1. The Divine Attributes |

In classical theism, God is typically defined as a being that possesses the attributes of omnipotence, omniscience, and supreme goodness. Omnipotence is often understood as the ability to do anything that is logically possible; absolute omnipotence would include the capacity to bring about logically impossible states of affairs, but most philosophers restrict the attribute to what is coherent. The well-known paradox of the stone asks: can God create a stone so heavy that He cannot lift it? If He cannot create such a stone, there is something He cannot do; if He can, then there is a stone He cannot lift, again implying a limitation. Many theists respond by refining omnipotence to mean the power to do all logically possible acts, resolving the paradox.

Omniscience is the property of knowing all true propositions. This raises the question of whether divine foreknowledge is compatible with human free will. If God infallibly knows that I will perform action X tomorrow, then it is necessarily true that I will do X, seeming to eliminate my freedom to do otherwise. Some replies appeal to a timeless eternity: God sees all moments in a single eternal present, so His knowledge does not causally determine the future. The attribute of supreme goodness generates the Euthyphro dilemma: is an action right because God commands it, or does God command it because it is right? The first horn makes morality arbitrary; the second suggests morality exists independently of God.

2. The Ontological Argument |

Anselm’s ontological argument defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. He argues that such a being must exist in reality, because a being that exists both in the mind and in reality is greater than one that exists only in the mind. If God existed only in the mind, we could conceive of a greater being – one that also exists in reality – which would be a contradiction. Hence God exists. Gaunilo replied using the analogy of a perfect island: we can conceive of the greatest conceivable island, but that does not bring it into existence. Anselm’s response is that the argument applies only to a necessary being, not to contingent objects like islands.

Descartes offered a different version: existence is a perfection, and God, as the supremely perfect being, must possess all perfections; therefore God exists. Kant famously objected that existence is not a real predicate or perfection – it does not add to the concept of a thing. When we say that a thing exists, we are not attributing a property to it, but rather positing that the concept is instantiated. Thus the ontological argument fails because it treats existence as if it were a characteristic that a being could lack.

3. The Design Argument |

William Paley’s watchmaker analogy argues that just as the complexity and purposeful arrangement of a watch implies an intelligent designer, the far greater complexity of the natural world implies a divine designer. The argument is a posteriori and inductive: from the observation of order and apparent purpose, we infer a designer. Hume, through the character Philo, offered multiple criticisms before Paley’s work. He argued that the universe is not sufficiently similar to a machine to warrant the analogy; the presence of evil and imperfection suggests a flawed or limited designer; and even if a designer were needed, the argument does not establish the God of classical theism – it could be an inferior deity, a plurality of gods, or an apprentice god.

Contemporary versions focus on the fine-tuning of the universe. The fundamental physical constants and initial conditions appear to be incredibly finely tuned to permit life; even a minuscule variation would make life impossible. The inference to design is challenged by the multiverse hypothesis: if there are infinitely many universes with varying constants, it is unsurprising that at least one, our own, supports life. Critics also point out that the argument from fine-tuning assumes that life is an intended goal, which may rest on an anthropocentric bias.

4. The Cosmological Argument |

Aquinas’ first three ways are classic cosmological arguments. The First Way argues from motion (change): things are in a state of change, and whatever is moved must be moved by another; this chain cannot regress infinitely, so there must be a first unmoved mover, which is God. The Second Way argues from efficient causation: every event has a cause, and an infinite regress of causes is impossible, therefore a first uncaused cause exists. The Third Way argues from contingency: contingent beings depend on something else for their existence; if everything were contingent, there could have been a time when nothing existed, and then nothing would exist now, which is absurd. Hence a necessary being, God, must exist to sustain all contingent beings.

The Kalam cosmological argument, defended by William Lane Craig, adds an emphasis on temporal finitude: everything that begins to exist has a cause; the universe began to exist; therefore the universe has a cause, which is identified as God. Hume and Russell challenged the very principle of sufficient reason and causal necessity. Hume argued we never experience the necessity of a cause; we only observe constant conjunction. Russell claimed the universe just is, and asking for a cause of the whole is a category mistake. The argument also faces the question of why the first cause must have the attributes of God.

5. The Problem of Evil |

The logical problem of evil presents an inconsistent triad: God is omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and evil exists. If God is all-powerful, He can prevent evil; if He is all-loving, He would want to. Since evil exists, an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God cannot exist. J.L. Mackie argued that no theodicy can successfully reconcile these three propositions unless at least one is qualified. The free will defence, developed by Alvin Plantinga, asserts that it is logically possible that God could not create a world with both free moral agents and no moral evil, because genuine freedom requires the possibility of choosing wrongly. A world with free creatures who sometimes do evil is a greater good than a world of automata.

