This quick-reference handbook presents the core propositions, cause–effect relationships, and key definitions you need to memorise for the CIE GCSE Sociology examination. Each entry is expressed as a clear, formula-like statement that captures the logic of sociological thinking.

1. Functionalism: The Organic Analogy |

Functionalists compare society to a living body in which every institution functions like an organ to maintain stability and consensus.

Society = Organism (Parsons’ Organic Analogy)

Social institutions such as the family, education, and religion work together to meet the system’s needs, just as the heart, lungs, and brain cooperate to keep the body alive.

Social Order = Value Consensus → Socialisation → Integration

Society remains orderly because members share a common set of norms and values (value consensus). Through socialisation, individuals internalise these values, which produces integration and reduces conflict.

Merton distinguished between manifest functions (intended, recognised consequences) and latent functions (unintended but real consequences).

  • Manifest function of education: transmitting knowledge and skills.

  • Latent function of education: keeping young people off the labour market and building peer networks.

2. Marxism: Base and Superstructure |

Marxist theory sees society as structured by class conflict rooted in the economic base. The ruling class controls the means of production and exploits the working class.

Economic Base → Shapes Superstructure (One-way determination)

The base (forces and relations of production) determines the superstructure—all political, legal, educational, and ideological institutions. These institutions reflect ruling-class interests and help maintain capitalism.

Bourgeoisie vs. Proletariat → Class Conflict → Revolution (predicted)

The bourgeoisie (owners) exploit the proletariat (workers) by extracting surplus value. Over time, the proletariat would develop class consciousness and overthrow capitalism, leading to a communist society.

Althusser extended this by describing ideological state apparatuses (e.g. education, media, religion) that reproduce capitalist relations without needing direct force.

3. Feminism: Patriarchy as a Structure |

Feminist perspectives argue that society is structured by patriarchy—a system of male dominance that operates across all institutions.

Patriarchy = Institutionalised Male Power

Patriarchy is not just individual sexism; it is embedded in the family, workplace, education, media, and the state. It systematically advantages men and disadvantages women.

Liberal feminists focus on legal and social reforms to achieve equal opportunities. Radical feminists see patriarchy as the fundamental division in society and advocate for revolutionary change, often highlighting the role of the family and sexuality in maintaining male power.

Gender ≠ Sex (Socially constructed roles)

Sex refers to biological differences; gender refers to culturally constructed norms of masculinity and femininity. Feminists emphasise that gender roles are learned, not natural.

4. Interactionism: The Looking-Glass Self |

Interactionists focus on micro-level, face-to-face interactions and how individuals create meaning through symbols and interpretation.

Self = Reflection of Others’ Perceptions (Cooley’s Looking-Glass Self)

We develop our self-concept by imagining how we appear to others, imagining their judgement of that appearance, and developing a self-feeling such as pride or shame.

Mead distinguished between the ‘I’ (the spontaneous, autonomous self) and the ‘Me’ (the internalised expectations of society). Role-taking allows individuals to see themselves from the standpoint of the community.

Definition of the Situation → Behaviour (Thomas theorem)

If people define situations as real, they are real in their consequences. A pupil labelled as ‘troublesome’ may internalise that label and act accordingly—a process at the heart of labelling theory.

5. Weber: Social Action and Verstehen |

Max Weber argued that sociology must interpret the subjective meanings individuals attach to their actions. He offered a multi-dimensional view of stratification, going beyond class.

Social Action = Meaningful Behaviour Oriented to Others

Weber identified four types of social action: instrumental-rational, value-rational, affective, and traditional. To explain action, sociologists must use verstehen—empathetic understanding.

Stratification = Class (wealth) + Status (social honour) + Party (power)

Unlike Marx’s pure class model, Weber argued that status groups (based on lifestyle and prestige) and parties (organised groups seeking power) can independently shape life chances.

6. Research Methods: Validity, Reliability, Representativeness |

All sociological research aims to produce knowledge, but its value depends on methodological rigour. The key criteria form a ‘formula’ for judging research quality.

Validity = Truthfulness (the extent to which a method measures what it claims to measure)

High-validity data provide an authentic picture of social reality. Qualitative methods (unstructured interviews, participant observation) tend to have high ecological validity but lower reliability.

Reliability = Replicability + Consistency

A reliable method produces similar results when repeated under the same conditions. Structured questionnaires and official statistics are highly reliable but may lack depth.

