📚 A-Level WJEC Art: Quick Reference of Essential Principles | A-Level WJEC

This handbook compiles the core theories and ‘formulas’ that underpin artistic practice and analysis in the WJEC A-Level Art and Design curriculum. By treating these reusable concepts like a scientist treats equations, you can solve visual problems with confidence and articulate your ideas with precision.

1. Colour Theory: The Wheel and Harmony |

The colour wheel, developed from Isaac Newton’s prism experiments, organises hues into primary (red, yellow, blue), secondary (orange, green, violet), and tertiary colours. Harmonious schemes rely on positions around the wheel, such as analogous (side-by-side) or complementary (opposite) relationships.

Warm colours (reds to yellows) often advance spatially and evoke energy, while cool colours (greens to violets) recede and suggest calm. Mastering these temperature contrasts allows you to build depth and mood without changing value or saturation.

2. The Three Attributes of Colour: Hue, Value, Saturation |

Every colour can be precisely described by three dimensions: hue (the name of the colour, e.g., red), value (lightness or darkness), and saturation (intensity or purity). Manipulating these attributes is the key to creating unified palettes.

A tint is a hue mixed with white, raising its value; a shade is mixed with black, lowering its value; a tone is mixed with grey, reducing saturation. Practise deliberate adjustments: a high-value, low-saturation sky recedes, while a low-value, high-saturation object leaps forward.

3. Complementary Colours and Simultaneous Contrast |

Direct complements (e.g., red/green, blue/orange, yellow/violet) intensify each other when placed side by side, a phenomenon called simultaneous contrast. This optical vibration can be used to energise a composition or draw the viewer’s eye to a focal point.

To reduce visual fatigue, avoid equal proportions of strong complements. Instead, let one hue dominate while the other appears as isolated accents. Also explore split-complementary schemes (base hue + the two colours adjacent to its complement) for lively yet controlled palettes.

4. Composition Principles: The Golden Ratio and Rule of Thirds |

The golden ratio (approximately 1.618:1) is a proportional relationship found in nature and classical art. Placing key elements along a golden spiral or rectangle guides the viewer’s eye in a natural, pleasing flow. Many iconic works position the focal point at the intersection of golden-division lines.

The rule of thirds, a simplified derivative, divides the frame into a 3×3 grid. Placing subjects at intersections or along lines typically yields dynamic tension. While trustworthy, treat it as a flexible guideline rather than a rigid law; break it intentionally to create unease or emphasis.

5. Perspective Systems: One-point, Two-point, and Three-point |

Linear perspective mathematically projects a 3D world onto a 2D surface. One-point perspective uses a single vanishing point on the horizon line, ideal for roads and corridors receding directly towards the viewer. All depth lines converge to that one point.

Two-point perspective employs two vanishing points on the horizon, typically for viewing objects at an angle, like the corner of a building. Vertical lines remain upright. Three-point perspective adds a third vanishing point far above or below, simulating dramatic bird’s-eye or worm’s-eye views. Use it to amplify scale and emotion.

6. Design Principles: Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Unity |

Balance distributes visual weight; it can be symmetrical (mirrored), asymmetrical (different elements of equal weight), or radial (arranged around a central point). Contrast creates visual difference — through value, colour, size, texture, or shape — to separate elements and establish hierarchy.

Emphasis directs attention to a focal area using isolation, convergence, or anomalies. Unity ensures all parts feel like a coherent whole, achieved through repetition, colour harmony, or consistent style. The most effective compositions orchestrate all four principles simultaneously.

7. Form and Content: Encoding Meaning |

Form refers to the physical qualities of an artwork — materials, techniques, composition, and visual elements. Content encompasses the ideas, themes, narratives, or emotions the work communicates. Their relationship is dialogic; form embodies content.

When analysing, ask: how does the chosen medium (e.g., charcoal grit vs. smooth oil paint) reinforce the message? Does the distorted figure express psychological turmoil? Artists often manipulate formal elements deliberately to make the invisible visible. Explain both the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ in your personal investigation.

8. Art Criticism: Description, Analysis, Interpretation, Judgement |

Edmund Feldman’s model provides a systematic framework for reading artworks. Step 1 — Description: list everything you see without judgement (objects, colours, shapes, textures). Step 2 — Analysis: examine how the elements and principles of design are organised (e.g., rhythm, balance, dominance).

Step 3 — Interpretation: infer the meaning, mood, or message, supported by evidence from steps 1 and 2. Step 4 — Judgement: evaluate the work’s success or significance based on personal criteria or contextual factors. Practise this sequence to build rigorous, evidenced annotation in your sketchbook.

9. Line and Shape as Emotional Signifiers |

Lines are not neutral; they carry psychological weight. Horizontal lines imply calm and stability (horizon). Vertical lines suggest strength and aspiration (standing figure). Diagonal lines inject tension and motion. Jagged, irregular lines can signal anxiety or violence; smooth, curved lines often convey comfort and sensuality.

Shapes operate similarly: organic, biomorphic forms read as natural and soft, while geometric shapes (squares, circles, triangles) evoke order, logic, and sometimes rigidity. Combining sharp and flowing contours within one composition sets up expressive contrasts that deepen the narrative.

10. Texture and Space: Tactile Illusion and Depth Cues |

Texture can be actual (physical surface quality, as in impasto paint) or implied (rendered illusion of roughness, smoothness, etc.). Both types engage the viewer’s sensory memory. Heavy impasto catches real light and shadow, reinforcing the materiality of the painting, while photographic smoothness can suggest detachment.

Depth is created not only by perspective but also through overlapping, atmospheric haze (aerial perspective), diminishing size, and modelling with light and shadow (chiaroscuro). Layer these spatial cues to construct believable, immersive worlds on a flat surface.
