📚 IGCSE CCEA Geography: Essay Writing Framework and Model Answers | IGCSE CCEA

In IGCSE CCEA Geography, essay-style questions carry significant weight and require students to construct coherent, evidence-based arguments. Mastering a clear writing framework, applying detailed case study knowledge, and precisely interpreting command words are essential for achieving top marks. This guide provides a structured approach along with model answers to help you excel in your examinations.

1. Understanding the Essay Requirements |

CCEA IGCSE Geography essays typically range from 6 to 12 marks. Each question includes a command word that dictates the style of response you need to provide, such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’ or ‘discuss’. You must demonstrate factual knowledge, conceptual understanding and the ability to apply geographical skills to specific contexts. Always check how many marks are allocated, as this indicates the depth and number of points expected.

CCEA IGCSE

Reading the question carefully is the very first step. Identify the core geographical theme, the scale (local, regional, global) and any named location required. Underline keywords so that every part of the question is addressed. A common mistake is to write everything you know about a topic without tailoring it to the exact command word.

2. Basic Essay Structure: Introduction, Body, Conclusion |

An effective essay has three clearly distinguishable parts. The introduction should define key terms from the question and briefly outline the direction of your argument. For a 12-mark ‘evaluate’ question, the introduction might state the two sides you will consider and hint at your final judgement.

The body consists of two to three well-developed paragraphs, each following a PEEL format (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link). Use geographical terminology throughout and always anchor your points in real-world examples. The conclusion should summarise your main arguments without introducing new material, and for evaluative questions, clearly state your overall judgement with justification.

3. PEEL Paragraph Structure | PEEL

PEEL is the backbone of high-scoring geography essays. It ensures every paragraph has a clear purpose and stays relevant. The four components work together to build a convincing chain of reasoning.

  • Point – State the main idea of the paragraph in one sentence, directly addressing the question.
  • Evidence – Provide specific factual data, place names, dates or statistics from your case studies.
  • Explanation – Develop the point by explaining how and why the evidence supports your argument. Show geographical processes.
  • Link – Connect the paragraph back to the question or forward to the next point, showing progression.

For example, in a paragraph about the impacts of deforestation, Point: ‘Deforestation in the Amazon leads to severe soil erosion.’ Evidence: ‘In Rondônia, Brazil, up to 30 tonnes of soil per hectare are lost annually after clearance.’ Explanation: ‘The removal of tree roots that bind the soil, combined with heavy tropical rainfall, washes away the fertile top layer, reducing land productivity.’ Link: ‘This environmental degradation then triggers a chain of socio-economic challenges for local communities.’

4. Using Case Studies and Specific Details |

Case studies are non-negotiable in CCEA Geography essays. A generic answer without named locations or statistics will rarely progress beyond the middle mark bands. For each major topic, you should have at least one detailed case study from a contrasting part of the world, including specific figures and dates.

The table below illustrates how to transform vague statements into high-value, case-study-rich sentences. Always aim to show the examiner a mental map and a sense of place.

Weak Statement (弱陈述) Strong, Case-Study-Based Statement (基于案例研究的强陈述)
Coastal erosion is a problem in the UK. The Holderness Coast in eastern England retreats at an average rate of 2 metres per year, with the village of Mappleton losing over 50 metres of land since 1850.
Migration has positive impacts on host countries. Between 2021 and 2022, net international migration to the UK was over 500,000; migrants filled critical labour shortages in the NHS, where 15% of staff are non-British nationals.
Volcanoes cause damage. The 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland, disrupted air travel across Europe for six days, costing the airline industry an estimated £130 million per day.

5. Addressing Command Words |

Every essay question hinges on its command word. Misinterpreting ‘explain’ as ‘describe’ is a common and costly error. The table below summarises the key command words used by CCEA and what each demands from your writing.

Command Word (指令词) What You Must Do (你必须做的)
Describe (描述) Give a factual account of features or patterns without providing reasons. Paint a picture with data.
Explain (解释) Give reasons why something occurs, focusing on processes and causation. Use linking words like ‘because’, ‘due to’, ‘therefore’.
Compare (比较) Identify similarities and differences. Use comparative phrases and ideally make a table-like mental comparison in your text.
Evaluate / Assess (评估) Make a judgement about the value, success or importance of something. Weigh both sides, then conclude with a clear, justified opinion.
Discuss (讨论) Present arguments for and against, or the advantages and disadvantages, before reaching a reasoned conclusion.

For ‘evaluate’ and ‘discuss’ questions, it is critical to include a final paragraph that weighs the evidence and states a conclusion, such as ‘Overall, hard engineering offers immediate protection but is financially unsustainable for many developing countries, so soft engineering combined with community relocation may be the most equitable long-term strategy.’ Without this concluding judgement, you cannot access the highest marks.

