1. Population Growth and Change |

World population has grown rapidly since the Industrial Revolution, currently exceeding 8 billion. The rate of natural increase is calculated as birth rate minus death rate, usually expressed per 1000 people per year. When birth rates significantly exceed death rates, the population grows quickly. Many low-income countries (LICs) are still in the earlier stages of population growth, while many high-income countries (HICs) have very low or negative natural increase.

The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) describes how birth and death rates change as a country develops. Stage 1 has high fluctuating birth and death rates. Stage 2 sees death rates fall while birth rates stay high, leading to rapid growth. In Stage 3 birth rates decline, slowing population growth. Stage 4 has low, stable birth and death rates. A hypothetical Stage 5 shows a natural decrease, as seen in countries like Japan.

2. Migration and Urbanisation |

Migration is the permanent or semi-permanent movement of people. Push factors drive people away from an area (e.g. lack of jobs, war, natural disasters), while pull factors attract them to a destination (e.g. better employment, education, safety). Rural-to-urban migration is a key driver of urbanisation, especially in emerging economies. Internal migration within a country contrasts with international migration, which may be voluntary or forced.

Urbanisation refers to the increasing proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas. Megacities (cities with more than 10 million people) are growing rapidly in Asia and Africa. While urbanisation can boost economic growth, it also creates challenges such as slums, traffic congestion, pollution and pressure on services. Sustainable urban planning and self-help schemes are among the solutions.

3. Settlement Patterns and Land Use |

Settlements form a hierarchy from isolated farmsteads and hamlets to villages, towns and cities. The higher the settlement in the hierarchy, the larger its population, the wider its range of services and the greater its sphere of influence. The location of a settlement is influenced by site factors (wet point, defensive position, flat land) and situation factors (access to trade routes, bridging points).

In urban areas, land use patterns are often explained by models such as the Burgess concentric zone model. The central business district (CBD) is surrounded by a zone of transition, then low-class housing, medium-class housing and finally high-class residential suburbs. In many cities, redevelopment and suburbanisation have altered this pattern. Issues like urban sprawl and inner-city decline require careful land-use planning.

4. Plate Tectonics and Hazards |

The Earth’s crust is divided into tectonic plates that move on the semi-molten mantle. There are three main types of plate boundaries: constructive (divergent), where plates move apart and new crust is formed; destructive (convergent), where an oceanic plate subducts beneath a continental plate, causing volcanoes and earthquakes; and conservative (transform), where plates slide past each other, building friction that triggers earthquakes.

Volcanoes form where magma rises through vents, often at constructive or destructive margins. Shield volcanoes have gentle slopes and runny lava, while composite volcanoes are steep and explosive. Earthquakes release energy as seismic waves; the focus is the point of rupture underground, and the epicentre is the point on the surface directly above it. The Richter scale measures magnitude, while the Mercalli scale measures intensity.

5. River Processes and Landforms |

Rivers erode, transport and deposit material. The four main erosion processes are hydraulic action, abrasion (corrasion), attrition and solution (corrosion). Transportation occurs by traction, saltation, suspension and solution. These processes create distinctive landforms along a river’s course from the upper valley to the mouth.

In the upper course, steep gradients lead to V-shaped valleys, interlocking spurs, waterfalls and gorges. As the river enters its middle and lower courses, lateral erosion widens the valley; meanders develop and can be cut off to form oxbow lakes. Floodplains, levees and deltas in the lower course are products of deposition. Flooding can be managed through hard engineering (dams, levees) and soft engineering (afforestation, zoning).

6. Coastal Processes and Erosion |

Waves are the main agent shaping coastlines. Constructive waves build beaches with strong swash and weak backwash, while destructive waves erode cliffs with weak swash and powerful backwash. Coastal erosion processes include hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution, often linked to wave-cut notches and platforms.

Erosional landforms include headlands and bays, cliffs, wave-cut platforms, caves, arches, stacks and stumps. Depositional landforms feature beaches, spits, bars and tombolos. Coastal management strategies range from hard engineering (sea walls, groynes, rock armour) to soft engineering (beach nourishment, managed retreat). The choice depends on cost, environmental impact and community needs.

