Literary Analysis Quick Reference Handbook | 文学分析速查手册

📚 Literary Analysis Quick Reference Handbook | 文学分析速查手册

This handbook is designed as a quick revision aid for Year 12 students preparing for the CAIE AS English Literature examination. It collates the core ‘formulae’ of literary analysis – the essential terms, concepts, and frameworks you need to apply when reading poetry, prose, and drama. Think of each entry as a theorem you can draw upon to construct a precise, well-supported argument. Master these, and your analytical writing will gain clarity, depth, and academic rigour.

本手册是为准备CAIE AS英语文学考试的Year 12学生设计的快速复习工具。它汇集了文学分析的核心“公式”——你在阅读诗歌、散文和戏剧时必须运用的关键术语、概念和框架。将每个条目视作一个定理,你可以借助它们构建精确、论证充分的观点。掌握这些内容,你的分析性写作将获得清晰度、深度和学术严谨性。

1. Poetic Metre & Scansion | 诗歌韵律与格律分析

Metre is the rhythmic pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry. Scansion is the process of marking these stresses to identify the metre. The basic unit is the foot. Common feet include the iamb (unstressed + stressed, as in ‘deceive’), the trochee (stressed + unstressed, as in ‘tiger’), the anapest (two unstressed + stressed, as in ‘intervene’), and the dactyl (stressed + two unstressed, as in ‘happily’).

格律是诗行中重读音节与非重读音节的有规律排列。格律分析就是标记这些重音以识别格律的过程。基本单位是音步。常见音步包括抑扬格(非重读+重读,如“deceive”)、扬抑格(重读+非重读,如“tiger”)、抑抑扬格(两个非重读+重读,如“intervene”)和扬抑抑格(重读+两个非重读,如“happily”)。

The number of feet per line gives the metre name: iambic pentameter (five feet) is the most celebrated, used extensively by Shakespeare. A line of iambic pentameter often mirrors natural English speech. Recognising a shift from the established metre, such as a trochaic substitution, often signals a change in tone or emphasis.

每行的音步数量决定格律名称:抑扬格五音步(五个音步)最为著名,被莎士比亚广泛使用。抑扬格五音步诗行常与英语自然语音相吻合。识别出既定格律的变化,例如扬抑格替代,通常标志着语气或重心的转变。

Metre / 格律 Pattern / 模式 Example / 示例
Iambic Pentameter u / | u / | u / | u / | u / Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Trochaic Tetrameter / u | / u | / u | / u Tyger Tyger, burning bright
Anapestic Trimeter u u / | u u / | u u / And the sound of a voice that is still

When you scan a poem, always read it aloud. Mark the stressed syllables with a slash (/) and unstressed with a breve (u). Identify the dominant metre, then note any significant deviations. A spondee (/ /) in a line of iambs creates a heavy, emphatic pause.

分析格律时,一定要大声朗读。用斜线(/)标记重读音节,用短音符(u)标记非重读音节。找出主导格律,然后记录任何重要的偏离。在抑扬格诗行中加入扬扬格(/ /)会制造沉重、强调性的停顿。

2. Rhyme, Rhyme Scheme & Sound Devices | 押韵、韵式与声音手法

End rhyme occurs at the end of lines; internal rhyme occurs within a line. A rhyme scheme is denoted by lowercase letters (e.g., ABAB CDCD EFEF GG for a Shakespearean sonnet). Full rhyme (perfect rhyme) has identical vowel and consonant sounds from the stressed syllable onward (e.g., ‘moon’ / ‘June’). Half-rhyme (or slant rhyme) repeats only the final consonant sounds (e.g., ‘moon’ / ‘mine’). Eye-rhyme looks similar but sounds different (e.g., ‘through’ / ‘rough’).

尾韵出现在诗行末尾;中间韵出现在一行内部。韵式用小写字母标记(例如,莎士比亚十四行诗的韵式为ABAB CDCD EFEF GG)。全韵(完美韵)从重读音节开始的元音和辅音完全相同(如’moon’ / ‘June’)。半韵(或斜韵)只重复最后的辅音(如’moon’ / ‘mine’)。视觉韵看起来相似但发音不同(如’through’ / ‘rough’)。

Sound devices enhance meaning. Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds (‘the fair breeze blew’). Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within words (‘the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain’). Consonance is the repetition of consonant sounds anywhere in words (‘pitter-patter’). Onomatopoeia uses words whose sounds imitate their sense (‘buzz’, ‘hiss’).