6. Model Answer: Waterfall Formation |

Question: ‘Explain the formation of a waterfall.’ (6 marks)

A waterfall typically forms where a band of hard, resistant rock, such as granite, lies over a layer of softer rock, like shale. The softer rock is eroded more quickly by hydraulic action and abrasion from the river’s load. This differential erosion creates a steep drop in the river’s long profile.

As the water cascades over the resistant cap rock, the soft rock below is continually undercut, forming a plunge pool at the base. Swirling pebbles in the plunge pool drill into the riverbed, deepening it further. Over time, the overhanging hard rock becomes unsupported and collapses into the plunge pool. This process repeats, causing the waterfall to retreat upstream, leaving behind a steep-sided gorge, such as the gorge below Niagara Falls.

7. Model Answer: Evaluating Coastal Management |

Question: ‘Evaluate the effectiveness of hard and soft engineering strategies in managing coastal erosion. Use named examples.’ (12 marks)

Hard engineering strategies, such as sea walls and groynes, provide immediate and highly visible protection against coastal erosion. For instance, the sea wall at Hornsea on the Holderness Coast, completed in the 1950s, has successfully halted erosion at the town itself, safeguarding over 8,000 properties and vital infrastructure. However, these structures are extremely expensive: the Hornsea sea wall cost over £5 million to build and requires ongoing maintenance. Furthermore, groynes trap sediment on one side but starve beaches further down-drift, accelerating erosion elsewhere—a problem seen at Mappleton, where groynes built in 1991 increased erosion rates south of the village.

In contrast, soft engineering approaches, such as beach nourishment and managed retreat, work with natural processes and are often more sustainable and less expensive upfront. The Medmerry managed realignment scheme in West Sussex created a new 183-hectare intertidal habitat, providing flood protection to over 300 homes without the use of concrete barriers. However, soft engineering can be less predictable during extreme storm events, and beach nourishment requires regular, costly replenishment every few years, as seen at Bournemouth where sand is replenished annually at a cost of around £2.7 million. Ultimately, the most effective coastal management often combines both strategies, tailored to the local economic and environmental context, with a clear understanding that no solution is permanent.

8. Model Answer: Discussing Migration Impacts |

Question: ‘Discuss the impacts of international migration on both source and host countries. Refer to named examples.’ (10 marks)

International migration brings a complex mix of positive and negative impacts. For host countries, a significant benefit is the filling of labour shortages and demographic gaps. In Japan, where the population is ageing rapidly, the government has recently expanded its foreign worker programme to sustain industries such as construction and nursing. Migrants also contribute to cultural diversity and economic growth; in London, migrant entrepreneurs founded one in seven new businesses in 2022.

Nevertheless, rapid influxes can strain public services such as housing and healthcare. In Germany, the arrival of over one million asylum seekers in 2015 led to increased pressure on rental markets in cities like Berlin and created political tensions. For source countries, emigration can alleviate unemployment and generate vital remittances. The Philippines receives over US$35 billion annually in remittances, which account for nearly 10% of its GDP and support millions of families. On the downside, source countries often suffer ‘brain drain’: Nigeria loses thousands of trained doctors each year to the UK and USA, weakening its own healthcare system. Overall, the impacts are highly contextual and depend on the scale of migration and the policies adopted by the governments involved.

9. Common Mistakes and Improvement Tips |

One of the most frequent errors is writing a purely descriptive answer when the command word demands explanation or evaluation. Always check the command word before you begin and structure your essay accordingly. Another common pitfall is the ‘shopping list’ approach, where candidates list several case studies without developing any of them. Depth is valued over breadth; one fully explained case study per paragraph is far more effective than mentioning three in passing.

You should also avoid vague statements like ‘pollution is bad’. Instead, specify the pollutant, its source and its measured impact, for example, ‘Eutrophication in the Baltic Sea, caused by agricultural nitrate runoff from Poland and Sweden, has created dead zones covering 70,000 km².’ Besides, always leave two minutes to proofread your conclusion: a rushed, unsupported final judgement can undermine an otherwise strong essay.

10. Time Management and Exam Strategy |

Effective time allocation is as important as geographical knowledge. As a general rule, spend one minute per mark plus two minutes for planning and checking. For a 12-mark essay, you should aim to spend around 14–15 minutes: 2 minutes to plan, 11 minutes to write, and 1–2 minutes to review.

During the planning phase, jot down your main points, case study names and key statistics on the question paper. This roadmap will keep you focused and prevent you from going off topic. If you find yourself running out of time, prioritise writing a concise conclusion with a clear judgement, as this is often where high marks are secured. Finally, familiarise yourself with the command word table and PEEL structure so thoroughly that they become automatic, freeing your mind to think geographically under pressure.