The evidential problem, formulated by William Rowe, focuses on the sheer quantity and distribution of seemingly pointless suffering. It argues that there exist instances of intense suffering that a loving God could have prevented without forfeiting any greater good; therefore, God probably does not exist. John Hick’s soul-making theodicy responds by interpreting suffering as necessary for moral and spiritual development. Evil provides the obstacles through which virtues such as courage and compassion are formed. Critics question whether the amount of suffering is truly proportionate to soul-making, and why an omnipotent God could not create beings already perfected in virtue without suffering.

6. Religious Language |

The verification principle, proposed by the logical positivists, holds that a statement is only meaningful if it is either analytically true or empirically verifiable. Ayer argued that religious claims such as ‘God exists’ are neither true by definition nor verifiable by sense experience, and are therefore cognitively meaningless. Flew applied the falsification principle to religious language, using the parable of the gardener. He contended that religious believers allow nothing to count against their assertions, so their claims ‘die the death by a thousand qualifications’ and lack factual significance. Hare responded with the notion of ‘blik’ – a fundamental, non-falsifiable framework through which one interprets experience – arguing that religious bliks still shape life in meaningful ways.

Alternative accounts suggest religious language is meaningful through analogy, symbol, or non-cognitive expression. Aquinas argued that we speak of God analogically: terms like ‘good’ apply to God not univocally (exactly the same sense as with creatures) or equivocally (totally different), but analogously, based on a proportion between Creator and creation. Wittgenstein’s later work inspired the view that language has meaning only within its specific ‘language game’ and form of life. On this view, religious language is meaningful within the religious way of life, and it is a mistake to demand that it conform to scientific standards of verification.

7. Substance Dualism |

Substance dualism is the view that mind and body are two fundamentally distinct substances. Descartes’ conceivability argument states: I can clearly and distinctly conceive of myself as a thinking thing without a body, and of my body as an extended thing without thought. Since I can conceive of their separation, it is metaphysically possible, and thus mind and body are distinct. The divisibility argument adds that the body is divisible into spatial parts, while the mind is utterly indivisible; therefore, they cannot be the same substance. The interaction problem, pressed by Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia, asks how an immaterial mind can cause changes in a material body (and vice versa) if they share no common properties.

The problem of other minds challenges dualism: if we can only directly access our own mental states, what justifies our belief that other bodies have minds? The argument from analogy suggests that we observe similar behaviour in others and infer their mental life from our own case. However, this is a weak inference from a single instance. The argument from best explanation holds that postulating other minds best explains the complex behaviour of others. Yet dualism’s commitment to private, non-physical souls makes the evidence of behaviour always indirect, leaving scepticism live.

8. Property Dualism and the Knowledge Argument |

Property dualism holds that, while there may be only one kind of substance (physical), mental properties are non-physical and irreducible. Frank Jackson’s knowledge argument features Mary, a brilliant scientist who has lived her entire life in a black-and-white room and knows all the physical facts about colour vision. Upon leaving the room and seeing red for the first time, Mary learns what it is like to see red. Since she knew all the physical facts beforehand but still learned something new, physical facts do not exhaust all facts; thus, phenomenal qualia are non-physical properties.

Nagel’s ‘what it is like’ argument insists that no amount of objective, physical description can capture the subjective character of experience. To know what it is like to be a bat, one must have a bat’s point of view. Similarly, the zombie argument by Chalmers asserts that a world physically identical to ours but lacking phenomenal consciousness is conceivable; if such a world is possible, consciousness is not entailed by the physical. Critics of the knowledge argument, such as Lewis and Nemirow, claim that Mary gains only ability knowledge (knowing how to recognise, imagine, or remember red), not factual knowledge, so what she learns is not a new proposition. Others argue that physicalism can accommodate the new perspective as a representation of old facts under a different mode of presentation.

9. Behaviourism and Mind-Brain Identity Theory |

Philosophical behaviourism analyses mental states in terms of observable behaviour or dispositions to behave. Ryle’s logical behaviourism rejects the ‘ghost in the machine’ and accuses dualism of a category mistake: it treats the mind as a non-physical thing that stands to the body as pilot to ship, whereas mental terms really refer to ways of acting. To say someone is thirsty is not to report an inner state but to describe a pattern of drinking behaviour. Hard behaviourism (Hempel) goes further, claiming that psychological statements are translatable without remainder into statements about bodily behaviour. Objections include the perfect actor (who exhibits all outward behaviour without the mental state) and the super-spartan (who has the mental state but suppresses all behavioural expression), showing that mental states cannot be reduced to behaviour alone.
