1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is the love of wisdom, involving critical thinking about fundamental questions concerning existence, knowledge, values, reason, and mind. It uses logical argument rather than empirical investigation alone.

Philosophical method includes conceptual analysis, thought experiments, and evaluation of arguments for validity and soundness.

A valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true; a sound argument is valid with all true premises.

2. Epistemology: The Theory of Knowledge |

Epistemology asks: What is knowledge? The traditional definition is justified true belief (JTB). You know something if you believe it, it is true, and you have justification.

Gettier cases challenge JTB by showing situations where someone has a justified true belief but still seems not to know (e.g., looking at a stopped clock that happens to show the correct time).

Sources of knowledge include perception, reason, introspection, memory, and testimony. Rationalism says reason is primary; empiricism says sensory experience is the source.

3. The Design Argument for God’s Existence |

The design argument (teleological argument) proposes that the universe shows evidence of design, and a designer must be God. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy: if you find a watch, its complexity implies a watchmaker; similarly, the complexity of the universe implies a divine designer.

Hume criticised the argument: the universe may be more like a living organism than a machine; the designer might not be the Christian God; and there could be many designers.

Modern versions invoke the fine-tuning of physical constants, but critics argue the multiverse hypothesis explains apparent design without God.

4. The Cosmological Argument |

The cosmological argument asserts that everything that exists has a cause; the universe exists, so it must have a first cause. Aquinas’ First Way argues for an unmoved mover; the Kalam version argues that the universe began to exist and therefore needs a cause.

Objections include: Why must the first cause be God? Could the universe be an infinite regress? And Hume’s point that we cannot apply causation beyond our experience to the universe as a whole.

5. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil challenges the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God. If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why does evil exist? The logical problem claims it is contradictory; the evidential problem points to the sheer amount and distribution of suffering.

Responses (theodicies) include the free will defence: God gave humans free will, which is a greater good, but it allows moral evil. Another is soul-making (Irenaeus/Hick): suffering develops virtues.

Critics reply that free will does not explain natural evil, and the amount of suffering seems excessive for soul-making.

6. Religious Experience |

Religious experiences are personal encounters with the divine. William James identified four characteristics: ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and passivity. Mystical experiences often involve a sense of unity with the ultimate reality.

The argument from religious experience claims that these experiences are perceptions of a divine reality, just as sensory experiences are perceptions of the physical world. Critics use the principle of credulity (Swinburne) versus the principle of testimony (Hume’s objection to miracles).

Alternatively, religious experiences may be explained psychologically (Freud: projection of the father figure) or neurologically (temporal lobe activation).

7. The Nature of the Mind: Dualism vs. Materialism | 心灵的本质:二元论 vs. 唯物主义

Dualism holds that the mind and body are distinct substances. Descartes argued that because he can doubt the existence of his body but not his mind, they must be separate. The interaction problem asks how an immaterial mind can move a physical body.

Materialism claims that mental states are identical to brain states. Identity theory says sensations are exactly brain processes; eliminative materialism says folk psychology concepts like ‘belief’ will be replaced by neuroscience.

Functionalism defines mental states by causal roles, not physical makeup, allowing multiple realizability (e.g., silicon chips could have minds).

8. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory: the right action is the one that maximises utility (happiness, pleasure). Jeremy Bentham’s hedonic calculus measured pleasure by intensity, duration, certainty, etc.

John Stuart Mill distinguished higher and lower pleasures, arguing intellectual pleasures are superior. Act utilitarianism applies the principle to individual acts; rule utilitarianism applies it to general rules.

Objections: it ignores justice and rights (e.g., punishing an innocent to please a mob), and it is impractical to calculate all consequences.

9. Ethical Theories: Kantian Ethics |

Kant’s deontological ethics bases morality on duty and the categorical imperative, not consequences. Act only according to that maxim which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.

The formula of humanity commands that we treat persons never merely as a means but always also as an end. This grounds human dignity and rights.

Challenges include conflict of duties (e.g., lying to save a life) and the accusation that Kant’s ethics is too rigid and ignores emotions.

10. Free Will and Determinism |

Determinism states that all events are caused by prior events and natural laws, so human actions are determined. Hard determinism concludes free will is an illusion. Libertarianism asserts free will is real and incompatible with determinism.

Compatibilism (soft determinism) argues free will is compatible with determinism: freedom is doing what you want without coercion, even if your wants are determined. Hume and later Frankfurt are key proponents.

Consequences for moral responsibility: if hard determinism is true, can we blame or praise? Libertarianism faces the problem of how a free act is not just random. Compatibilism may redefine free will too weakly.

11. Life after Death and the Soul |

Belief in life after death can take the form of resurrection (body and soul reunited), reincarnation (soul reborn in a new body), or the immortality of the soul (Platonic view). Dualistic arguments support the soul’s survival, while materialism suggests death is the end of consciousness.

The problem of personal identity after death: what makes me the same person if my body decays or my memories are altered? Locke’s memory theory and the body-soul relationship are key debates.

12. The Meaning of Life | 生命的意义

Philosophical approaches to life’s meaning include theistic meaning (God’s plan), humanistic meaning (creating our own purpose), and nihilism (no objective meaning). Existentialists like Sartre argued we are condemned to be free and must create meaning.

Questions about a meaningful life often connect to happiness, virtue, and relationships. Critics of objective meaning claim it is a non-cognitive concept, merely an expression of attitude.
