Mastering subject-specific vocabulary is a cornerstone of success in CIE A-Level Art & Design. Whether you are annotating a developmental workbook, analysing an artist’s work, or writing a personal study, precise terminology demonstrates critical understanding and helps you meet the assessment objectives AO1 (develop ideas) through to AO4 (present a personal response). This guide organises essential terms into ten focused sections to support quick recall and confident application in both practical and written components.
1. Formal Elements |
Line refers to a continuous mark made on a surface, which can vary in width, direction, length and character to define shapes, imply movement or express emotion.
Shape is a two-dimensional, enclosed area created when lines meet, or through changes in colour, tone or texture.
Form describes a three-dimensional object possessing height, width and depth; in two-dimensional work, form is suggested through shading, perspective and modelling.
Space refers to the area around, between or within components of a piece; positive space is occupied by the subject, while negative space is the empty area that defines boundaries.
Texture is the perceived surface quality of an artwork, which can be actual (tactile, impasto) or implied (simulated through mark-making).
Value (or tone) describes the lightness or darkness of a colour or of grey; strong value contrast can create dramatic emphasis and a sense of volume.
Colour is produced when light reflects off an object; it is discussed through hue (the colour family), saturation (intensity) and value (brightness).
2. Principles of Design |
Balance is the distribution of visual weight within a composition; it can be symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical (informal) or radial.

Emphasis (or focal point) is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention first, often achieved through contrast, isolation or placement.
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the artwork, often directed by lines, edges, shapes and colours.
Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work; repetition with variation can create rhythm.

Rhythm is created when one or more elements are used repeatedly to produce a feeling of organised movement, akin to a musical beat.
Unity (harmony) is the sense of cohesiveness where all parts of the design feel as though they belong together; variety prevents unity from becoming monotonous.
3. Colour Theory & Palette |
Hue is the name we give to a pure colour, such as red, blue or yellow, independent of its tint or shade.
Saturation (or chroma) describes the intensity or purity of a colour; a highly saturated colour appears vivid, while a desaturated colour looks muted or greyish.
Tint is created by adding white to a hue, making it lighter; shade is created by adding black, making it darker; tone is produced by adding grey.
Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (e.g. red and green) and create maximum contrast when placed side by side.
Analogous colours are groups of three hues that are next to each other on the wheel, such as blue, blue-green and green, producing serene and comfortable designs.
Warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) advance and suggest energy, while cool colours (blues, greens, purples) recede and evoke calm.
Limited palette means restricting the number of pigments to achieve colour harmony and unity; a Zorn palette, for example, uses just four colours.
4. Drawing & Mark-Making |
Hatching consists of closely spaced parallel lines used to create tonal or shading effects; the closer the lines, the darker the area appears.

Cross-hatching layers sets of parallel lines at different angles to build up a richer, more complex tonal range.
Stippling uses countless small dots to suggest tone and texture; the density of dots controls the value.
Contour drawing emphasises the outline and significant edges of a subject, often without lifting the drawing tool, to capture its essential mass and volume.
Gesture drawing is a rapid, expressive technique that captures the movement, posture and energy of a subject rather than precise details.
