📚 GCSE Cambridge Philosophy: Case Study Practice Drills |

Case study questions form the heart of the GCSE Cambridge Philosophy exam. They test not just your knowledge of theories but your ability to apply abstract ideas to concrete scenarios, construct well-reasoned arguments, and critically evaluate different viewpoints. This article walks you through practical drills designed to sharpen your analytical skills and boost your confidence under timed conditions. We will explore classic thought experiments, demonstrate how to unpack them, and model exam-ready responses.

1. How to Approach a Case Study |

Before diving into specific examples, you must establish a clear method. Read the scenario twice. On your first pass, underline the key agents, actions, and consequences. On your second, annotate the philosophical issues that jump out – is it an ethical dilemma, a problem about knowledge, or a question about identity? This initial mapping prevents you from missing crucial details and helps you structure your response around the core philosophical tension.

Once you have identified the central issue, quickly recall the relevant theories and thinkers. Make a mental note of at least two contrasting positions. For example, in an ethical case, you might contrast utilitarianism and deontology. In a case about personal identity, you might pit psychological continuity against bodily continuity. The ability to generate a balanced discussion directly from the prompt is what separates high-band answers from mediocre ones.

Finally, plan your paragraph structure. A strong answer typically contains: a concise introduction stating the issue, a paragraph presenting the first theoretical perspective with application to the case, a paragraph presenting the counter-perspective, and a conclusion that makes a justified judgement. Time management is key, so allocate roughly 2 minutes to plan and 8 minutes to write for a 10-mark question.

2. Identifying Key Concepts |

Philosophical case studies are rarely about a single concept in isolation. You must learn to spot how concepts interlock. If a scenario involves a scientist scanning a brain and uploading consciousness to a computer, you are dealing simultaneously with the mind-body problem, personal identity, and possibly the ethics of technology. Practice by taking a newspaper headline or a short story and listing as many philosophical branches as you can connect to it.

Some concepts appear repeatedly: the is-ought gap, free will versus determinism, realism versus anti-realism, the nature of justification, and the sources of moral value. When you encounter a new scenario, ask yourself: is this about what is true (metaphysics), how we know (epistemology), or what we should do (ethics)? This triage will quickly orient your thinking and prevent category mistakes in your essay.

3. Case 1: The Trolley Problem – Ethical Theories |

Imagine a runaway trolley is speeding towards five people tied to the track. You are standing next to a lever that can divert the trolley onto a side track, where one person is tied. Do nothing and five die; pull the lever and one dies. This is the classic ‘switch’ version of the trolley problem, introduced by Philippa Foot. Use it to compare consequentialist and deontological reasoning.

Utilitarianism argues you should pull the lever. Jeremy Bentham’s principle of utility demands we maximise pleasure and minimise pain for all affected. Sacrificing one to save five produces the greatest net happiness. John Stuart Mill would refine this by considering the quality of pleasures, but the basic arithmetic remains: five lives saved are a better outcome than one life lost. Thus, the morally right action is to actively switch the trolley.

Kantian deontology, on the other hand, would forbid pulling the lever. Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative forbids using a person merely as a means to an end. By pulling the lever, you use the single individual on the side track as a mere tool to save the five, violating their rational autonomy. Furthermore, the maxim ‘it is permissible to sacrifice an innocent person to save a greater number’ cannot be universalised without contradiction, as it would undermine the very notion of inviolable human dignity. For a Kantian, you must not pull the lever; your duty is to refrain from committing murder, even for a good outcome.

4. Case 2: Ship of Theseus – Identity and Change |

The Athenians preserved the ship of the hero Theseus by replacing its rotten planks one by one. Over time, every original plank was replaced. Is the fully restored ship still the same Ship of Theseus? Then imagine collecting all the discarded planks and reconstructing them into a second ship. Which, if either, is the original? This puzzle tests our understanding of identity over time.