声音手法能增强意义。头韵是词首辅音的重复(’the fair breeze blew’)。腹韵是词内元音的重复(’the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain’)。尾韵是词内任何位置辅音的重复(’pitter-patter’)。拟声词用声音模仿其含义(’buzz’, ‘hiss’)。

Couplet: two consecutive rhyming lines. Tercet: three lines, often rhyming AAA or ABA. Quatrain: four lines. Volta: a turn or shift in argument or mood, often signalled by words like ‘But’ or ‘Yet’, appearing around line 9 in a Petrarchan sonnet or before the final couplet in a Shakespearean sonnet.

对句:两行连续押韵的诗行。三行诗节:三行诗,常押AAA或ABA韵。四行诗节:四行诗。转折:论点或情绪上的转变,常由“但是”或“然而”等词标记,在彼得拉克体十四行诗中大约出现在第9行,莎士比亚体则出现在末尾对句之前。

3. Figurative Language & Imagery | 比喻语言与意象

Simile: an explicit comparison using ‘like’ or ‘as’ (‘My love is like a red, red rose’). Metaphor: an implicit comparison that states one thing is another (‘All the world’s a stage’). An extended metaphor (conceit) develops over several lines or the entire poem. Personification gives human qualities to inanimate objects or abstractions (‘Death, be not proud’).

明喻:用“像”或“如”进行的显性比较(“我的爱人像一朵红红的玫瑰”)。暗喻:将一个事物说成是另一个事物的隐性比较(“全世界是个舞台”)。扩展暗喻(奇喻)在数行或整首诗中展开。拟人将人的品质赋予无生命物体或抽象概念(“死亡,你别骄傲”)。

Imagery refers to language that appeals to the senses. Visual imagery (sight) is most common, but also look for auditory (sound), tactile (touch), olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), and kinaesthetic (movement) imagery. A writer uses imagery to create a vivid mental picture and to evoke specific emotions. Synaesthesia blends different senses (‘loud perfume’).

意象指的是唤起感官的语言。视觉意象(视觉)最常见,但也要留意听觉(声音)、触觉(触感)、嗅觉(气味)、味觉(味道)和动觉(运动)意象。作者运用意象创造生动的心理画面并唤起特定情感。通感混合不同感官(“响亮的香水”)。

Symbolism: an object, person, or event that represents an abstract idea beyond its literal meaning (the conch in Lord of the Flies symbolises order and civilisation). Motif: a recurring element (image, idea, word) that contributes to the development of a theme. Pathetic fallacy: attributing human emotions to nature, often to reflect a character’s inner state (‘the sullen wind’).

象征主义:一个物体、人物或事件,在字面意义之外代表一个抽象概念(《蝇王》中的海螺象征秩序与文明)。母题:一个反复出现的元素(意象、观念、词语),有助于主题的展开。情感谬误:将人类情感赋予自然,常反映角色的内心状态(“阴沉的风”)。

4. Narrative Perspective & Voice | 叙述视角与声音

First-person narrator: the story is told by an ‘I’ who is a character within the story. This narrator may be reliable or unreliable. Reliability is judged by the narrator’s consistency, knowledge, and the values implied by the text. An unreliable narrator (e.g., Montresor in ‘The Cask of Amontillado’) invites the reader to interpret against their statements.

第一人称叙述者:故事由故事内的某个“我”来讲述。这个叙述者可能是可靠的,也可能是不可靠的。可靠性依据叙述者的一致性、知识以及文本隐含的价值观来判断。不可靠的叙述者(如《一桶阿蒙蒂亚度酒》中的蒙特雷索尔)邀请读者去从其陈述中读出相反的含义。

Third-person limited narrator: the story is told from the outside, but the reader has access to the thoughts and feelings of only one character (focaliser). Third-person omniscient narrator: all-knowing, can enter the minds of any character and provide commentary. Stream of consciousness: a technique that presents the continuous, often chaotic flow of a character’s thoughts, feelings, and memories.

第三人称有限叙述者:故事从外部讲述,但读者只能了解到一个角色(聚焦者)的思想和情感。第三人称全知叙述者:无所不知,能进入任何角色的内心并提供评论。意识流:一种呈现角色思想、情感和记忆的连续、常混乱流动的技巧。

Tone is the attitude of the writer or speaker towards the subject and the audience, conveyed through diction, syntax, and imagery. Irony: a contrast between appearance and reality. Verbal irony says one thing but means another. Situational irony involves an outcome that contradicts expectations. Dramatic irony occurs when the audience knows something the characters do not.

