SQA Art Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | SQA

📚 SQA Art Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | SQA

In the SQA Advanced Higher Art and Design, creativity is supported by a deep understanding of visual principles. While art may seem free from rules, many timeless techniques can be expressed as ‘formulas’ – repeatable relationships of proportion, colour, perspective and balance. This handbook collects these essential formulas and theorems, providing you with a quick reference to strengthen your analytical and practical work.

1. The Golden Ratio Theorem |

The Golden Ratio, approximately 1 : 1.618, appears in nature and has been used by artists to create aesthetically pleasing compositions. A line segment divided so that the ratio of the whole to the longer part equals the ratio of the longer part to the shorter part obeys: a/b = (a+b)/a = φ ≈ 1.618.

In practice, place the focal point at a division that follows φ, or use a golden rectangle for canvas dimensions. Many Renaissance paintings, such as Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’, exhibit golden proportions in the face and landscape.

2. Rule of Thirds Formula |

The Rule of Thirds divides the frame into nine equal rectangles by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. The formula for positioning key elements: place points of interest at any intersection of these lines, i.e., at coordinates (w/3, h/3), (2w/3, h/3), (w/3, 2h/3), etc., where w = width, h = height.

This creates dynamic asymmetry and avoids placing the subject dead centre. Landscapes often place the horizon along the upper or lower horizontal third line.

3. Linear Perspective Vanishing Point Theorem |

In one-point perspective, all receding parallel lines converge at a single vanishing point on the horizon line. The theorem can be expressed using similar triangles: if an object of known height H is at distance D from the viewer, its apparent height h on the picture plane is h = H × (d/D), where d = distance from eye to picture plane.

For two-point perspective, vertical lines remain vertical, while horizontals converge to two vanishing points. Artists like Edward Hopper used precise perspective formulas to construct believable urban scenes.

4. Colour Wheel Complement Theorem |

Two colours directly opposite each other on the colour wheel are complementary. Their additive formula: Complement (C) = (C + 180°) mod 360° on the HSL hue circle. For pigments, mixing complementary colours (e.g., red and green) produces a neutral grey or brown, according to subtractive mixing: Red + Green ≈ Black (theoretically).

When complements are placed side by side, they create maximum contrast and visual vibration. Post-Impressionists like Van Gogh exploited red-green complements to intensify emotional impact.

5. Colour Harmony Triadic Formula |

A triadic colour scheme uses three colours equally spaced on the colour wheel. Formula: Choose a base hue H, then the other two are H + 120° and H + 240° (mod 360°). For example, red, yellow and blue form a primary triadic scheme.

Triadic harmonies are vibrant and balanced, often used when strong visual contrast is desired. Piet Mondrian’s compositions rely heavily on the red-yellow-blue triad.

6. Simultaneous Contrast Formula |

A colour is perceived differently depending on its surrounding colours. The effect can be approximated by: Perceived hue ≈ True hue + (0.2 × (True hue – Surround hue)), where hue values are in degrees. This formula shows that a grey on a red background will take on a greenish tint (green is opposite red).

This principle is vital in colour field painting and installation art, where the artist manipulates simultaneous contrast to make colours appear more luminous. Joseph Albers’ ‘Homage to the Square’ series meticulously demonstrates this theorem.

7. Chevreul’s Law of Successive Contrast |

After looking at a colour, the eye tends to produce its complementary afterimage. The formula for the afterimage hue is: Afterimage hue = (Original hue + 180°) mod 360°. If you stare at a red shape for 30 seconds then look at a white surface, you will see a cyan-green afterimage.

This physiological response is often used in Op Art to create optical illusions. Bridget Riley’s works exploit successive contrast to generate apparent movement.

8. Aerial Perspective Attenuation Formula |

Distant objects appear lighter, cooler in colour and lower in contrast due to atmospheric scattering. The contrast reduction can be modelled as: C(d) = C₀ × e⁻ᵏᵈ, where d is distance, C₀ is the contrast of a near object, and k is an extinction coefficient. Colours shift towards blue: Object colour = original colour × (1 – e⁻ᵝᵈ) + sky blue × e⁻ᵝᵈ.

Leonardo da Vinci observed this and used it in sfumato to create depth. Landscape painters apply this formula intuitively by mixing more white and blue for distant mountains.

9. Visual Weight Balance Equation |

In a composition, visual balance can be thought of as a seesaw: the product of visual weight and distance from the centre must be equal. A simplified equation: ∑ (Weightᵢ × Distanceᵢ) = 0. Weight factors: darker tones (×1.5), high saturation (×1.3), human faces (×2.0), large area (proportional to area).

A small dark element far from the centre can balance a large light element near the centre. This formula helps explain the dynamic equilibrium in abstract works by artists like Kandinsky.

10. Fibonacci Spiral Composition Theorem |

The Fibonacci sequence F(n) = F(n-1) + F(n-2) (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…) generates a spiral that guides the viewer’s eye. A quarter-circle drawn in each Fibonacci-sized square forms a continuous spiral. The eye naturally follows this path from the centre outward or vice versa.

Positioning the main subject at the tightest part of the spiral creates a strong focal point. This tool is widely used in photography and classical painting to organize complex scenes.

11. The 60-30-10 Colour Proportion Rule | 60-30-10

A proven interior design and painting palette distribution: 60% dominant colour, 30% secondary colour, 10% accent colour. In terms of area coverage formula: A_dominant = 0.6A_total, A_secondary = 0.3A_total, A_accent = 0.1A_total. This creates hierarchy without overwhelming the eye.

用面积覆盖公式表示:A_dominant = 0.6A_total, A_secondary = 0.3A_total, A_accent = 0.1A_total。

In a painting, the dominant colour could be a broad sky, the secondary a field of green, and the accent small figures or flowers in a bright hue. This formula provides instant visual harmony.

12. Gestalt Grouping Laws Summary |

These perceptual principles form a set of theorems for how the brain organizes visual elements into wholes. Key laws: Proximity (elements near each other are grouped), Similarity (alike elements are grouped), Closure (brain fills missing gaps to form a complete shape), Continuity (lines are seen as following the smoothest path). The combined probability formula for grouping strength: P(group) ∝ (1/distance) × (similarity) × (good continuation).

Graphic designers and fine artists use Gestalt laws to direct attention and create meaning. For instance, incomplete circles are perceived as whole circles. This reduces the need for literal rendering.
