summation.

Imagery = Σ (Sight + Sound + Touch + Taste + Smell)

A fully realised image might combine multiple senses: ‘The sticky sweet scent of burnt toffee, with its crackling amber surface.’ This activates smell, touch, sight, and sound simultaneously. The more elements included, the more immersive the poetic reality becomes.

Sound 听觉 hiss, whisper, roar, rhythm, sibilance
Touch 触觉 gritty, silken, sharp, warmth, pressure
Taste 味觉 bitter, honeyed, acidic, metallic
Smell 嗅觉 musky, acrid, floral, burnt

5. The Iambic Pentameter Theorem |

In SQA English Literature, understanding rhythm is crucial. The most celebrated metre in English poetry is iambic pentameter, the heartbeat of Shakespeare and Milton. Its structural theorem is straightforward but yields infinite variety.

Iambic Pentameter: ( ˘ ´ ) × 5 per line

An iamb is a two-syllable foot consisting of an unstressed syllable (˘) followed by a stressed syllable (´). ‘Pentameter’ means five feet. So each line contains 10 syllables alternating unstressed/stressed: ˘ ´ ˘ ´ ˘ ´ ˘ ´ ˘ ´. Variations like trochee (´ ˘), spondee (´ ´), or pyrrhic (˘ ˘) create expressive shifts, but the underlying theorem remains the expectation against which variation is measured.

Blank verse—unrhymed iambic pentameter—allows a conversational grandeur. Its mathematical regularity supports profound emotional content, as seen in Macbeth’s ‘Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow’.

6. The Shakespearean Sonnet Structure Equation |

The sonnet is often described as a poem of 14 lines, but its argumentative force lies in its structural equation. Shakespearean or English sonnet follows a precise logical shape.

Sonnet = 3 Quatrains (abab cdcd efef) + 1 Couplet (gg) → Thematic Turn

The three quatrains, each developing a facet of the problem, culminate in the volta—a dramatic turn in argument or mood, often signalled by ‘But’, ‘Yet’, or ‘So’. The final rhymed couplet delivers a clinching, epigrammatic conclusion. The formula mirrors a syllogism: premise, development, counter-argument, resolution.

For example, Sonnet 18 (‘Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?’) sets up comparison, complicates it, and resolves with the couplet ‘So long as men can breathe …’ asserting eternal life through verse.

7. The Shakespearean Tragic Hero Formula |

Aristotle’s principles, refined through Shakespeare, provide a powerful theorem for understanding tragic protagonists. The fall of a great figure follows a recognizable causal chain.

Tragic Hero = Noble Stature + Hamartia → Peripeteia + Anagnorisis → Catharsis

The hero, someone of high rank and profound potential (noble stature), possesses a tragic flaw (hamartia)—ambition in Macbeth, jealousy in Othello, indecision in Hamlet. This flaw, under pressure, triggers a reversal of fortune (peripeteia), followed by a moment of shattering recognition (anagnorisis). The audience’s experience of pity and fear purges into catharsis, the emotional cleansing that is tragedy’s ultimate goal.

This framework is not a straitjacket but a diagnostic tool. When you map a character’s journey onto this formula, you expose the underlying machinery of the play.

8. The PEE(L) Critical Theorem | PEE(L)

Every analytical paragraph you write for SQA English Literature should be constructed as a logical proof. The PEE(L) model is your critical theorem for building an airtight argument.

PEE(L): Point + Evidence + Explanation (+ Link) → Validated Interpretation

State your Point (a claim about a technique or theme). Provide Evidence (a short, embedded quotation). Then Explain: unpack the connotations of specific words, their effect on the reader, and the writer’s purpose. The optional Link ties the paragraph to the next idea or back to the overall essay question, maintaining propulsion.

Example: Point: ‘Macbeth’s hallucinated dagger externalises his guilt.’ Evidence: ‘“Is this a dagger which I see before me …?”’ Explanation: ‘The tangible yet floating image suggests that his conscience has detached from his body, making his internal state violently visible …’

9. The Symbolism Decoder |

Symbolism permits objects, colours, or actions to carry meanings far beyond their literal nature. A symbol acts as a portal opening from the concrete to the abstract.

Symbol = Concrete Object × Context → Abstract Concept

A horse, in isolation, is an animal. In Ted Hughes’s poetry, the horse might symbolise primal energy; in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, it could represent the exploited proletariat. The ‘× Context’ multiplier is everything. The same object in different contexts reveals opposing values—light can symbolise knowledge or exposure, water life or destruction.

Recurring symbols weave a pattern; they become motifs. Spotting the recurrence of an image and tracing its evolving meaning is a high-band analytical move.

10. The Irony Spectrum |

Irony is not one thing; it operates on a spectrum of discrepancies. Understanding the type of irony at work allows you to dissect tone, tension, and authorial intent with precision.

  • Verbal Irony: Speaker says the opposite of what they mean. Equation: Stated Meaning ‘ ≠ ‘ Intended Meaning. Sarcasm is a sharpened subset.
  • Dramatic Irony: The audience possesses crucial knowledge that characters lack. Formula: Audience’s Knowledge > Character’s Knowledge → Tension.
  • Situational Irony: An outcome is starkly contrary to expectations. Equation: Expected Result vs. Actual Result → Poignant/Comic Twist.

In Romeo and Juliet, dramatic irony permeates the final scene—we know Juliet lives, but Romeo does not—creating agonising pathos. Identifying the ironic mode unlocks the emotional register.

11. The Character Arc Formula |

Dynamic characters undergo transformation. The character arc is a function of their desire, the obstacles they face, and the insight they gain. You can quantify that change for analysis.

Character Arc: (Initial Self + Desire) + Obstacle × Decision → Changed Self

In Shakespeare’s King Lear, the initial self is proud and blind. His desire for flattery leads to division; the obstacle (betrayal, madness, storm) forces a series of decisions that reveal his mortality and his bond with Cordelia. The changed self is humbled and heartbroken but fully human.

For a static character, the formula stagnates: Obstacles fail to provoke change, proving a thematic point about rigidity or victimhood.

12. The Theme Integration Rule |

Theme is never a single word like ‘ambition’; it is a full statement about the human condition that emerges from the interplay of character, conflict, and setting. Your task is to derive that statement using the integration rule.

Theme ≈ Central Conflict’s Resolution + Protagonist’s Fate + Recurring Imagery

Sum the outcome of the central conflict, the moral or emotional state of the protagonist at the end, and the resonance of a dominant image cluster. For Macbeth, the central conflict (tyranny vs order) resolves with tyranny’s destruction; the protagonist’s fate is nihilistic despair (‘a tale told by an idiot’); the recurring image cluster (blood, darkness, sleep) frames this as a violation of natural order. Hence the integrated theme might be: ‘Unchecked ambition dismantles both the individual psyche and the cosmic fabric.’

Always express theme as a sentence, not a label. This rule moves you from summary to true literary analysis.
