1. The Origins of the Cold War: Ideology and Tensions |

The roots of the Cold War can be traced to conflicting ideologies between the capitalist West, led by the United States, and the communist East, dominated by the Soviet Union. Even before the end of the Second World War, disagreements over the future of liberated Europe created deep mistrust. The Yalta and Potsdam conferences revealed divergent visions for post-war order, particularly regarding Poland and Germany.

The US policy of containment, articulated in the Truman Doctrine of 1947, committed America to preventing the spread of communism worldwide. This was followed by the Marshall Plan, a massive economic aid programme aimed at rebuilding Western Europe and, by extension, making it resistant to communist influence. Stalin perceived these moves as a direct threat to Soviet security and responded by tightening control over Eastern Europe.

2. The Division of Germany and the Berlin Blockade |

Germany became the epicentre of early Cold War confrontation. The wartime allies failed to agree on a unified German state, leading to the creation of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) in 1949. Berlin, located deep inside the Soviet zone, was itself divided into four sectors but effectively became a Western enclave.

In June 1948, Stalin blockaded all road, rail and canal links to West Berlin, hoping to force the Western powers out of the city. The response was the Berlin Airlift, a remarkable logistical operation in which American and British planes supplied the city for nearly a year. The blockade failed and was lifted in May 1949, hardening the division of Europe and accelerating the formation of NATO.

3. The Nuclear Arms Race and Deterrence Theory |

The Soviet Union’s successful test of an atomic bomb in 1949 shattered the American nuclear monopoly and triggered a dangerous arms race. Both superpowers developed hydrogen bombs and long-range delivery systems, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), by the late 1950s. The principle of mutually assured destruction (MAD) emerged, contending that neither side would launch a first strike because it would lead to the complete annihilation of both.

This nuclear standoff directly influenced crises over Berlin and Cuba. Historians debate whether nuclear weapons kept the Cold War ‘cold’ by acting as a stabilising force, or whether they increased the risk of catastrophic miscalculation. The arms race also imposed enormous economic burdens on both sides, shaping domestic politics and public anxiety.

4. The Hungarian Uprising, 1956 | 1956

Nikita Khrushchev’s de-Stalinisation campaign, launched in his Secret Speech of 1956, raised hopes for liberalisation across the Eastern Bloc. In Hungary, these hopes erupted into a nationwide uprising against Soviet-imposed rule. The new government under Imre Nagy declared neutrality and withdrew from the Warsaw Pact, threatening the cohesion of the communist bloc.

The Soviet response was brutal: Red Army tanks rolled into Budapest in November 1956, crushing the rebellion and executing Nagy two years later. The West, distracted by the Suez Crisis, offered only rhetorical support. The uprising demonstrated the limits of peaceful change within the Soviet sphere and reinforced the iron grip of Moscow.

5. The Berlin Wall: Crisis and Construction |

By 1961, the contrast between prosperous West Berlin and the economically struggling East had become a major embarrassment for the Soviet Union. A steady flow of skilled workers and professionals fled to the West via Berlin, draining the GDR of its talent. Khrushchev issued an ultimatum demanding Western withdrawal from Berlin, but President Kennedy refused to concede.

In August 1961, East German authorities, backed by the Soviets, erected a wall of concrete and barbed wire, physically dividing the city. The Wall became the most potent symbol of the Cold War, separating families and epitomising the ideological divide. It also stabilised the situation by ending the refugee crisis, though at a terrible human cost.

6. The Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962 | 1962

The most dangerous moment of the Cold War came in October 1962 when US reconnaissance discovered Soviet nuclear missile sites under construction in Cuba, just 90 miles from Florida. President Kennedy imposed a naval blockade and demanded the removal of the missiles. For thirteen days, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war.

Secret diplomacy between Kennedy and Khrushchev eventually resolved the crisis: the Soviets agreed to withdraw the missiles in exchange for a US pledge not to invade Cuba and, secretly, the removal of American Jupiter missiles from Turkey. Both leaders emerged sobered by the near-miss, leading to a period of détente and the establishment of a direct hotline between Washington and Moscow.