The mereological view, often associated with materialist metaphysics, claims that an object’s identity is tied to its constituent parts. Since all parts have been replaced, the restored ship is a new object, numerically distinct from the original. However, this leads to a paradox: if the reconstructed ship from discarded planks has all the original parts, it would seem to be the original. Yet our intuition rebels against the idea that a disassembled pile of planks could suddenly become the ‘real’ ship while the continuously sailing vessel is a replica.

A more convincing approach is the spatio-temporal continuity theory, which defines identity through an unbroken history. The restored ship has maintained continuous existence through gradual part replacement, without an instantaneous moment of destruction and re-creation. Therefore, it is the same ship. The reconstructed pile, despite having the original bits, lacks the right causal history; it is a replica. This theory is crucial when you apply identity puzzles to personal identity: are you the same person if your cells are gradually replaced over seven years? Most philosophers answer yes because of psychological or bodily continuity, not material sameness.

5. Case 3: Plato’s Cave – Reality and Knowledge |

In Plato’s allegory, prisoners have been chained since childhood facing a blank cave wall. Behind them burns a fire, and between the fire and the prisoners, puppeteers carry objects that cast shadows on the wall. The prisoners mistake these shadows for reality. If one were freed and forced to turn around, his eyes would hurt; he would first believe the puppets are less real than the shadows. Eventually, he might ascend out of the cave into the sunlight and see the true forms of things. The case study tasks you with explaining what this reveals about knowledge and reality.

Plato’s core claim is that the sensible world is a realm of imperfect copies, while true reality consists of the Forms – eternal, unchanging paradigms like Justice, Beauty, and Equality. The prisoners represent ordinary people trapped in ignorance, trusting sense experience alone. The journey out of the cave symbolises the philosopher’s education, moving from mere belief (doxa) to genuine knowledge (episteme) through reason. The sun stands for the Form of the Good, which illuminates all other Forms and is the ultimate source of knowledge.

When analysing this case, you should address its epistemological implications: can we trust our senses? Plato says no, because sense data give us only shadows. In contrast, empiricists like John Locke argue that all knowledge originates from sense experience, though Locke distinguishes primary qualities (solidity, extension, motion) existing independently of the perceiver, from secondary qualities (colour, taste) that are mind-dependent. Bring this contrast into your answer to show evaluation. You might also consider whether the allegory remains relevant today, for instance in debates about virtual reality or media manipulation.

6. Case 4: Mary’s Room – The Knowledge Argument |

Mary is a brilliant neuroscientist who has spent her entire life in a black-and-white room. She knows every physical fact about colour vision: the wavelengths, the retinal processes, the brain states involved. One day she steps outside and sees a red rose for the first time. Philosopher Frank Jackson asks: does Mary learn something new? If she does, physicalism – the view that all facts are physical facts – is false, because she already knew all physical facts yet gained new knowledge.

Dualists use this thought experiment to support the existence of qualia – the subjective, qualitative aspects of conscious experience. Seeing red gives Mary a ‘what-it-is-like’ knowledge that no amount of physical description could convey. This suggests consciousness has non-physical properties. It is a powerful challenge to reductionist explanations of the mind. In your case study answer, explain qualia clearly and why they create an explanatory gap between objective science and subjective experience.

Physicalists respond in several ways. The ability reply argues that Mary does not learn a new fact but acquires a new ability, such as the ability to imagine, recognise, and remember red. The phenomenal concept strategy accepts that Mary gains a new concept – a phenomenal concept – but insists this concept still refers to a physical brain state. These replies try to save physicalism while acknowledging the special character of conscious experience. A top-band answer will present both sides and conclude by evaluating which escape route is more persuasive.

7. Case 5: The Problem of Evil – Theodicies |

The problem of evil is a frequent case study in philosophy of religion. Consider a world where a child dies painfully of a preventable disease. If God is all-powerful, He could prevent it; if all-loving, He would want to. Yet evil exists. The logical form of the problem claims that the coexistence of a perfectly good, all-powerful God and evil is logically impossible. The evidential form argues that the amount and distribution of evil make God’s existence highly improbable.

