1. The Philosophy of Religion: Arguments for the Existence of God |

Anselm’s ontological argument defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. He argues that existence in reality is greater than existence in the understanding alone, so God must exist in reality. Gaunilo countered with the perfect island analogy, suggesting the same logic could prove the existence of any perfect thing. Descartes later proposed a version based on the idea that existence is a perfection, thus a supremely perfect being must possess existence. However, Kant famously objected that existence is not a predicate; it does not add to the concept of a thing.

Cosmological arguments, such as Aquinas’s first three ways, begin from observable facts about the world. The argument from motion, from causation, and from contingency all conclude that there must be a first mover, an uncaused cause, or a necessary being. The Kalam cosmological argument, developed by Al-Ghazali and defended by William Lane Craig, emphasises that the universe had a beginning, and whatever begins to exist has a cause — that cause is God. Critics point to the possibility of an infinite regress or challenge the premise that everything must have a cause.

The teleological argument, most famously expressed in Paley’s watchmaker analogy, infers an intelligent designer from the apparent order and purpose in nature. Hume, in his Dialogues, anticipated many objections: the analogy is weak, the universe might be more like a vegetable than a machine, and even if a designer exists, it does not prove the God of classical theism. Modern versions appeal to the fine-tuning of the universe’s physical constants, but these remain contentious.

2. The Problem of Evil |

The logical problem of evil, articulated by Epicurus and refined by Mackie, asserts that the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. If God is willing to prevent evil but unable, He is not omnipotent; if able but unwilling, He is not omnibenevolent. Theodicies attempt to resolve this inconsistency. Augustine’s theodicy argues that evil is a privation of good and stems from the misuse of free will by angels and humans; it is not a positive substance created by God.

Irenaeus’s soul-making theodicy, developed by John Hick, sees evil as necessary for moral and spiritual growth. The world is a vale of soul-making where suffering enables humans to develop virtues such as compassion and courage. The evidential problem of evil focuses on the sheer quantity and apparently pointless nature of suffering, such as animal suffering, which seems to undercut any good-achieving purpose. The free will defence, often employed by Plantinga, maintains that it is logically possible that God could not create a world with morally free beings who never choose evil, thus preserving God’s goodness and omnipotence without fully explaining all instances of evil.

3. Religious Language |

The central question in religious language is whether talk about God can be meaningful. If God is transcendent, ordinary language may be inadequate. The via negativa asserts that we can only speak of God in negative terms, saying what God is not, to avoid anthropomorphism. Aquinas proposed analogical predication: terms like ‘good’ apply to God analogically, not univocally (in exactly the same sense) or equivocally (in a completely different sense). Paul Tillich argued that religious language is symbolic; symbols participate in the reality they point to and open up levels of reality otherwise closed.

Logical positivists, using the verification principle, declared religious statements meaningless because they are neither analytically true nor empirically verifiable. Antony Flew adapts this challenge with the ‘death by a thousand qualifications’ argument: believers so qualify their statements that they become unfalsifiable, and thus assert nothing. R.M. Hare responded with the concept of a ‘blik’ — a non-falsifiable frame of reference that shapes one’s experience, which can be meaningful without making empirical claims. Later, Wittgensteinians proposed that religious language operates within its own language game and form of life, with its own rules of meaning.

4. Ethics: Normative Ethical Theories |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory aiming to maximise happiness. Bentham’s act utilitarianism proposes the principle of utility and a hedonic calculus measuring pleasure by intensity, duration, certainty, and extent. Mill modified this with higher and lower pleasures, insisting that intellectual pleasures are qualitatively superior. However, utilitarianism faces criticisms: it ignores justice (e.g., punishing an innocent to please a mob), is too demanding, and reduces diverse values to a single metric.

Kantian deontology is grounded in the categorical imperative, which commands actions that can be universalised and treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means. For Kant, moral worth comes from acting out of duty, not inclination. The theory faces the problem of conflicting duties and the accusation of rigidity — for instance, forbidding lying even to a murderer at the door. Virtue ethics, rooted in Aristotle, shifts focus from acts to character. Eudaimonia (flourishing) is achieved by cultivating virtues (e.g., courage, temperance) as the mean between extremes. However, virtue ethics can be vague about how to act in particular situations and may struggle to resolve moral dilemmas.

5. Meta-ethics |

Meta-ethics examines what we are doing when we use moral language. Moral realism claims that moral properties exist mind-independently and moral statements can be true or false. Naturalism reduces moral properties to natural properties — e.g., ‘good’ means pleasure (Mill). Moore’s open question argument challenges naturalism: for any natural property N, we can still meaningfully ask, ‘Is N good?’, suggesting good is a simple, non-natural property known through intuition. Intuitionism thus holds that we grasp moral truths through a rational faculty.

Anti-realism denies objective moral properties. Emotivism, defended by Ayer, holds that moral utterances merely express emotions and aim to evoke similar feelings in others; they are not truth-apt. ‘Stealing is wrong’ just means ‘Boo to stealing!’ Prescriptivism, advanced by Hare, agrees that moral language is non-descriptive but claims it prescribes actions universally. So ‘stealing is wrong’ means ‘Do not steal’, guiding conduct. Error theory (Mackie) accepts that moral language aims at truth but argues all such claims are systematically false because no objective moral values exist.

