1. Coastal Landscapes and Processes | 海岸景观与过程

Fetch: The uninterrupted distance of open water over which the wind blows without significant change in direction. A longer fetch allows waves to build up more energy, producing higher and more destructive breakers.

Natural hazard: A naturally occurring physical event, such as an earthquake, volcanic eruption or tropical storm, that has the potential to cause loss of life, damage to property and environmental disruption. Hazard becomes a disaster when it significantly impacts vulnerable populations.

自然灾害 (Natural hazard): 地震、火山喷发或热带风暴等自然发生、可能造成生命损失、财产损害和环境破坏的物理事件。当灾害对人类脆弱群体造成显著影响时,便成为灾难。

Vulnerability: The characteristics of a person or community that increase their susceptibility to the impacts of a hazard, including poverty, poor housing, lack of education and weak governance. Reducing vulnerability is central to disaster risk reduction.

Magnitude (Richter scale): A logarithmic measure of the energy released by an earthquake. Each whole-number increase represents a tenfold increase in ground motion and about 31.6 times more energy, though the scale is now largely superseded by moment magnitude (Mw).

Human Development Index (HDI): A composite index measuring a country’s average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living. HDI includes life expectancy, mean years of schooling and GNI per capita.

Gini coefficient: A statistical measure of income inequality within a country, ranging from 0 (perfect equality) to 1 or 100 (perfect inequality). A rising Gini coefficient indicates a widening gap between the rich and the rest of society.