语气是作者或说话者通过措辞、句法和意象传达的对主题和读者的态度。反讽:表象与现实的对比。言语反讽说一套意指另一套。情境反讽涉及与预期相矛盾的结果。戏剧性反讽发生在观众知道而角色不知道某些事情时。

5. Characterisation | 人物塑造

Direct characterisation tells the reader explicitly about a character’s personality (e.g., ‘He was a stingy, bitter man’). Indirect characterisation reveals character through actions, speech, thoughts, appearance, and what other characters say about them (the S.T.E.A.L. method: Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, Looks).

直接人物塑造明确告诉读者角色的性格(如“他是个吝啬、刻薄的男人”)。间接人物塑造通过行动、言语、思想、外貌以及其他角色对他的评价来揭示角色(S.T.E.A.L.法:言语、思想、对他人的影响、行动、外表)。

Round characters are complex and undergo development; they often have internal conflicts. Flat characters are one-dimensional and defined by a single trait. A stock character is a stereotypical figure (e.g., the mad scientist). A foil is a character who contrasts with the protagonist to highlight particular qualities of the main character (e.g., Laertes as foil to Hamlet).

圆形人物复杂且经历发展;他们常有内心冲突。扁平人物是单维度的,由单一特质定义。类型化人物是刻板形象(如疯狂科学家)。陪衬人物是与主角形成对比以突出主角特定品质的角色(如雷欧提斯作为哈姆雷特的陪衬)。

When writing about character, avoid treating them as real people. Instead, discuss how the writer constructs the character to serve thematic purposes or to critique societal norms. Consider whether the character is static (unchanging) or dynamic (transforming), and what their arc reveals.

在分析人物时,避免将其当作真人。而应讨论作者如何构建角色以服务于主题目的或批判社会规范。考虑角色是静态的(不变)还是动态的(变化),以及其发展轨迹揭示了什么。

6. Setting & Atmosphere | 场景与氛围

Setting encompasses the time, place, and social environment in which the narrative unfolds. It can be integral, shaping characters and plot, or backdrop, merely decorative. Temporal setting includes historical period, time of day, and season. Geographic setting includes country, region, landscape, and specific buildings. Social setting includes the political, cultural, and economic milieu.

场景包含叙事展开的时间、地点和社会环境。它可以是决定性的,塑造角色和情节;也可以是背景性的,仅作装饰。时间场景包括历史时期、时刻和季节。地理场景包括国家、区域、景观和具体建筑。社会场景包括政治、文化和经济环境。

Atmosphere is the emotional mood created by the setting. A Gothic novel uses decrepit castles, darkness, and stormy weather to create an atmosphere of dread and mystery. Pathetic fallacy (see Section 3) directly links natural environment to character emotion. A shift in setting often signals a shift in theme or character development. For instance, a move from the city to the countryside may symbolise a return to innocence.

氛围是由场景创造的情感情绪。哥特小说利用破败的城堡、黑暗和暴风雨天气营造恐惧和神秘的氛围。情感谬误(见第3节)直接将自然环境与角色情感联系起来。场景的转换常标志着主题或人物发展的转变。例如,从城市迁往乡村可能象征着回归纯真。

7. Structure & Form | 结构与形式

Form refers to the overall shape or genre of a text: a sonnet, a dramatic monologue, a stream-of-consciousness novel, a tragedy. Structure is the way the content is organised: stanza divisions, acts and scenes, chapters, use of flashbacks or flash-forwards, and pacing. Analyse why the writer chose this particular structure for this content.

形式指文本的整体形状或体裁:一首十四行诗、一段戏剧独白、一部意识流小说、一出悲剧。结构是内容组织的方式:诗节划分、幕和场、章节、倒叙或预叙的使用,以及节奏。分析作者为何为这个内容选择这种特定结构。

Linear narrative: events told in chronological order. Non-linear narrative disrupts chronology, often to create mystery or to reveal layers of meaning (e.g., The God of Small Things). Frame narrative: a story within a story (e.g., Wuthering Heights). Enjambment: a sentence or clause runs over from one line of poetry to the next without terminal punctuation, creating a sense of urgency or flow. End-stopped lines have punctuation at the end, creating a pause.

