1. Understanding the AQA AS Media Studies Specification | 了解 AQA AS 媒体研究大纲
The AQA AS Media Studies qualification (code 7571) is a one-year course assessed through two written examination papers, each worth 50% of the final grade. Component 1: Media Products, Industries and Audiences covers media language, representation, media industries and audiences. Component 2: Media Forms and Products in Depth requires close study of three media forms out of television, magazines, newspapers, music video, advertising, film, radio, video games and online media.
You must study a range of AQA Close Study Products (CSPs) which are updated periodically. These set texts allow you to apply theories to real-world examples, from newspapers like the Daily Mail to music videos such as ‘Titanium’. Familiarity with the CSPs is absolutely central to success, as exam questions are built around them.
Each exam lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and contains a mix of short-answer and extended response questions. You will be expected to demonstrate knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. The specification also embeds a wide range of contexts — social, cultural, political, economic and technological — that you must weave into your answers.
2. Key Theoretical Frameworks |
AS Media Studies is built on a set of theoretical lenses that guide analysis. Below is an overview of the essential thinkers you will encounter regularly. Mastering these theories is not about memorising names — it is about using them as tools to deconstruct meaning in media texts.
|---|---|---|
| Semiotics / 符号学 | Roland Barthes / 罗兰·巴特 | Media texts communicate through signs, codes and myths; meaning is not fixed but constructed. |
| Narratology / 叙事学 | Tzvetan Todorov / 茨维坦·托多罗夫 | Narratives follow an equilibrium-disequilibrium-new equilibrium structure. |
| Genre Theory / 类型理论 | Steve Neale / 史蒂夫·尼尔 | Genres rely on repetition and difference; they evolve over time to maintain audience interest. |
| Binary Opposition / 二元对立 | Claude Levi-Strauss / 克劳德·列维-斯特劳斯 | Meaning is created through opposing concepts such as good/evil, young/old. |
| Representation / 表征 | Stuart Hall / 斯图亚特·霍尔 | Representation is the process by which meaning is produced and exchanged; it can reinforce or challenge stereotypes. |
| Identity / 身份 | David Gauntlett / 大卫·冈特莱特 | Media provides a diverse range of resources for individuals to construct their own identities. |
| Power and Media Industries / 权力与媒体产业 | James Curran & Jean Seaton / 詹姆斯·柯伦 & 简·西顿 | Media ownership concentrates power and limits diversity; public service broadcasting is essential. |
| Cultural Industries / 文化产业 | David Hesmondhalgh / 大卫·赫斯蒙德哈尔 | Media industries seek to manage risk and maximise profit; creativity exists within commercial constraints. |
In addition, you will engage with feminist frameworks (Van Zoonen, bell hooks), postcolonial perspectives (Gilroy), audience reception (Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model) and theories of fandom (Henry Jenkins). Applying these ideas to set products is a skill that marks the leap from GCSE to A Level.
3. Media Language and Textual Analysis |
Media language refers to the symbolic, technical and written conventions used to create meaning. At AS level you must move beyond simple content description and use precise terminology to analyse mise-en-scene, camerawork, editing, sound, layout and colour.
Begin with denotation (the literal, descriptive level) and then explore connotation (the deeper, associative meanings). For example, a low-angle camera shot denotes looking up at a subject but connotes power and dominance. Writing about media language means showing how choices construct a preferred reading.
On the AS papers, you will be asked to apply semiotic analysis to unseen texts. Practice deconstructing posters, opening sequences, and double-page spreads using a toolkit of codes: visual, technical, audio and written. Referring to Barthes’ enigma codes or action codes can elevate your analysis.
4. Representation in Media |
Representation is about re-presenting the world — selecting, mediating and constructing versions of reality. Stuart Hall argues that representation involves an active process of encoding meanings that audiences then decode. At AS level you must interrogate how media texts construct social groups, events and issues.
Stereotypes are a key concept: they reduce complex individuals to a few exaggerated traits and often serve to maintain power imbalances. Yet media can also offer countertypes that challenge assumptions. AQA expects you to discuss how representations are shaped by ideological and institutional contexts.
Apply theories from Van Zoonen (gender as performance) or hooks (intersectionality) when examining magazines, adverts or music videos. Always anchor your discussion in specific examples from your Close Study Products — discussing, for instance, the representation of women in the ‘Score’ hair cream advert or the ‘Hidden Figures’ film campaign reveals much about changing societal values.
5. Audience Theories and Engagement |
Audience study shifts from seeing people as passive receivers to active participants. Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications model identifies key needs audiences satisfy through media: diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance (information).
Stuart Hall’s reception theory is essential: audiences may adopt a dominant, negotiated or oppositional reading of a text. This is directly tested in AS exams. You must also understand how media institutions construct target audiences and the ways interactive technologies have blurred the line between producer and consumer, as described by Henry Jenkins’ concept of participatory culture.
Examiners reward answers that recognise how audiences interpret the same text differently based on age, gender, culture and the context of consumption. When revising CSPs such as the ‘Kiss FM’ radio breakfast show or ‘The i’ newspaper, always consider the target demographic and the strategies used to appeal to them.
6. Media Industries and Contexts |
This part of the specification asks you to examine the impact of ownership, regulation, funding and globalisation on media production. Curran and Seaton argue that media concentration limits creativity and diversity. They champion the role of public service broadcasting (PSB) in serving the public interest.
Hesmondhalgh’s cultural industries approach shows how media companies minimise risk through formatting, star power and cross-media promotion. You should know the role of regulators: Ofcom in the UK for television and radio, the IPSO for many newspapers, and the ASA for advertising. Livingstone and Lunt’s work highlights the tension between protecting the public and enabling media freedom.
Economic contexts are also vital: the decline of print circulation, the rise of digital revenue models, and the impact of tech giants on traditional media. Use concrete data from your CSPs, such as the circulation figures of the Daily Mail or the funding model of the BBC, to support your arguments.
7. Assessment Objectives and Exam Structure |
AQA defines three assessment objectives (AOs) that shape every question. Understanding what they reward is the foundation of effective revision.
