Line – the path of a moving point, which can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines can be actual, implied, or suggested through edges.

Drawing is fundamental to artistic exploration. These terms describe different approaches and techniques you should be able to name.

Gesture Drawing – a quick, loose drawing capturing movement, posture, or the essence of the subject. Not concerned with detail.

Primary Colours – red, yellow, and blue. These hues cannot be mixed from other colours.

Composition is the arrangement of elements within the picture plane. Using correct terminology shows you understand how artworks are constructed.

Rule of Thirds – a compositional guideline that divides the frame into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing key elements along these lines or intersections creates a balanced, dynamic image.

Art has its own grammar. Fluency in these terms shows you can ‘read’ and ‘write’ visually with sophistication.

Symbolism – the use of visual objects to represent abstract ideas. A wilting flower might symbolise mortality; a dove, peace.