The free will defence is a direct response. It maintains that God gave humans free will because a world with morally significant free choices is far more valuable than a world of automata. Moral evil – harm caused by human choices – results from the misuse of that freedom, for which humans, not God, are responsible. To intervene every time would undermine genuine freedom. This defence handles moral evil well but struggles with natural evil, like earthquakes and diseases, which do not obviously arise from free choices.

Augustine’s theodicy argues that evil is not a positive substance but a privation of good, like a shadow is the absence of light. Since God created all things good, evil entered through the fall of angels and humankind, disrupting the original order. In contrast, Irenaeus’s soul-making theodicy sees evil as necessary for spiritual development; hardships enable humans to grow into the likeness of God through freely choosing good over evil. When answering a case study, apply one theodicy and then critically assess whether it offers a satisfying explanation for the specific suffering described in the scenario.

8. Building a Balanced Argument |

Examiners reward you for presenting a balanced discussion, not a one-sided rant. One effective method is the PEELX structure: Point, Evidence from the case, Explanation of theory, Link back to the question, and eXplicit evaluation. For example, when discussing Mary’s room, you might state: ‘A dualist would claim Mary learns something new (Point). When she leaves the room, her exclamation “So this is what red looks like!” (Evidence) demonstrates the existence of qualia beyond physical facts. This challenges physicalism because it shows subjective experience cannot be captured by objective description alone (Explanation). Therefore, the case supports property dualism (Link). However, this argument assumes Mary’s prior knowledge was truly complete and that her reaction reflects a new fact rather than a new way of knowing – a point physicalists seize upon (Evaluation).’

Weighing arguments involves evaluating the strength of premises. Ask yourself: does this theory have any hidden assumptions? Does it rely on intuitions that might vary across people? For example, in the trolley problem, the Kantian prohibition relies on a commitment to absolute dignity that some may find less compelling than the clear benefit of saving lives. Explicitly stating these comparative judgements shows critical thinking at the highest level.

9. Exam Technique and Common Pitfalls |

A major pitfall is recounting the story without analysis. Never merely paraphrase the case study; you are expected to extract the philosophical conflict and dissect it. Another common error is name-dropping without function. Mentioning ‘Kant’ earns no credit unless you explain the relevant aspect of his theory and connect it specifically to details in the scenario. Vague statements like ‘A utilitarian would agree’ are insufficient; say ‘A utilitarian, who holds that an action is right if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number, would argue that pulling the lever is obligatory because it results in five lives saved against one lost.’

Time management is critical in GCSE Philosophy. For a typical 10-mark case study question, aim to write two to three developed paragraphs that present contrasting views and a concluding evaluative judgement. Do not spend too long on a single theory. Practice writing timed plans using past papers – reduce a full case scenario to bullet points of: key philosophical issue, theory A with application, theory B with application, critical comparison, conclusion.

10. Practice Prompts and Summary |

To build fluency, create your own mini case studies. For instance: ‘A self-driving car must choose between hitting a pedestrian or swerving and killing its passenger.’ Take five minutes to identify the ethical theories at play (utilitarian optimisation, agent-relative duties, the responsibility gap) and draft a PEELX paragraph. Another prompt: ‘A scientist creates a perfect duplicate of you, atom for atom. Is the duplicate you?’ This lets you rehearse arguments about psychological continuity, duplication problems, and the transitivity of identity. Regular, focused practice with such drills will make the exam familiar ground.

The key to excelling in GCSE Cambridge Philosophy case studies is disciplined, structured thinking. Treat every scenario as an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of both classic and contemporary philosophical positions, your ability to apply them with precision, and your courage to evaluate them fairly. Revisit the cases in this article, write out full answers, and critically compare them against the model structures suggested. Philosophy rewards depth and clarity, not mere opinion.
