1. Media Language Basics | 媒体语言基础

Denotation (literal meaning): The straightforward, dictionary definition of a sign. For example, a red rose denotes a type of flower. Memory trick: “Denotation = Dictionary.”

外延（字面意义）： 符号的直接、字典定义。例如，红玫瑰的外延是一种花卉。记忆法：”外延即字典含义”。

Connotation (associated meaning): The cultural or emotional meanings attached to a sign. A red rose connotes love or romance. Trick: “Connotation = Cultural.”

内涵（联想意义）： 符号所附带的文化或情感含义。红玫瑰内涵代表爱情或浪漫。记忆法：”内涵即文化联想”。

Sign, Signifier, Signified (Saussure): A sign is the whole unit (word/image + meaning). The signifier is the physical form (sound, written word, image), and the signified is the mental concept. Think of a tree: the word “tree” is the signifier; the idea of a tree is the signified.

Anchorage (Barthes): Text that directs the viewer towards a preferred reading of an image, limiting polysemy. For instance, a caption “fresh and natural” on a juice advert anchors the meaning of the fruit image.
