1. Understanding the CCEA A2 Aural Paper | 理解 CCEA A2 听力试卷

The A2 2 Aural Perception paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and carries 90 marks – 30% of the A2 qualification. Candidates answer questions on recorded extracts played a set number of times. Common question types include melodic and rhythmic dictation, chord and cadence identification, modulation spotting, error detection in pitch or rhythm, and a short written response on style, period, texture and use of musical elements. Every extract is from a range of western classical, popular, jazz and world music traditions, so stylistic flexibility is essential.

2. Interval Identification |

Intervals are the building blocks of melody and harmony. You must instantly name both ascending and descending intervals from a minor 2nd up to an octave, plus compound intervals. Associate each interval with a familiar song opening: for example, a perfect 4th with ‘Amazing Grace’, a minor 6th with ‘The Entertainer’ (ascending), or a major 7th with ‘Take On Me’ chorus. Practise daily with random interval drills at musictheory.net or using a piano app. Always sing the two notes back to internalize the distance.

Interval Ascending Song Reference Descending Song Reference
Minor 2nd Jaws theme Fur Elise opening
Major 2nd Happy Birthday Mary Had a Little Lamb
Minor 3rd Greensleeves Hey Jude (first two notes)
Major 3rd When the Saints Go Marching In Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
Perfect 4th Amazing Grace O Come, All Ye Faithful
Tritone Maria (West Side Story) Blue note in blues scale
Perfect 5th Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Flintstones theme
Minor 6th The Entertainer (main theme) Love Story theme (third and fourth notes)
Major 6th My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen
Minor 7th Star Trek theme (original) Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock)
Major 7th Take On Me chorus I Love You (Cole Porter)
Octave Somewhere Over the Rainbow Willow Weep for Me

3. Chord Recognition: Triads and Sevenths |

You will hear a chordal passage and must identify the quality of each chord: major, minor, diminished, augmented, or dominant 7th. Learn to hear the ‘colour’ of each triad – major sounds bright and stable; minor sounds sad or warm; diminished sounds tense and contracted; augmented sounds floating and unresolved. For seventh chords, the dominant 7th has a restless pull towards the tonic, while major 7th sounds lush, minor 7th smooth, and half-diminished m7♭5 has a brooding, jazz-influenced quality. Practise by playing random chords on a keyboard and naming them without looking.

4. Cadence Detection |

CCEA questions often ask you to name the cadence at the end of a phrase: perfect (V–I), plagal (IV–I), imperfect (I–V or IV–V etc.) or interrupted (V–vi). Focus on the bass movement and the final chord’s sense of closure. Perfect cadences sound completely settled; plagal cadences have a softer ‘Amen’-like finish. Imperfect cadences feel unfinished, as if waiting for an answer. Interrupted cadences surprise the ear by moving from dominant to the submediant. Train yourself by playing common cadential patterns in various keys and singing the bass line while listening for the chord quality.

CCEA 常让你说出乐句结尾的终止式:完全终止(V–I)、变格终止(IV–I)、不完全终止(I–V 或 IV–V 等)或阻碍终止(V–vi)。

5. Spotting Modulations |

Modulation questions require you to hear a key change and identify the new key relationship – often to the dominant, subdominant, relative minor or relative major. Listen for the new tonic note being established, often reinforced by cadential progressions. Pivot chords, which belong to both keys, usually appear just before the shift. If the extract ends in a different key, note the first and last chords to help determine the interval of transposition. Practise with short classical and Romantic excerpts where modulations are clear.

6. Melodic Dictation |

In melodic dictation you write down a short melody (often 4–8 bars) after a few playings. First, identify the metre, key and starting note. Then focus on the contour – steps, leaps and repeated notes. Use a shorthand staff notation with noteheads only, adding stems and beams later. Pay special attention to dotted rhythms, syncopation and chromatic notes. Always check the last note; it often ends on the tonic. Develop a routine: first hearing – overall shape; second hearing – note-heads on staff; third hearing – rhythm detail and corrections.

7. Rhythmic Dictation |

Rhythmic dictation is often combined with melody or given separately. You need to notate the rhythm of a single-line melody over a steady pulse. Tap the beat while counting subdivisions silently. Use rhythmic syllables (ta, ti-ti, etc.) to memorize patterns. Be aware of ties, rests and triplet figures. For compound time, feel the beat in dotted-crotchet units and subdivide into three quavers per beat. Always double-check if the bar lines align with the given time signature and whether the final bar is complete.

8. Harmonic Progressions |

Sometimes you must identify the chords used in a progression using Roman numerals or chord symbols. Learn to hear the bass line and relate it to the key: I is the tonic, IV is two and a half tones below, V is a step below I. Practise common progressions such as I–IV–V–I, I–vi–IV–V, and ii–V–I. Recognise the characteristic sound of a dominant 7th resolving to tonic. Chord inversions can be detected by a non-tonic note in the bass – listen for the lowest pitch and compare it with the chord’s root.

I–IV–V–I,I–vi–IV–V 和 ii–V–I。

9. Error Detection |

In error detection questions, a printed score is given with deliberate mistakes in pitch or rhythm. You must circle the errors and write the correct version. Typical alterations: a note changed by a semitone, a rhythmic value shortened or lengthened, a sharp or natural omitted. Listen section by section, comparing what you hear to the printed notation. Focus on passages where the melody moves by step – a small pitch change can be subtle. Mark all suspected spots on first hearing, then verify on subsequent playings.

10. Stylistic and Period Awareness |

The final section typically asks you to comment on an extract’s musical features, linking them to period or style. You should mention instrumentation, texture (monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic), tempo, dynamics, articulation, harmonic language, melodic shape and use of ornamentation. For example, a Baroque piece might feature terraced dynamics, contrapuntal texture and harpsichord continuo. A Romantic extract could show wide dynamic range, rubato, chromatic harmony and sweeping melodies. Prepare a checklist for each major era – Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th-century – plus popular styles like jazz, blues and musical theatre.

11. Exam Day Strategies |

Arrive with a well-rested ear – avoid loud music the night before. Read all questions during the pre-playback silence. Use abbreviations and shorthand for dictation (e.g., write beat numbers above notes). If you miss an answer, leave a mark and move on; you can revisit during gap moments. Manage your time strictly, especially for the longer written response. Before the last play, review your dictations for missing accidentals or dotted rhythms. Approach the paper with confidence: systematic training in short daily sessions yields better results than last-minute cramming.
