1. Population Dynamics |

The size and structure of a population are determined by birth rate, death rate and migration. The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) shows how population growth changes as a country develops, moving through five stages from high fluctuating birth and death rates to a period of low fluctuating rates – and, in some interpretations, a stage of natural decrease.

In Stage 2 (early expanding), death rates fall sharply owing to improved healthcare and sanitation, while birth rates remain high, causing rapid population growth. Many least developed countries are in this stage, leading to youthful population structures shown by wide-based population pyramids.

Stage 4 (low fluctuating) is typical of developed nations, where both rates are low and the population pyramid is more rectangular, indicating an ageing population. Dependency ratios shift from a large young dependent group to a growing elderly dependent group, creating new challenges for healthcare and pensions.

Overpopulation occurs when there are too many people for the resources available, such as in parts of Nigeria; under-population means resources are underused because of a shortage of people, as in Canada. Both concepts are relative to the resource base and level of technology.

2. Migration | 迁移

Migration is the permanent or semi-permanent movement of people from one place to another. Movement into an area is immigration; movement out is emigration. Net migration is the difference between the two, and it can be positive or negative, significantly altering population totals and structures.

Push factors are negative conditions that drive people away from their origin, such as unemployment, war, natural disasters and poor healthcare. Pull factors are the attractions of a destination, including job opportunities, higher wages, political stability and better education.

International migration from Mexico to the USA highlights both benefits (remittances sent home, reduced pressure on services) and problems (family separation, loss of skilled workers) for the source country. For the host country, it can fill labour shortages but may also increase pressure on housing and public services.

Internal migration, such as rural-to-urban movement in China, fuels rapid urbanisation. Millions have moved from countryside to cities for factory work, reshaping the population distribution and creating megacities like Shanghai and Shenzhen, with both economic opportunities and challenges like pollution and overcrowding.

3. Settlement and Urbanisation |

Settlements vary in size and function. The settlement hierarchy ranks them from isolated dwellings and hamlets up to villages, towns, cities and conurbations. Higher-order settlements, like cities, provide a wider range of goods and services and have larger spheres of influence, while lower-order places offer only basic services.

The Burgess model (concentric zone model) describes urban land use in a city with rings moving outward from the Central Business District (CBD): transition zone, inner city, inner suburbs and outer suburbs. It was based on Chicago and assumes a flat terrain and older industrial city.

The Hoyt model (sector model) adds that land use also develops in sectors along transport routes; industry and lower-class housing follow railways and rivers, while high-class residential areas expand along high ground or scenic routes. Modern cities often combine elements of both models, and in many developing cities, informal settlements and shanty towns occupy marginal land.

Urbanisation is the increase in the proportion of people living in towns and cities. Causes include rural-urban migration and natural population growth. In many developing countries, urbanisation is happening at an unprecedented rate, leading to challenges such as housing shortages, traffic congestion and inadequate sanitation; but it also promotes economic growth and cultural exchange.

4. Plate Tectonics and Associated Hazards |

The Earth’s crust is divided into tectonic plates that move on the semi-molten mantle. Convection currents in the mantle, driven by heat from the core, are the main driving force. Plates interact at boundaries: constructive (divergent), destructive (convergent), conservative (transform) and collision zones.

At constructive boundaries (e.g., Mid-Atlantic Ridge), plates move apart, and magma rises to form new crust, creating mid-ocean ridges and shield volcanoes. Earthquakes here are generally shallow and less violent. At destructive boundaries, an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continental plate (e.g., Peru–Chile Trench), forming deep-sea trenches, fold mountains and composite volcanoes with explosive eruptions.

At collision zones, two continental plates collide (e.g., Himalayas), and since neither subducts easily, they crumple upwards to form fold mountains. Conservative boundaries, like the San Andreas Fault, see plates sliding past each other; stress builds up and is released as shallow, frequently destructive earthquakes.

The impacts of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes depend on both the magnitude of the event and the vulnerability of the population. Responses include prediction, preparation (e.g., earthquake-resistant buildings, drills) and short-term relief followed by long-term rehabilitation. Case studies such as the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake in Japan illustrate multi-hazard impacts, including tsunami and nuclear crisis.

5. Rivers and Fluvial Processes |

Rivers shape the landscape through erosion, transportation and deposition. The four types of erosion are hydraulic action, abrasion (corrasion), attrition and solution (corrosion). The load is transported by traction, saltation, suspension and solution. The competence and capacity of a river grow as discharge increases downstream.

In the upper course, vertical erosion dominates, forming V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs and waterfalls. A waterfall forms where a band of hard rock overlies softer rock; the soft rock is eroded by abrasion and hydraulic action, undercutting the hard cap rock, which eventually collapses and retreats, leaving a steep-sided gorge.

In the middle and lower courses, lateral erosion widens the valley. Meanders develop as the thalweg swings from side to side, eroding the outer concave bank and depositing on the inner convex bank, forming point bars. Over time, meanders become more sinuous, and when a meander is cut off by a neck, an oxbow lake is left behind.

