📚 A-Level Edexcel Philosophy: Core Knowledge Points Summary | A-Level Edexcel

This comprehensive revision guide covers the essential content for the Edexcel A-Level Philosophy specification. It breaks down the four major thematic areas — Epistemology, Moral Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Philosophy of Mind — and also highlights key philosophical methods. Each section provides a paired English–Chinese explanation to reinforce understanding and exam readiness.

1. Epistemology Overview |

Epistemology is the study of knowledge, justification, and rationality. In the Edexcel course, we explore what it means to know something, how perception gives us knowledge, and whether a sharp divide exists between rationalism and empiricism. The central question is: what are the necessary and sufficient conditions for knowledge?

Historically, the tripartite definition of knowledge as justified true belief (JTB) has dominated. However, Edmund Gettier’s counterexamples forced philosophers to rethink the role of justification. This has led to a rich debate over internalism versus externalism about epistemic justification.

2. Knowledge and the Gettier Problem |

The traditional JTB analysis states: S knows that P if and only if (i) P is true, (ii) S believes that P, and (iii) S is justified in believing that P. Gettier (1963) presented cases in which a person has a justified true belief that is only accidentally true — the justification is detached from the truth-maker. For example, Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford; from this he deduces ‘Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona’. Unbeknownst to Smith, Jones has sold his Ford, yet Brown happens to be in Barcelona. Smith’s belief is true and justified, but we hesitate to say he knows it. Such cases show that the JTB conditions are not sufficient.

Responses to the Gettier problem include strengthening the justification condition (infallibilism), adding a ‘no false lemmas’ condition (JTB+N), or shifting to reliabilism, where a belief is knowledge if produced by a reliable cognitive process. The debate remains central to contemporary epistemology.

3. Perception as a Source of Knowledge |

Three main theories of perception are examined: direct realism, indirect realism, and idealism. Direct realism claims we perceive physical objects directly, without mediation by sense-data. It faces the challenge of illusion and hallucination — these seem to show that in some cases what we are immediately aware of is not a mind-independent object. Indirect realism (Locke) proposes we perceive objects indirectly via sense-data, which represent the external world. This faces the veil of perception problem: if we only ever perceive sense-data, how can we know that external objects resemble them? Idealism (Berkeley) denies the existence of mind-independent matter altogether: to be is to be perceived (esse est percipi). Berkeley argues that objects are collections of ideas sustained by the mind of God. Critics point out that this makes regularities unexplainable and conflicts with common sense.

4. Rationalism and Empiricism |

This core distinction concerns the primary source of knowledge. Rationalists (Descartes, Leibniz) argue that reason alone can reveal substantive truths about the world. Descartes’s cogito — ‘I think, therefore I am’ — is intended as a foundational, indubitable truth reached through pure reason. Empiricists (Locke, Hume) counter that all concepts and knowledge ultimately derive from sensory experience. Hume’s fork divides all propositions into ‘relations of ideas’ (a priori, analytic) and ‘matters of fact’ (a posteriori, synthetic). He famously argued that causality cannot be known by reason alone; we infer it from constant conjunction through custom or habit, not logical necessity. This poses a sceptical challenge: we have no rational justification for inductive reasoning, yet all our empirical knowledge depends on it.

5. Moral Philosophy: Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory according to which the right action is the one that maximises overall happiness or utility. Bentham’s act utilitarianism applies the principle of utility to individual acts, using the hedonic calculus to weigh pleasures and pains. He famously held that ‘pushpin is as good as poetry’ if it produces equal pleasure. Mill’s rule utilitarianism refines the approach by distinguishing higher and lower pleasures and advocating moral rules that, if followed, generally promote the greatest happiness. Mill argues it is ‘better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied’, emphasising the qualitative superiority of intellectual pleasures.

Common objections include: the theory is too demanding (we must sacrifice personal projects), it ignores justice and rights (punishing an innocent could maximise utility), and it is impractical because we cannot calculate all consequences. Utilitarians respond by refining the theory or showing that common moral intuitions actually align with long-term utility maximisation.

6. Kantian Deontological Ethics |

Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy is based on duty, reason, and the categorical imperative. An action has moral worth only if it is done from duty, not merely in accordance with duty or from inclination. The supreme principle of morality is the categorical imperative, which Kant formulates in several ways. The first formulation (Universal Law): ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ Contradictions in conception (e.g., false promising) or in the will (e.g., not helping others) show that a maxim is impermissible. The second formulation (Humanity Formula): ‘Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end.’ This prohibits using people and requires respecting their rational autonomy.

Critics argue that Kant’s ethics is too rigid (lying is never permitted, even to a murderer at the door), cannot resolve conflicting duties, and undervalues emotions and consequences. Defenders reply that the theory captures the absolute value of rational beings and grounds dignity and rights without relying on contingent consequences.

7. Aristotelian Virtue Ethics |

Virtue ethics shifts the focus from actions to the agent’s character. Aristotle’s ethical theory, as presented in the Nicomachean Ethics, aims at eudaimonia — a flourishing life achieved by living in accordance with reason. Moral virtues are states of character that lie in a mean relative to us, determined by a rational principle. For example, courage is a mean between cowardice and rashness. Practical wisdom (phronesis) is the intellectual virtue that enables one to discern the right mean in particular situations.

Objections include: the doctrine of the mean is vague and unhelpful for resolving dilemmas; virtues can conflict; and the theory lacks clear action-guidance. Additionally, some argue that Aristotle’s account is culturally relative and fails to provide universal moral norms. Nonetheless, virtue ethics has been revived by modern philosophers like Alasdair MacIntyre, who emphasises the narrative unity of a human life and the role of traditions.

