1. Elements of Art |

The seven elements are the basic building blocks of any artwork. Memorise them in order using the acronym “SLTCFST” – Shape, Line, Tone, Colour, Form, Space, Texture.

Line: A continuous mark made by a moving point. Think of “a dot that went for a walk”. Lines can be thick, thin, straight, curved, or gestural.

Shape: A two-dimensional enclosed area. Geometric shapes are precise; organic shapes are irregular. Mnemonic: “A shape is a closed line.”

Form: A three-dimensional object with volume and depth. Think of a sculpture. Associate it with “form = 3D shape”.

Space: The area around, between, or within objects. Positive space is the subject; negative space is the background. Remember “space is what is in between”.

Tone / Value: The lightness or darkness of a colour. Used to create shading and depth. Mnemonic: “Tone tells you how light or dark – think of a greyscale strip.”

Colour: Hue (the name of the colour), intensity (brightness) and value. The spectrum order can be remembered as “Roy G. Biv” – Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

Texture: The surface quality, either actual (how it feels) or implied (how it looks like it would feel). Link it to touch: “Texture is tactile.”

2. Principles of Design |

The principles of design organise the elements. A memorable phrase like “Big Cats Eat Mice, Playing Regularly Under Vines” helps recall Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Proportion, Rhythm, Unity, Variety.

Balance: The distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance is mirror-like; asymmetrical balance uses different objects to achieve equilibrium. Think of a seesaw.

Contrast: A strong difference between elements, such as dark/light, rough/smooth, or large/small. It creates visual interest. Link it to “contrast = clash”.

Emphasis / Focal Point: The area that stands out and catches the viewer’s eye first. Use a spotlight mentality: “emphasis = what is under the spotlight.”

Movement: How the eye travels through the artwork, often directed by lines, edges, or repetition. Visualise a pathway.

Pattern: The repetition of an element or motif over a surface. Pattern creates rhythm and decoration. Recall “pattern = repeat”.

Proportion: The relationship in size between parts of a work. Often linked to scale. Remember “proportion = relative size”.

Rhythm: A visual beat created by repeating elements with variation. It suggests movement. Think of a heartbeat.

Unity: A sense of wholeness; all elements work together harmoniously. Mnemonically, “unity is when all parts feel ‘one’.”

Variety: The use of different elements to add interest and avoid monotony. Too much unity without variety becomes boring; variety = dose of difference.

3. Colour Theory |

Colour vocabulary appears frequently in analysis. Focus on the colour wheel, harmonies, and descriptors. A quick way to recall primary colours is “RYB” – Red, Yellow, Blue (traditional primaries for pigment).

Primary colours: Red, yellow, blue. They cannot be mixed from other colours. Think “pure parents”.

Secondary colours: Green, orange, purple – made by mixing two primaries. Remember “mixing two primaries makes a secondary”.

Tertiary colours: Colours like red-orange or blue-green, made by mixing a primary with a neighbouring secondary. Their names combine both: “primary-secondary”.

Complementary colours: Opposite on the colour wheel, e.g. red and green. They create high contrast. Mnemonic: “Opposites attract.”

Analogous colours: Neighbours on the wheel, such as blue, blue-green and green. They are harmonious. Think “analogous = adjacent”.

Warm colours: Reds, oranges, yellows – associated with fire and sun. Advance forward visually.

Cool colours: Blues, greens, purples – associated with water and sky. Recede visually.

Hue, saturation, value: Hue = pure colour name; saturation = intensity (high saturation = vivid, low = dull); value = lightness or darkness. Use “HSV” like a paint mixer’s cheat sheet.