Levees and floodplains are built by repeated flooding. When a river spills over its banks, friction slows the water, causing coarse sediment to be deposited immediately on the banks, building natural levees, while finer silt settles across the floodplain, creating fertile soils ideal for agriculture, as seen along the River Nile.

6. Coastal Processes and Landforms |

Coasts are shaped by waves, tides and currents. Destructive waves are high, plunging and frequent, with a strong backwash that erodes the beach. Constructive waves are low, surging and less frequent, with a strong swash that deposits material to build up the beach.

Coastal erosion processes include hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution. These processes create landforms such as headlands and bays, cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks and stumps. A stack forms when a cave is eroded through a headland to form an arch, which then collapses, leaving an isolated pillar of rock.

Longshore drift is the movement of sediment along the coast. Waves hit the beach at an angle, pushing material up the beach (swash); gravity then pulls it straight back down (backwash). This zigzag pattern transports sand and pebbles parallel to the shore, building beaches, spits and bars. A spit is a long, narrow ridge of sand or shingle extending from the shore, often with a hooked end.

Coastal management strategies divide into hard engineering (sea walls, groynes, rock armour) and soft engineering (beach nourishment, dune stabilisation, managed retreat). Hard structures are often costly and can transfer erosion down-drift, while soft approaches work with natural processes and can be more sustainable but require ongoing maintenance.

7. Weather, Climate and Ecosystems |

Weather is the day-to-day condition of the atmosphere, while climate is the average weather over a long period. Climate graphs combine temperature and precipitation data and are essential for identifying climate types. The tropical rainforest climate is hot and wet all year, with a small annual temperature range and heavy convectional rainfall.

The tropical rainforest ecosystem is characterised by high biodiversity, a dense canopy structure and rapid nutrient cycling. However, the soil is typically red, leached and infertile because heavy rainfall washes away nutrients. Deforestation through logging, slash-and-burn farming and cattle ranching – for example in the Amazon – leads to loss of biodiversity, reduced rainfall recycling and increased carbon dioxide levels.

Hot deserts are found between about 15° and 30° north and south of the equator, where descending air creates high pressure and aridity. Soils are sandy or stony with low organic content. Plants and animals, such as the saguaro cactus and camel, have adapted to conserve water and tolerate extreme temperature ranges. Desertification threatens the Sahel owing to overgrazing, deforestation and climate variability.

8. Development and Human Welfare |

Development measures the economic, social and political progress of a country. Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is a common economic indicator but hides inequalities. The Human Development Index (HDI) combines income, life expectancy and education to give a broader picture of well-being.

There is a wide development gap between high-income countries (HICs) and low-income countries (LICs). Factors contributing to the gap include historical colonialism, debt, unfair trade, climate vulnerability and poor governance. The Brandt Line visually divides the more developed ‘North’ from the less developed ‘South’, though fast-growing economies like China blur this line.

International strategies to reduce the development gap include aid (short-term and long-term), fair trade initiatives and debt relief. At the national scale, investment in education, infrastructure and healthcare, as well as attracting foreign direct investment, can stimulate economic growth. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set a global framework for reducing poverty and inequality whilst protecting the environment.

9. Food Production and Agriculture |

Farming systems range from subsistence (growing for the family’s needs) to commercial (producing for sale). Inputs include physical factors (climate, soil, relief) and human factors (labour, capital, technology). Processes include ploughing, sowing, weeding and harvesting, and outputs are crops and animal products.

Intensive farming achieves high yields per hectare by using high inputs of labour or capital (e.g., market gardening in the Netherlands, rice farming in the Ganges delta). Extensive farming covers large areas with low inputs per hectare, such as sheep ranching in Australia. Organic farming avoids synthetic chemicals, aiming for environmental sustainability but often with lower yields.

Food security exists when all people always have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. Causes of food shortage include population growth, soil erosion, climate change, water scarcity and conflict. The Green Revolution increased crop yields in countries like India through high-yielding varieties, irrigation and agrochemicals, but it also created environmental problems such as soil degradation and water pollution.

10. Water and Energy Resources |

Fresh water is an essential but unevenly distributed resource. Areas of water surplus, like the Amazon basin, contrast with water deficit regions, like the Middle East. Water transfer schemes, such as China’s South–North Water Transfer Project, move water from areas of surplus to deficit, but can cause environmental and social conflicts.

Energy resources are classified as non-renewable (fossil fuels, nuclear) and renewable (solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, biomass). The global energy mix is still dominated by oil, coal and gas, which release greenhouse gases when burned. Fracking for shale gas has expanded supplies but raises concerns about groundwater contamination and minor earthquakes.

Sustainable energy management involves increasing the share of renewables, improving energy efficiency and reducing consumption. Case studies of Norway, which generates most of its electricity from hydropower, and Kenya, which leads in geothermal energy in Africa, show how countries can harness local resources to move towards a low-carbon future.
