1. Overview of the Mock Exam |

This mock exam replicates the initial 20-hour preparatory period for Component 2: Externally Set Assignment. The paper presents a broad theme – ‘Barriers and Connections’ – and is divided into three sections. Section A requires an observational drawing with extended annotation. Section B asks you to compare the work of two practitioners and reflect on their relevance to the theme. Section C demands a series of personal idea developments, culminating in a final piece proposal. Each section is marked out of 12, mirroring the holistic AO weighting used in real IGCSE assessment.

You are expected to work through the paper with the same discipline as in the actual examination: reading the theme carefully, planning responses, researching artists intelligently, and documenting every step of your creative journey. The mock is not simply a test of technical ability – it assesses your capacity to think like an artist, linking visual decisions to wider contexts.

2. Understanding the Assessment Objectives |

All IGCSE Edexcel Art & Design marks are distributed across four Assessment Objectives. AO1 (Develop) addresses your ability to investigate sources and demonstrate critical understanding. AO2 (Refine) examines how you experiment with media, materials, techniques and processes, and how you review and refine your work. AO3 (Record) focuses on the quality of your observations, sketches, annotations and written insights. AO4 (Present) assesses the personal, meaningful response you produce and how well it realises your intentions while making connections with others’ work.

The mock paper is intentionally weighted so that Section A chiefly addresses AO3, Section B addresses AO1, and Section C addresses AO2 and AO4. However, the boundaries are porous: strong candidates let the AOs blend together, showing, for example, how a drawing (AO3) can simultaneously refine a technique (AO2) and feed into a deeper conceptual development (AO1). The table below summarises the formal weighting you should keep in mind.

Assessment Objective Core Requirement (English) 核心要求 (中文) Weight in Mock
AO1 Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding
AO2 Refine work by experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes
AO3 Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions
AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions

3. Section A: Analytical Drawing & Annotation | 第A部分:分析性绘画与注释

The first task states: ‘Choose a man-made barrier – such as a fence, a wall, a cage or a screen – and produce a detailed A4 observational study in graphite or fineliner. Annotate your drawing to explain the choice of object, the formal elements you have emphasised (line, texture, tone, negative space), and how this object could symbolise connection or separation in a larger artwork.’

To score highly for AO3, your drawing must move beyond a simple contour sketch. Include a full range of values, from deep blacks to crisp highlights, and pay attention to surface texture. Annotations written directly around the drawing should use technical language – words such as ‘hatching’, ‘stippling’, ‘directional mark-making’ and ‘visual weight’ demonstrate a mature grasp of formal qualities. Crucially, link your observations to the theme. Instead of writing ‘I drew a chain-link fence’, annotate: ‘The repeating rhombus pattern creates rhythm, yet the cold metallic surface and sharp edges suggest incarceration – a powerful barrier motif.’

Common pitfalls include weak composition (the object floating in the centre of the page), lack of tonal contrast, and annotations that simply label parts of the object. Avoid phrases like ‘this is a good drawing’ or ‘I like this texture’. Instead, explain how a specific visual element affects the viewer’s reading and how it might be developed. For example, ‘The cropped composition and close-up viewpoint make the barrier feel overwhelming, as if there is no escape – this could be amplified in a mixed-media piece by layering translucent papers.’

4. Section B: Artist Research and Comparison | 第B部分:艺术家研究与比较

Section B provides images of two contrasting works: ‘The Wall’ (1985) by Magdalena Abakanowicz, featuring a row of headless burlap figures, and ‘Wrapped Reichstag’ (1995) by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, showing the Berlin parliament building veiled in silvery fabric. The question reads: ‘Compare how these artists explore ideas of barrier, concealment and revelation. Discuss the materials, scale and viewer experience, and explain which approach offers more potential for your own ‘Barriers and Connections’ project.’

Start your answer with a focused opening sentence that acknowledges the thematic link. Then, analyse each work systematically before drawing comparisons. Use comparative connectives such as ‘in contrast to’, ‘similarly’, ‘whereas’, and ‘while’. High-achieving responses go beyond description of subject matter: they discuss emotional impact, symbolic resonance, and the role of the audience. For Abakanowicz, you might write: ‘The repetitive, hollow figures create a visceral barrier of absence; the organic roughness of burlap evokes human vulnerability, making the wall psychological rather than physical.’

For Christo and Jeanne-Claude, focus on the ambiguity of wrapping: ‘The fabric conceals yet draws attention; it transforms an authoritarian structure into a ghostly, shimmering presence. The temporary nature of the installation suggests that barriers, even monumental ones, can be dismantled.’ Then, synthesise your comparison: ‘While Abakanowicz uses enduring, tactile materials to expose trauma, Christo and Jeanne-Claude employ ephemeral fabric to reimagine power. For my project, the former’s focus on bodily absence could translate into a series of life-cast hands pressing against translucent Perspex, physically enacting a barrier between viewer and subject.’

5. Section C: Development of Personal Ideas | 第C部分:个人创意发展

The final section asks: ‘Drawing on your research, generate three distinct initial ideas for a final outcome. For each, include a small thumbnail sketch, a list of proposed materials and a short justification that explicitly references your artist analysis and the theme. Select your strongest idea and present a more detailed plan, explaining how you would refine it through experimentation.’

To access the highest bands for AO2 and AO4, avoid recycling the same medium or composition. Idea 1 might be a charcoal and masking-tape drawing exploring physical obstruction. Idea 2 could be a digital photomontage layering images of fences over intimate portraits. Idea 3 could involve three-dimensional wire and tissue structures casting shadows that form the word ‘connect’. Each idea must explicitly refer back to an element of your artist research – for instance, ‘Inspired by the temporary nature of Christo’s wrapping, my installation will use dissolving paper that gradually reveals a hidden message during the exhibition.’

Your chosen strongest idea needs a refinement plan. Describe a series of mini-experiments: testing different weights of paper, trialling monochromatic vs. saturated colour, exploring scale through models. Explain how these decisions will enhance meaning. The note ‘I will experiment with different materials’ is too vague. Instead, write: ‘By substituting tracing paper for card in the barriers’ surface layer, I can introduce translucency, symbolising the permeability of emotional boundaries – this directly develops my annotation from Section A.’
