📚 AS OCR Art: Core Knowledge Review | AS OCR

AS OCR Art and Design is a course that balances personal creativity with rigorous analytical thinking. Students are expected to develop a portfolio and respond to an externally set assignment, all while demonstrating the four Assessment Objectives (AOs) that underpin the qualification. This article brings together the essential knowledge every AS learner needs to consolidate: from visual language and material exploration to critical reflection and contextual awareness. Mastering these fundamentals will not only help you structure your projects confidently but also deepen the artistic identity you present to the examiner.

1. Understanding the Assessment Objectives (AOs) |

The four AOs form the backbone of all OCR Art and Design qualifications. AO1 (Develop) requires you to generate ideas through sustained investigation, informed by contextual sources and demonstrate critical understanding. AO2 (Explore) asks you to experiment with resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining work as it progresses. AO3 (Record) focuses on documenting observations, insights and intentions, with reflective commentary. AO4 (Present) calls for a personal, meaningful final response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

AO Focus Weighting (AS)
AO1 Develop ideas through investigation and critical understanding 25%
AO2 Explore and refine media, materials and processes 25%
AO3 Record ideas, observations and reflect critically 25%
AO4 Present a personal, meaningful response 25%

2. Component 01: Personal Investigation |

This portfolio-based component accounts for 60% of the AS grade. You will produce a body of work developed from a starting point of your choice, guided by your teacher. The investigation must show a journey: initial research, experimentation with media, critical analysis of artists’ work, recording of observations, and the evolution of a final outcome. Every piece of work, including sketchbooks, studies, trials and final pieces, contributes to the evidence for the four AOs. The project is not about a single polished artwork but about the documented process of exploration and refinement.

3. Component 02: Externally Set Task |

Worth 40% of the AS marks, the Externally Set Task (EST) is released by OCR in January. You choose one starting point from a set of themes or stimuli. You then have a preparatory period, typically several weeks, to research, develop and experiment in your sketchbook and on prep sheets, followed by a 10-hour controlled assessment during which you produce a final outcome. The preparatory work must be submitted alongside the supervised work. The EST tests your ability to respond to a given brief independently while applying the same AOs.

4. Visual Elements and Principles of Design |

A confident command of visual elements – line, tone, colour, shape, form, texture, pattern and space – is essential for analysing artworks and creating your own. Design principles such as balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, scale and unity help you structure compositions with intention. When annotating your work or discussing an artist, use these terms precisely. For example, explain how a painter uses high contrast between light and dark tones to create a dramatic focal point, or how a sculptor repeats curved forms to generate a sense of organic rhythm.

5. Drawing and Mark-Making as Core Skills |

Drawing is not only a way of recording what you see; it is a thinking tool. AS portfolios must demonstrate a range of drawing purposes: observational studies from primary sources, analytical drawings that break down structure, expressive mark-making that conveys mood, and developmental sketches that explore composition options. Experiment with dry media (graphite, charcoal, pastel, coloured pencil), wet media (ink, watercolour, acrylic washes) and mixed approaches. Quality of line, pressure sensitivity, direction and density of marks all communicate intention. Show that you can move beyond mere copying towards personal interpretation.

6. Material Exploration and Process Refinement |

AO2 explicitly rewards experimentation. Work with at least two distinct media areas – for instance, painting and printmaking, or sculpture and digital photography – to show breadth. Document every stage: initial sampling, failed trials, surprising successes and adaptations. Describe why you selected a particular technique, how you modified it, and what effect it had on your imagery. A strong body of exploration might include lino cuts with registration tests, layering experiments in Photoshop, plaster casting with embedded objects, or monoprinting using oil-based inks. Refinement means you do not stop at the first attempt but push the process further based on evaluation.

7. Contextual Research and Artist Analysis |

Contextual sources give your work intellectual grounding. Study practitioners from different times and cultures, and use their techniques or conceptual approaches as a springboard, not a copy. Structure your analysis: begin with factual information (title, date, medium, dimensions), then describe what you see using visual language, interpret the meaning or message, and evaluate how relevant techniques or ideas can inform your own practice. Look beyond well-known Western artists to include craftspeople, designers, photographers and architects from global contexts. OCR values the ability to make connections between seemingly unrelated creative fields.

8. Critical Reflection and Annotation |

Annotations are not afterthoughts; they are integral evidence for AO1 and AO3. Use them to explain your intentions, evaluate your decision-making, and link to your research. Write in the first person and be specific – avoid statements like ‘I like this drawing’. Instead, say ‘I used cross-hatching with a 4B pencil to create depth in the eye socket, which draws attention to the emotion of the sitter. This method was inspired by Kathe Kollwitz’s self-portraits.’ Regular, honest evaluation of what is and is not working demonstrates reflective practice, a key discriminator at higher marks.

9. Recording from Primary and Secondary Sources |

Primary sources – direct observation of people, landscapes, objects and spaces – are essential for AO3. Work from life as much as possible: figure drawing sessions, still-life set-ups, on-location photographs you have taken yourself. Secondary sources such as found images, museum visits and online archives are acceptable but must be acknowledged and transformed, not simply reproduced. Blending primary and secondary research shows you can curate a range of stimuli. Always reference provenance; critical analysis of a secondary image is far more creditworthy than a tracing.

10. Presenting a Personal and Meaningful Response |

AO4 is about synthesis. Your final outcome should not be a sudden leap at the end of the project but a logical conclusion of all the exploration you have undertaken. It might be a single resolved piece, a series of related works, a film, a installation maquette, or a digital portfolio. The connection between your preparatory studies and the final piece must be evident and explained. Annotations and thumbnail plans can clarify how your intentions evolved. Strong final responses often combine multiple techniques discovered during exploration, showing sophistication and depth.

11. Sketchbook as a Thinking Journal |

Your sketchbook or digital equivalent is the engine room of your project. It should be visually rich, full of drawings, painted studies, material swatches, printed research, trial compositions and handwritten notes. Avoid decorating pages purely for aesthetic effect; every page must show purposeful development. Use arrows, boxes and connectors to visually narrate your creative journey. A well-kept sketchbook allows an examiner to trace your critical path from initial ideas to final realisation. It is evidence of sustained focus and intellectual curiosity.

12. Health, Safety and Professional Practice |

Although not a separate AO, safe working practices are fundamental. You must know how to handle materials responsibly: fixative sprays in ventilated areas, safe use of craft knives and printmaking presses, correct lifting techniques for heavy materials, and proper disposal of solvents. Risk assessments for specific techniques should be documented in your portfolio where relevant. Additionally, present your work professionally: mount or photograph to a high standard, ensure digital submissions are correctly formatted, and label all files clearly. These details communicate respect for your practice and your audience.