7. The Prague Spring and the Brezhnev Doctrine |

In 1968, reformist communist Alexander Dubček introduced a programme of liberalisation in Czechoslovakia, promising ‘socialism with a human face’. Censorship was relaxed, travel restrictions lifted, and economic reforms begun. The Prague Spring enjoyed widespread popular support but alarmed hardliners in Moscow and other Warsaw Pact countries.

In August, Soviet-led forces invaded and crushed the reform movement. The Brezhnev Doctrine was subsequently proclaimed, asserting the Soviet Union’s right to intervene in any socialist country threatened by counter-revolution. Like Hungary, Czechoslovakia demonstrated that liberalisation within the Soviet bloc would not be tolerated, further deepening Eastern European resentment.

8. Détente in the 1970s: Agreements and Limits | 1970

The horrors of near-miss crises propelled both superpowers toward a relaxation of tensions known as détente. Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) led to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the SALT I agreement in 1972, capping certain nuclear weapons. The Helsinki Accords of 1975 recognised the existing borders in Europe and committed signatories to respect human rights.

However, détente was fragile and selective. The Soviet Union continued to build up its conventional and nuclear forces, and its involvement in proxy wars in Africa and Afghanistan raised doubts in the West about Soviet intentions. By the end of Jimmy Carter’s term, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 had effectively killed the détente era.

9. The Rise of Solidarity in Poland |

Economic stagnation and the election of a Polish cardinal as Pope John Paul II in 1978 emboldened opposition in Poland. In 1980, a strike at the Gdańsk shipyard led by Lech Wałęsa gave birth to the independent trade union Solidarity. Within months, Solidarity grew into a mass movement of ten million members, demanding political and economic reform.

Fearing Soviet intervention, the Polish government declared martial law in December 1981 and imprisoned Solidarity’s leaders. Yet the movement survived underground and continued to press for change. Its resilience showed that collective opposition could challenge communist rule from within, setting a precedent for other Eastern Bloc states.

10. Gorbachev and the Ending of the Cold War |

Mikhail Gorbachev’s accession to power in 1985 marked a turning point. His twin policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) aimed to revitalise the stagnating Soviet system but unleashed forces beyond his control. Gorbachev abandoned the Brezhnev Doctrine, making clear that Eastern European countries could determine their own futures.

In 1989, a wave of peaceful revolutions swept across the Eastern Bloc, culminating in the fall of the Berlin Wall in November. The Soviet Union itself disintegrated in December 1991. Historians continue to debate the relative roles of Gorbachev’s reforms, Western pressure, and the internal decay of the communist system in bringing the Cold War to an end.

11. Historiographical Debates and Interpretations |

The study of Cold War history is shaped by evolving schools of thought. Traditionalist historians, writing in the early years, tended to blame Soviet aggression and totalitarianism. Revisionist scholars, influenced by the 1960s, argued that American economic expansionism and nuclear posturing were equally responsible. Post-revisionist accounts sought a more nuanced synthesis, focusing on mutual misperceptions and structural factors.

More recently, historians have examined the role of ideology, culture, and non-state actors, and have paid greater attention to the experiences of Eastern Europeans and the Global South. For Cambridge examinations, you must be able to evaluate primary sources in light of these historiographical perspectives and show awareness of how interpretations change over time.

12. Exam Skills: Source Analysis and Essay Writing |

Paper 3 requires careful analysis of primary and secondary sources. Begin by considering the provenance, including author, date, audience and purpose. Cross-reference claims with your own knowledge, and assess the tone and emphasis to detect bias. Remember that every source is valuable once you understand its limitations and context.

For essay papers, planning is essential. Your introduction should define key terms and set out a clear, argumentative thesis. Main body paragraphs must use the PEEL structure (Point-Evidence-Explanation-Link), and your conclusion should synthesise the argument without mere repetition. Practise writing timed essays using past questions to build both speed and coherence.
