📚 Year 12 CAIE Accounting: Summer Preview and Bridging Course | Year 12 CAIE

Welcome to AS Level Accounting. The transition from IGCSE or equivalent study into Year 12 demands a confident grasp of fundamental principles and a readiness to apply double‑entry logic to more complex business scenarios. This preview will revisit the core concepts you will meet early in the Cambridge AS Accounting syllabus, clarifying what counts as ‘good practice’ and where new depth is added. Our aims are to refresh your memory on double‑entry, source documents, books of prime entry, ledgers, trial balance, and financial statements, and to introduce the key adjustments that turn a basic trial balance into published accounts. You will also find practical bridging advice to make your summer revision effective.

1. Why Accounting? Transition from IGCSE to AS Level | 为什么学会计?

At IGCSE you learned to record transactions, balance accounts, and prepare a simple set of financial statements for sole traders. AS Level builds directly on that foundation. However, the syllabus introduces deeper analysis of accounting concepts, the application of International Accounting Standards (IAS) in areas like inventory valuation and depreciation, and the preparation of financial statements for partnerships and limited companies. You will also be expected to evaluate accounting policies and make reasoned recommendations – a skill that goes beyond bookkeeping. The ‘gap’ is therefore not in the mechanics of debits and credits but in the understanding of why specific treatments are required and how they affect profit and financial position.

2. The Double-Entry System: The Foundation |

Every AS Accounting topic depends on a flawless understanding of double‑entry. Remember: for every debit there must be an equal and opposite credit. The accounting equation (Assets = Capital + Liabilities) is the backbone; every transaction alters at least two elements while preserving the equation. When you increase an asset, you debit that asset account. When you increase a liability or capital, you credit the relevant account. Income increases capital and is therefore credited; expenses decrease capital and are debited. Before the term starts, practise recording transactions in T‑accounts until you can do it without hesitation – purchases, sales, returns, discounts, expenses, drawings, and capital introduced.

3. Source Documents: Where It All Begins |

Accounting data does not appear from nowhere. Every entry is supported by a source document. For AS, you must recognise invoices (purchase and sales), credit notes, debit notes, cheques, paying‑in slips, bank statements, and petty cash vouchers. An invoice records a credit sale or purchase; a credit note is issued for returns or overcharges. The key is to see how a single transaction creates a chain: source document → book of prime entry → ledger accounts → trial balance → financial statements. Being able to trace information back to the original document demonstrates rigour and is frequently tested in structured questions.

4. Books of Prime Entry: Recording Transactions Efficiently |

Instead of entering every transaction directly into the ledgers, businesses use books of prime entry: sales day book, purchases day book, sales returns day book, purchases returns day book, cash book (a dual‑purpose book and ledger), and the general journal. The AS syllabus expects you to understand the purpose of each, write up these books from given source documents, and post the totals to the relevant ledger accounts. The cash book typically has discount allowed and discount received columns; you must be able to post these discounts to the general ledger. Practice with multi‑column cash books now, as they appear very early in the course.

Ledgers are the principal books where double‑entry is completed. You must be comfortable with the three main divisions: sales ledger (debtors’ personal accounts), purchases ledger (creditors’ personal accounts), and the general (nominal) ledger containing all other accounts. At AS Level, you will frequently be asked to write up and balance accounts, and to interpret the balance carried down (c/d) brought down (b/d) meanings. Remember the closing routine: total both sides, calculate the difference, enter a balance c/d on the smaller side, and then carry the balance b/d to the opposite side after the account is ruled off. Speed and accuracy here save time in the exam and prevent errors from cascading into the trial balance.

6. Trial Balance: Checking the Arithmetical Accuracy |

A trial balance lists all ledger account balances at a given date. It is not part of the double‑entry system; it is a checking mechanism. If total debits equal total credits, the books are ‘in balance’, but this does not mean they are error‑free. You must know the types of errors that a trial balance reveals (e.g., single entry, casting error) and those it does not (e.g., omission, commission, principle, compensating, original entry, complete reversal). AS questions often present an unbalanced trial balance and a suspense account, requiring you to correct errors and then redraft the trial balance. This is a heavily examined skill; practise by compiling a trial balance from a list of balances and adjusting for common errors.

7. Income Statement & Statement of Financial Position: An Overview |

The income statement calculates profit or loss for a period, while the statement of financial position shows the financial state at a point in time. In AS, these statements incorporate adjustments for accruals, prepayments, depreciation, irrecoverable debts, and allowance for doubtful debts. You will also prepare them for partnerships (with appropriation of profit) and limited companies (with share capital and reserves). Structure is vital: for a sole trader, gross profit is sales less cost of sales; cost of sales = opening inventory + purchases – purchases returns + carriage inwards – closing inventory. Then deduct expenses to reach profit for the year. The statement of financial position follows the equation: Non‑current assets + current assets – current liabilities – non‑current liabilities = capital (or equity). Learn these formats by heart and practise writing them from a given trial balance with notes.

8. Adjustments: Accruals, Prepayments, and Depreciation |

The matching (accruals) concept requires that expenses and income are recognised in the period to which they relate, not when cash is paid or received. An accrual is an expense incurred but not yet paid; it is added to the expense in the income statement and shown as a current liability. A prepayment is an expense paid in advance; it is deducted from the expense and shown as a current asset. Depreciation allocates the cost of a non‑current asset over its useful life. You must be able to calculate depreciation using the straight‑line method (cost × %) and the reducing‑balance method (net book value × %). The charge appears in the income statement, and the total accumulated depreciation is netted against the cost of non‑current assets in the statement of financial position. These adjustments are the single biggest leap from IGCSE to AS – begin practising them now, with clear working layouts.

9. Accounting for Non-Current Assets & Depreciation Methods |

AS Accounting requires a deeper understanding of IAS 16 Property, Plant and Equipment. You need to record acquisitions, revaluations, disposals, and depreciation. For disposals, a disposal account is used: transfer the asset’s cost to the disposal account (debit), transfer the accumulated depreciation on that asset (credit), record the sale proceeds (credit disposal, debit cash), and the balancing figure is the profit or loss on disposal. The reducing‑balance method gives a higher charge in early years, while straight‑line spreads the cost evenly. Be ready to discuss which method better reflects the pattern of economic benefits consumed and how the choice affects profit and asset values.

10. Bridging the Gap: Study Tips for Year 12 Success | 衔接差距:Year 12 成功的学习建议

Summer preparation is not about learning the AS syllabus in advance; it is about confident retrieval of all IGCSE content and an early introduction to the new vocabulary of adjustments. Build a habit: spend 30 minutes a day rewriting the accounting equation, practising T‑accounts, and constructing simple income statements and statements of financial position from a list of balances. Compile a personal glossary of IAS terminology – recognition, measurement, accruals basis, going concern, materiality – because AS mark schemes reward accurate use of these terms. Finally, source a good revision guide aligned with the CAIE 9706 syllabus and begin working through short exercises that involve adjusting entries and suspense accounts. The effort you put in now will transform your first term from a scramble into a smooth, confident start.