6. Epistemology: The Definition of Knowledge |

Traditionally, knowledge is defined as justified true belief (JTB). A knows that p iff: (1) p is true, (2) A believes that p, and (3) A is justified in believing p. Gettier cases challenged this by presenting scenarios where JTB holds but knowledge seems absent. For example, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get the job and has ten coins in his pocket. Smith himself gets the job and, unbeknownst to him, also has ten coins. His belief ‘the man who will get the job has ten coins’ is true and justified, yet we hesitate to call it knowledge.

A 知道 p 当且仅当:(1) p 为真,(2) A 相信 p,且 (3) A 的信念 p 是得到辩护的。

Responses to Gettier include strengthening the justification condition (infallibilism — requiring absolute certainty), or adding a ‘no false lemmas’ condition (the justification must not rely on any false belief). Others propose causal or reliabilist theories: knowledge is a belief produced by a reliable cognitive process. While no consensus has emerged, the Gettier problem remains a vital springboard for contemporary epistemology.

7. Perception as a Source of Knowledge |

Direct realism claims we perceive physical objects directly and immediately. When I see a tree, the tree itself is present in my consciousness. This theory faces the argument from illusion: a stick half-submerged in water appears bent, but it is not bent; thus what we directly perceive is not the physical object but a mental representation, a sense-datum. Hallucination and perceptual variation further challenge direct realism, as they show perception does not always faithfully represent reality.

Indirect realism, championed by Locke, maintains that we perceive physical objects indirectly via sense-data. Material objects exist independently and cause our sense-data, which represent them. The primary/secondary quality distinction is crucial: primary qualities (shape, size, motion) resemble the object, while secondary qualities (colour, taste, sound) are merely powers to produce ideas in us. The main problem is scepticism about the external world: if we only ever access sense-data, how can we know there is a material world beyond them? Idealism, as in Berkeley, dissolves the problem by denying matter’s existence: to be is to be perceived (esse est percipi).

8. Rationalism vs. Empiricism |

The debate concerns the primary source of knowledge. Rationalists, such as Descartes and Leibniz, argue that reason alone can yield substantive knowledge about the world, independent of sensory experience. Descartes sought to build a foundation of indubitable knowledge starting from the Cogito (‘I think, therefore I am’), and then deducing God’s existence which guarantees clear and distinct ideas. Innate ideas — concepts like God, infinity, and mathematical truths — are implanted in the mind from birth. Leibniz added that innate ideas exist as dispositions or tendencies in the mind, like veins in a block of marble.

Empiricists, notably Locke and Hume, reject innate ideas. Locke argued the mind at birth is a tabula rasa (blank slate), and all ideas derive from sensation or reflection. Simple ideas combine into complex ideas. However, empiricism struggles to account for a priori knowledge such as mathematics and necessary truths. Hume went further, distinguishing relations of ideas (a priori, necessary) and matters of fact (a posteriori, contingent). He concluded that causal necessity is merely a habit of the mind, not rationally demonstrable, leading to profound scepticism about induction.

9. Philosophy of Mind: Dualism and Physicalism |

Substance dualism, most associated with Descartes, holds that mind and body are two fundamentally distinct substances. The mind is non-extended and thinking (res cogitans), while the body is extended and non-thinking (res extensa). Descartes’s conceivability argument claims that because he can clearly and distinctly conceive of himself existing without a body, mind and body must be distinct. The indivisibility argument adds that the body is divisible but the mind is not. The main problem is the interaction problem: how can an immaterial mind causally interact with a material body if they share no properties in common? Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia famously pressed this objection.

Physicalism responds that everything is physical. Type identity theory claims mental states are identical to brain states (e.g., pain = C-fibre firing). This view faces the issue of multiple realizability: the same mental state could be realised by different physical states across species or artificial systems. Eliminative materialism goes further, arguing that folk psychological concepts like ‘belief’ and ‘desire’ are fundamentally flawed and will eventually be eliminated by a matured neuroscience.

10. Functionalism and Personal Identity |

Functionalism defines mental states not by their physical constitution but by their causal roles — the inputs, outputs, and relations to other mental states. Putnam’s machine functionalism likens the mind to a Turing machine, where mental states are software running on various hardware. This elegantly accommodates multiple realizability. Critics argue that functionalism cannot account for qualia, the subjective ‘what it is like’ of experience. Jackson’s knowledge argument (Mary the colour scientist) and Nagel’s ‘what is it like to be a bat?’ highlight that objective functional descriptions leave out the first-person qualitative character.

The problem of personal identity asks what makes a person at time t2 the same person as a person at time t1. Locke proposed the psychological continuity theory, anchored in memory and consciousness. A person is identical to an earlier self if they share consciousness and can extend their awareness backwards. Reid objected that forgetfulness leads to contradictions (the brave officer paradox). The bodily continuity criterion maintains that personal identity depends on the continuity of the body or brain. Animalism identifies a person with the living human animal; our persistence conditions are essentially biological. More recent narrative theories suggest that a person’s identity is constituted by the story they weave about their life.