Representativeness = Sample → Population (Generalisability)

A representative sample mirrors the characteristics of the target population, allowing generalisations. Random sampling helps achieve this, but practical difficulties often lead to sampling frames and non-response bias.

7. Socialization: Primary and Secondary |

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the culture of their society. It is the ‘programming’ that makes social order possible.

Primary Socialisation → Internalisation of Core Norms (Family)

In early childhood, the family transmits language, basic values, and gender roles. This lays the foundation for the self and for later social learning.

Secondary Socialisation → Learning Institutional Rules (School, Peers, Media)

Agents like schools teach the hidden curriculum—punctuality, obedience, and competition. The peer group offers opportunities to practise independence, while the media transmits cultural scripts.

A failure in socialisation can lead to deviance or anomie. Resocialisation can occur in total institutions such as prisons or the military.

8. Family: Nuclear Family as Universal? |

Families vary across cultures, but sociologists have proposed key functions and forms. The debate centres on whether the nuclear family is uniquely suited to industrial society.

Nuclear Family = Two-generational (Parents + Children) Unit

Murdock claimed the nuclear family is universal because it fulfills four essential functions: sexual, reproductive, economic, and educational. Parsons saw the isolated nuclear family as the best ‘fit’ for industrial society, providing a stabilisation of adult personalities.

Family Diversity ≠ Breakdown (Postmodern View)

Contemporary family forms—lone-parent, reconstituted, same-sex, and extended—represent adaptation, not crisis. Feminist critiques point out that the family can also be a site of gender inequality and domestic violence.

9. Education: Cultural Capital |

Education is meant to promote meritocracy, but sociologists reveal how it often reproduces class inequalities. Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital is a key explanatory ‘tool’.

Cultural Capital = Non-economic Resources (Knowledge, Taste, Language) → Educational Advantage

Middle-class children enter school already possessing the dominant culture’s codes—language, manners, and cultural references. This cultural capital is rewarded in the education system, converting into qualifications (embodied and institutionalised capital).

Material Factors + Cultural Factors → Unequal Attainment

Working-class underachievement is explained by both material deprivation (poor housing, lack of resources) and cultural deprivation (immediate gratification, restricted language code, as Bernstein argued).

Willis showed how working-class ‘lads’ actively resisted school culture but, ironically, that resistance prepared them for working-class jobs.

10. Crime and Deviance: Anomie and Strain Theory |

Deviance is any behaviour that violates social norms. Functionalist and subcultural theories provide ‘formulaic’ explanations of why people break rules.

Anomie → Normlessness → Deviance (Durkheim)

When rapid social change disrupts the collective conscience, individuals lack clear moral guidance, leading to anomie and higher rates of deviance and suicide.

Strain Theory: Cultural Goals vs. Legitimate Means → Anomie → Deviance (Merton)

American society emphasises the goal of material success but does not provide equal access to legitimate means. This strain produces five adaptations: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion.

Labelling theory (Becker) adds that deviance is not inherent in an act but is the result of the application of rules and sanctions by others. Once labelled, an individual may enter a deviant career.

11. Social Stratification: Life Chances |

Stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of social groups based on class, status, and power. The concept of life chances quantifies the inequality produced by stratification.

Life Chances = Opportunities to Access Valued Goods (Health, Education, Income)

Weber introduced the term to denote the odds an individual has of achieving a high quality of life. Your social class powerfully predicts your health, educational success, and even life expectancy.

Closed Society: Ascription → Caste/Status → Fixed Position

In a closed stratification system (e.g. a caste system or extreme traditional class system), social position is ascribed at birth and mobility is minimal. In open systems (meritocracies), achieved status supposedly determines position, but sociologists show that ascribed characteristics still heavily influence outcomes.

12. The Media: Agenda Setting |

The mass media are not neutral mirrors; they actively shape public perception. Agenda setting and the construction of news are core ‘equations’ of media sociology.

Media → Agenda Setting → Framing → Public Perception

By deciding which issues to cover and how to present them, the media tell the public not just what to think, but what to think about. The repetition of certain frames can create moral panics (Cohen), amplifying deviance.

News = Selection + Construction (Gatekeeping)

News is not found but made. Gatekeepers (editors, owners) select events based on news values—extraordinariness, negativity, elite persons, personalisation, etc. The result is a socially constructed version of reality.

Pluralists see the media as responding to audience demand, while Marxists argue that media content reflects the ideologies of the ruling class and hegemonically secures consent.