线性叙事:事件按时间顺序讲述。非线性叙事打乱时间顺序,通常是为了制造神秘或揭示层次意义(如《微物之神》)。框架叙事:故事中的故事(如《呼啸山庄》)。跨行连续:一个句子或从句从一行诗延续到下一行而无结尾标点,创造出紧迫感或流畅感。收尾诗行行末有标点,制造停顿。

Stanza forms: couplet (2 lines), tercet (3), quatrain (4), sestet (6), octave (8). A sonnet has 14 lines: the Petrarchan divides into an octave (ABBAABBA) and a sestet (CDECDE or CDCDCD); the Shakespearean divides into three quatrains and a couplet (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG). Free verse has no regular metre or rhyme scheme.

诗节形式:对句(2行)、三行诗节(3行)、四行诗节(4行)、六行诗节(6行)、八行诗节(8行)。十四行诗有14行:彼得拉克体分为八行诗节(ABBAABBA)和六行诗节(CDECDE或CDCDCD);莎士比亚体分为三个四行诗节和一个对句(ABAB CDCD EFEF GG)。自由诗无规律格律或韵式。

8. Drama Elements | 戏剧元素

Dialogue: the spoken exchanges between characters. Monologue: an extended speech by one character addressed to others on stage. Soliloquy: a speech in which a character, alone on stage, reveals inner thoughts and feelings directly to the audience (e.g., Hamlet’s ‘To be, or not to be’). Aside: a brief remark directed to the audience, unheard by other characters on stage.

对话:角色之间的口头交流。独白:一个角色对舞台上其他人所作的较长发言。戏剧独白(独自):角色独自在舞台上直接向观众透露内心想法和感受的发言(如哈姆雷特的“生存还是毁灭”)。旁白:对观众作的简短评论,舞台上其他角色听不到。

Stage directions: instructions in a play script about setting, movement, lighting, and delivery of lines. They are crucial for understanding subtext and the playwright’s intentions. In CAIE exam essays, refer to them carefully. The use of props, costume, and blocking (positioning of actors) all contribute to meaning. For example, a character always seated while others stand may signal powerlessness.

舞台指示:剧本中关于场景、动作、灯光和台词传达的指示。它们对于理解潜台词和剧作家的意图至关重要。在CAIE考试论文中,要仔细引用它们。道具、服装和舞台调度(演员的定位)都贡献意义。例如,一个角色总坐着而其他人站着,可能意味着无权势。

Dramatic structure: often follows Freytag’s pyramid: exposition (introduction), rising action, climax (turning point), falling action, denouement (resolution). In tragedy, hamartia (the tragic flaw or error) leads to peripeteia (reversal of fortune) and anagnorisis (moment of recognition), culminating in catharsis (purging of pity and fear).

戏剧结构:常遵循弗赖塔格金字塔:开端(介绍)、上升行动、高潮(转折点)、下降行动、结局(解决)。在悲剧中,悲剧缺陷或过失(hamartia)导致命运逆转(peripeteia)和醒悟时刻(anagnorisis),最终实现情感净化(catharsis)——怜悯与恐惧的宣泄。

9. Critical Theories Overview | 批评理论概要

While AS Level does not require deep theoretical analysis, awareness of broad theoretical lenses can enrich your reading. Marxist criticism examines class conflict, ideology, and economic power structures in a text. Feminist criticism analyses gender roles, patriarchal power, and the representation of women. Psychoanalytic criticism (inspired by Freud) focuses on unconscious desires, repression, and the id/ego/superego.

虽然AS Level不要求深入的理论分析,但对广泛理论视角的了解能丰富你的阅读。马克思主义批评审视文本中的阶级斗争、意识形态和经济权力结构。女性主义批评分析性别角色、父权权力和女性表征。精神分析批评(受弗洛伊德启发)聚焦无意识欲望、压抑以及本我/自我/超我。

Postcolonial criticism investigates the effects of colonialism on cultures and societies, looking at issues of otherness, hybridity, and voice. Ecocriticism explores the relationship between literature and the physical environment, often discussing nature writing and the anthropocene. You can borrow relevant terminology (e.g., ‘the gaze’, ‘subaltern’) sparingly to show intellectual depth, but anchor it firmly in textual evidence.

后殖民批评研究殖民主义对文化和社会的影响,探讨他者性、混杂性和声音等问题。生态批评探索文学与自然环境的关系,常讨论自然书写和人类世。你可以谨慎借用相关术语(如“凝视”、“底层人”)来展示知识深度,但必须牢固结合文本证据。

10. Common Essay Terms & Tasks | 常见论文术语与任务

CAIE questions often use specific command words. ‘Discuss’ requires you to explore multiple aspects of a topic, presenting a balanced argument with evidence. ‘How does the writer…’ asks you to analyse the techniques used to create an effect. ‘Compare’ demands you find both similarities and differences. ‘To what extent’ invites you to agree or disagree partially, weighing up arguments before reaching a nuanced conclusion.