8. Metaethics: Cognitivism vs Non-Cognitivism |

Metaethics investigates the meaning and nature of moral language. Cognitivism claims that moral statements express beliefs that are truth-apt — they can be true or false. Ethical naturalism (e.g., utilitarianism) holds that moral properties are natural properties and that moral terms can be defined using natural terms. Moore’s open question argument challenges naturalism: for any natural definition of ‘good’, we can still meaningfully ask ‘But is that good?’; thus ‘good’ is a simple, unanalysable, non-natural property (non-naturalism). Non-cognitivism, in contrast, denies that moral statements are truth-apt. Ayer’s emotivism claims that ethical statements merely express emotions and are equivalent to saying ‘Boo!’ or ‘Hurrah!’. Stevenson refined this by adding persuasive elements. Hare’s prescriptivism treats moral judgments as universalizable prescriptions: ‘Killing is wrong’ means ‘Do not kill!’, and I must be willing to prescribe the same in all relevantly similar cases.

9. Philosophy of Religion: Arguments for God’s Existence |

Three classical theistic arguments are central. The ontological argument (Anselm, Descartes) attempts to deduce God’s existence from the very concept of God. Anselm defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. If such a being exists only in the understanding but not in reality, a greater being can be conceived (one that also exists in reality), which is a contradiction. Therefore God exists in reality. Gaunilo’s ‘perfect island’ parody and Kant’s objection that existence is not a predicate are famous criticisms. The teleological argument (Paley’s watchmaker analogy) infers an intelligent designer from the complexity and apparent purposefulness of nature. Hume’s criticisms in Dialogues are preemptive and powerful: the world might be a crude first attempt by an infant deity, or the result of chance over infinite time. The cosmological argument, e.g., Aquinas’s First Three Ways, argues for a first cause, unmoved mover, or necessary being to explain the existence of contingent things. Hume and Russell challenge the principle of sufficient reason and the coherence of a necessary being.

10. The Problem of Evil and Religious Language |

The logical problem of evil (Mackie) argues that the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. If God can prevent evil and wants to, evil would not exist; evil exists; therefore such a God does not exist. Plantinga’s free will defence tries to show that it is logically possible that God could not create a world containing moral good without also allowing moral evil, because free creatures may choose evil. The evidential problem (Rowe) focuses on gratuitous suffering: the sheer quantity and distribution of evil makes God’s existence highly improbable. Theodicies (e.g., Hick’s soul-making theodicy) attempt to provide plausible reasons why a good God permits evil.

Religious language poses its own challenges. Verificationism (Ayer) claims that statements about God are unverifiable and therefore meaningless. Flew’s falsification challenge asks: what would count against the claim ‘God loves us’? If nothing is allowed to falsify it, the statement dies the ‘death by a thousand qualifications’. Responses include Hare’s blik concept, Mitchell’s parable of the partisan, and analogical predication (Aquinas) that religious language is analogical rather than univocal or equivocal.

11. Philosophy of Mind: Dualism and Physicalism |

The mind–body problem asks: what is the relationship between mental states and physical states? Substance dualism (Descartes) argues that mind and body are distinct substances. His main arguments include the conceivability argument (I can clearly and distinctly understand mind apart from body, so they can exist separately) and the divisibility argument (body is divisible, mind is indivisible). Dualism faces the interaction problem: how can an immaterial mind cause changes in a material body, and vice versa? Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia famously pressed Descartes on this point. Physicalism claims that everything is physical or supervenes on the physical. Type identity theory (Smart, Place) holds that mental states are numerically identical to brain states (e.g., pain = C-fiber firing). It is challenged by multiple realizability (Putnam) — the same mental state can be realized by different physical states in different organisms.

Functionalism (Putnam, Fodor) defines mental states by their causal roles: a mental state is defined by its typical causes and effects, and its relation to other mental states. This allows mental states to be multiply realized in brains, computers, or even aliens. Critics argue that functionalism leaves out qualia — the subjective what-it-is-like of experience. The knowledge argument (Jackson’s Mary) and the inverted spectrum thought experiment support the claim that physicalism cannot fully capture consciousness. Eliminative materialism goes further, claiming that folk psychology concepts like ‘belief’ and ‘desire’ are likely to be replaced by neuroscientific concepts, just as ‘phlogiston’ was eliminated.

12. Philosophical Methods and Summary |

Throughout the Edexcel course, students are expected to employ specific philosophical methods. These include: conceptual analysis (clarifying concepts such as knowledge, justice, or personhood); thought experiments (e.g., Gettier cases, the trolley problem, Mary’s room); logical argumentation (modus ponens, modus tollens, identifying validity and soundness); and rational evaluation of competing positions. The goal is not merely to describe theories, but to compare their strengths and weaknesses, and to construct coherent, critically assessed lines of reasoning.

Engaging with these four pillars of philosophy equips you with a toolkit for rigorous thinking. Epistemology sharpens your understanding of evidence and justification; moral philosophy develops your capacity for normative reasoning; philosophy of religion tests the limits of what can be rationally believed; and philosophy of mind investigates the nature of consciousness itself. Revision should focus on clarity of argument structure, precise use of technical vocabulary, and the ability to anticipate and rebut counterarguments. Consistency across English and Chinese explanations will deepen retention and ensure you meet exam requirements with confidence.
