📚 GCSE Cambridge History: High-Frequency Topics & Common Mistakes Analysis | GCSE Cambridge

The Cambridge IGCSE History syllabus (0470) challenges students to engage critically with key events of the twentieth century. Success depends on mastering selected core topics and a depth study, but equally on avoiding the common errors that repeatedly catch out candidates. This article identifies the high-frequency topics that appear in almost every examination session, alongside an analysis of the mistakes that prevent students from achieving top grades. Whether you are revising international relations 1919–1939, the Cold War, or a depth study such as Russia 1905–1941, paying close attention to exam technique and source-handling skills will make a decisive difference.

1. Exam Format Overview |

The Cambridge IGCSE History syllabus (0470) is divided into two compulsory examined components. Paper 1 (2 hours) focuses on core content: international relations from 1919 to the end of the Cold War, and requires answers to structured questions. These include knowledge-based short-answer items, as well as extended writing tasks that test explanation and analysis. Paper 2 (2 hours) is source-based. Candidates must answer questions that demand inference, cross-referencing, and evaluation of reliability and utility. Some schools also submit coursework, but the majority of candidates follow the examination-only route. An early appreciation of the mark schemes, command words, and question formats drastically improves exam readiness.

Time management is one of the most underrated skills in the exam. In Paper 1, spend no more than 35 minutes on a 10-mark essay, leaving sufficient time for the other questions. In Paper 2, use the insertion booklet strategically, annotating sources before you start writing full answers. Practising with past papers under timed conditions is essential.

2. High-Frequency Topic: The Treaty of Versailles |

The Treaty of Versailles, signed in June 1919, stands as a compulsory topic. Examiners regularly test knowledge of the ‘Big Three’ – Clemenceau, Lloyd George and Wilson – and their conflicting aims. French demands for security and revenge clashed with Wilson’s idealistic Fourteen Points, while Britain looked for a middle ground that would preserve trade. Key treaty terms: the War Guilt Clause (Article 231), territorial losses (Alsace-Lorraine to France, the Polish Corridor, forfeiture of all colonies), military restrictions (army capped at 100,000, no submarines or air force), and reparations eventually set at £6.6 billion. Many candidates can list these terms, but the higher-performance answers explain why they generated lasting bitterness in Germany.

A classic error is to assert that all three leaders left Paris satisfied. In truth, Clemenceau faced domestic criticism for not pushing the frontier to the Rhine, Lloyd George feared a future German recovery, and Wilson was forced to abandon many of his principles. Also, distinguish carefully between the demilitarisation of the Rhineland (permanent) and the 15-year League administration of the Saar. In source papers, cartoons depicting a ‘Carthaginian peace’ are frequently set: always identify the cartoonist’s viewpoint rather than simply narrating the image.

3. High-Frequency Topic: The League of Nations in the 1920s and 1930s | 高频考点:1920 年代与 1930 年代的国际联盟

The League of Nations appears both in questions about its early successes and, more frequently, about its failures to stop aggression. Successful interventions in the 1920s included the Aaland Islands, Upper Silesia, and the Greco-Bulgarian dispute. Humanitarian achievements, such as the repatriation of prisoners of war and work against disease and slavery, are often overlooked by candidates but can provide balanced arguments. The catastrophic failures of the 1930s – the Manchurian Crisis (1931–33) and the Abyssinian Crisis (1935–36) – exposed the League’s structural weaknesses.