7. Weather, Climate and Ecosystems |

Weather describes the short-term state of the atmosphere (temperature, precipitation, wind), while climate is the average weather pattern over at least 30 years. Key climate controls are latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, ocean currents and prevailing winds. The world’s major climate zones, from equatorial to polar, support distinct ecosystems.

Tropical rainforests, found near the Equator, have high temperatures and heavy rainfall all year. The vegetation has adapted with buttress roots, drip-tip leaves and a layered structure. Hot deserts, located around 30° N and S, have extreme temperatures and very low rainfall. Plants such as cacti store water, and animals are often nocturnal. Human activity can stress these ecosystems through deforestation or overgrazing.

8. Development Indicators |

Development is measured through economic, social and composite indicators. GDP per capita is a common economic indicator, but it hides inequalities. Social indicators include life expectancy, literacy rate and infant mortality. The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, education and income to give a broader picture of a country’s development level.

Countries are often grouped as HICs, middle-income countries and LICs, or more recently as more economically developed countries (MEDCs) and less economically developed countries (LEDCs). The development gap is caused by historical factors (colonialism), physical factors (landlocked, harsh climate), economic factors (debt, trade imbalances) and social factors (poor education, healthcare). Tackling the gap requires fair trade, aid and investment.

9. Agricultural Systems and Change |

Agriculture can be classified by input (subsistence vs commercial) and intensity (intensive vs extensive). Subsistence farming produces food mainly for the farmer’s family; commercial farming sells most output for profit. Intensive agriculture uses high inputs of labour or capital per hectare, while extensive farming covers large areas with lower input levels.

The Green Revolution dramatically increased food production through high-yielding varieties (HYVs), chemical fertilisers, pesticides and irrigation. Although it reduced famine in some regions, it also caused environmental damage and social inequality. Sustainable agriculture now promotes organic farming, crop rotation and agroforestry to maintain soil fertility and reduce chemical inputs. Food shortages persist in many areas due to physical constraints, conflict and poverty.

10. Industry and Globalisation |

Industry is categorised into four sectors: primary (extracting raw materials), secondary (manufacturing), tertiary (services) and quaternary (research and information). As a country develops, employment shifts from primary to secondary to tertiary and quaternary. Industrial location depends on factors such as energy, raw materials, labour, market and transport.

Globalisation refers to the increasing interconnectedness of countries through trade, investment and technology. Transnational corporations (TNCs) like those in electronics and fast fashion operate in multiple countries, often locating production where labour costs are low. This creates jobs in LICs but can lead to exploitation and environmental harm. Deindustrialisation in HICs has resulted in job losses, but also growth in quaternary sector employment.

11. Tourism and Environmental Impact |

Tourism has grown rapidly due to higher incomes, more leisure time, improved transport and advertising. Tourism brings economic benefits such as employment, foreign exchange and infrastructure development. However, over-dependence on tourism can make a region vulnerable to economic downturns and seasonal fluctuations.

Mass tourism often causes environmental damage: footpath erosion, waste disposal problems, water shortages and disturbance to wildlife. Social impacts include culture clashes, rising crime and loss of authenticity. Sustainable tourism or ecotourism aims to minimise negative effects by involving local communities, using renewable energy and protecting natural habitats. Examples include small-scale lodges and national park management plans.

12. Energy Resources and Management |

Energy resources are classified as non-renewable (fossil fuels: coal, oil, natural gas; nuclear) and renewable (solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, biomass). Fossil fuels currently dominate the global energy mix but contribute to climate change through carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Nuclear power provides low-carbon electricity but raises safety and waste concerns.

Renewable energy use is increasing, driven by falling costs and environmental concerns. Hydroelectric power (HEP) is a well-established technology, while wind and solar are the fastest growing. Energy management includes conservation, improving efficiency and shifting towards a more sustainable mix. The location of renewable energy projects, such as wind farms, is often influenced by physical geography – high wind speeds, steep valleys for HEP – and by social acceptance.