CAIE试题常使用特定指令词。“讨论”要求你探索主题的多个方面,提出基于证据的均衡论点。“作者如何……”要求你分析创造某种效果所使用的技巧。“比较”要求你找出相似点和不同点。“在何种程度上”邀请你部分同意或不同意,在得出细致结论前权衡各方论点。

Always structure your essay around an argument (thesis). Use the PEEL paragraph: Point, Evidence (quotation or specific reference), Explanation (analysis of language and effect), Link (back to the question and forward to the next point). Avoid retelling the plot; focus on “the how”. A good thesis statement is arguable, specific, and addresses the question directly.

始终围绕一个论点(主题)构建你的文章。使用PEEL段落:论点、证据(引文或具体引用)、解释(分析语言和效果)、连接(回扣问题并过渡到下一点)。避免复述情节;专注于“如何”。一个好的主题陈述是具争议性、具体的,并直接回应问题。

11. Glossary of Key Terms A–Z | 关键术语表 A–Z

Allusion: an indirect reference to another text, event, or figure, expecting the reader to make the connection. Caesura: a strong pause within a line of poetry, often marked by punctuation, creating a jarring or reflective effect. Hyperbole: deliberate exaggeration for emphasis (‘I’ve told you a million times’). Litotes: understatement using double negatives (‘not a bad idea’). Parallelism: the use of similar grammatical structures to emphasise a connection between ideas.

典故:间接引用另一文本、事件或人物,期待读者建立联系。行内停顿:诗行中的强停顿,常由标点标记,制造突兀或引人深思的效果。夸张:为强调而蓄意夸大(“我告诉过你一百万遍了”)。含蓄:用双重否定表达的轻描淡写(“不失为一个好主意”)。平行结构:使用相似的语法结构来强调思想间的联系。

Syntax: the arrangement of words and phrases. A periodic sentence withholds the main clause until the end, building suspense. A cumulative (loose) sentence presents the main clause first, then adds details. Semantic field: a group of words related in meaning (e.g., words of warfare: ‘battle’, ‘trench’, ‘shell-shock’) that contribute to a specific theme. Juxtaposition places two ideas side by side to highlight contrast.

句法:词语和短语的安排。圆周句将主句推迟到句末,制造悬念。累积句(松散句)先提出主句,然后添加细节。语义场:一组意义相关的词语(如战争词语:“战斗”、“战壕”、“炮弹休克”),有助于表达特定主题。并置将两个想法并排放置以突出对比。

12. Exam Strategies & Final Reminders | 考试策略与最后提醒

Time management: allocate time proportional to marks. For Paper 1 (Drama and Poetry), plan 5–10 minutes per essay. Read the extract carefully, annotating key quotations. Integrate quotations seamlessly: use embedding (‘Othello’s self-description as “one not easily jealous” reveals his blindness’) rather than floating quotes. Quality of analysis matters more than quantity of examples.

时间管理:按分比例分配时间。对试卷一(戏剧与诗歌),每篇论文规划5-10分钟。仔细阅读选段,标记关键引文。无缝融合引文:使用嵌入式(“奥赛罗自称‘不轻易嫉妒’揭示了他的盲目”)而非漂浮式引文。分析的质量比例子的数量更重要。

In the unseen poetry question, trust your skills. Begin by asking: Who is speaking? What is the tone? What striking images or sound devices are used? Mention form and structure. Always conclude with a personal, critical response: how effectively does the poem communicate its ideas? For set texts, demonstrate knowledge of the whole work, not just the extract.

在未见过的诗歌题中,相信你的技能。开始时问:谁在说话?语气如何?使用了哪些引人注目的意象或声音手法?提到形式和结构。始终以个人的、批评性的回应作结:这首诗在传达其思想方面有多有效?对于规定文本,展示对整部作品的了解,而不仅限于选段。

Finally, avoid pre-prepared responses. Let the text speak to you. Your genuine, well-evidenced and articulate voice is your strongest asset. This handbook provides the “formulae”, but your interpretation remains the singular, vital element.

最后,避免准备预设的答案。让文本向你诉说。你真实、证据充分且清晰的表达是你最宝贵的资产。本手册提供了“公式”,但你的解读仍是独一无二、至关重要的元素。
