1. Course Overview and Assessment Expectations |

The AS CCEA Music qualification consists of three components. Unit 1, Understanding Music, is a written and listening examination worth 40% of the AS. It tests your ability to analyse unfamiliar music, respond to set works, and demonstrate knowledge of music theory and history. Unit 2, Composing, accounts for 30% and asks you to create one composition in response to a brief, alongside a written commentary. Unit 3, Performing, is also worth 30% and requires a solo and/or ensemble recital lasting 5–8 minutes. Understanding how these units are structured and marked from the start will allow you to direct your summer work efficiently.

The written paper includes short-answer and extended-response questions, often based on audio excerpts. You will need to recognise chords, cadences, keys, instrumental techniques, texture, and stylistic features under timed conditions. During the summer, focus on active listening and quick identification of musical elements rather than passive hearing. Practising with past paper questions will sharpen your exam technique and show you exactly what examiners expect.

2. Music Theory Foundations: Scales, Intervals and Chords |

A secure grasp of scales, intervals and chords is non-negotiable for AS Music. You must be able to construct and identify major, natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales in all keys. Recognise key signatures up to six sharps and six flats, and understand the pattern of tones and semitones in each scale type. For instance, the harmonic minor scale features a raised 7th degree, creating an augmented 2nd between the 6th and 7th notes. Test yourself daily with scale flashcards and keyboard practice.

Intervals form the building blocks of melody and harmony. You should identify and write all simple and compound intervals within an octave, from minor 2nd to major 7th, using both numerical size and quality (perfect, major, minor, augmented, diminished). Pay special attention to the distinctive sound of a tritone (augmented 4th/diminished 5th), which often appears in dominant seventh chords and creates tension that drives harmonic progressions.

Triad construction is equally vital. Be able to build major, minor, diminished and augmented triads on any root note. In a major key, the chords built on the scale degrees follow the pattern I (major), ii (minor), iii (minor), IV (major), V (major), vi (minor), vii° (diminished). Use Roman numerals and chord symbols confidently, and begin to explore seventh chords, such as V⁷, ii⁷ and vii°⁷, which you will encounter in set works and creative tasks.

3. Harmonic Progressions and Cadences |

Understanding how chords move from one to another is central to both analysis and composition. The most common progressions in Western tonal music involve root movement by 4ths and 5ths, such as I–IV–V–I. Recognise the circle of 5ths progression and its fragments, which appear frequently in Baroque, Classical and popular music. Practise realising simple chord progressions at the keyboard and by writing in four-part texture, always checking for correct voice leading and avoidance of parallel 5ths and octaves.

Cadences punctuate musical phrases and give a sense of closure or continuation. You must identify perfect (V–I), imperfect (I–V, ii–V, IV–V), plagal (IV–I) and interrupted (V–vi) cadences by ear and in notation. In addition, learn to recognise the difference between a perfect cadence in root position and one with an inverted dominant. Annotating scores with cadence types will help you internalise their sound and function in both set works and unseen extracts.

你必须通过听觉和乐谱识别完全终止(V–I)、不完全终止(I–V、ⅱ–V、Ⅳ–V)、变格终止(Ⅳ–I)和阻碍终止(V–ⅵ)。

4. Instrumentation and Vocal Types |

AS CCEA candidates must be familiar with the standard instruments of the Western orchestra, their families (strings, woodwind, brass, percussion), typical ranges, and characteristic timbres. Know the difference between a violin and a viola, an oboe and a cor anglais, a trumpet and a cornet. Be able to describe playing techniques such as pizzicato, tremolo, con sordino, double stopping, flutter-tonguing and glissando. In vocal music, learn to distinguish the main voice types (soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass) and terms like coloratura, falsetto, and recitative.

Beyond the orchestra, the syllabus can include instruments from popular and traditional styles. Review the sound and role of electric guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, piano, synthesiser, and typical folk instruments. Recognising timbres from recordings alone is a crucial aural skill, so build a playlist of contrasting pieces and practise identifying instruments without looking at track listings. You will be asked to comment on how composers and performers use instrumental colour to convey mood and imagery.

5. Western Classical Music Eras and Styles |

A working knowledge of the main stylistic periods — Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th/21st Century — is essential for contextual understanding. Each era has distinctive features in melody, harmony, rhythm, texture and form. Baroque music often uses continuous basso continuo, terraced dynamics, and contrapuntal textures. The Classical period favours clear periodic phrasing, Alberti bass, and sonata form. Romantic music explores chromatic harmony, expansive melodies and rich orchestration, while 20th-century styles embrace atonality, minimalism, serialism, and experimental techniques.

Build your confidence by listening to representative works and creating a timeline table. Below is a summary to get you started:

Relate these stylistic features to your set works as soon as you receive them. Ask yourself how a piece embodies or challenges the norms of its time. This critical thinking will elevate your written responses.

6. Musical Texture and Form |

Texture describes how melodic, rhythmic and harmonic layers interact. The core textures are monophony (a single unaccompanied line), homophony (melody with chordal accompaniment), polyphony (multiple independent lines), and heterophony (simultaneous variations of a single melody). Be prepared to describe compound textures where, for example, a homophonic passage adds a fugal section. Identifying changes in texture within a piece is a common exam requirement.

Form gives music its architecture. From binary and ternary forms to rondo, theme and variations, and sonata form, you should be able to label sections using letters (A, B, A’, etc.) and explain the thematic relationships. Learn the typical structure of sonata form: exposition (first subject, transition, second subject, codetta), development, and recapitulation. Drawing formal diagrams of pieces you study will make the structure visible and memorable.

7. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |

Rhythm and metre are foundational to everything you play, compose or analyse. Be completely comfortable with simple and compound time signatures (2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8), and be able to explain the difference between simple duple, compound triple and so on. Syncopation, hemiola, cross-rhythms, and irregular time signatures (5/4, 7/8) may appear in set works and listening extracts, so spend time clapping and counting these patterns.

Tempo markings are not only about speed but also about character. Know the common Italian terms from Largo to Presto, as well as expressive qualifiers like maestoso, agitato, and cantabile. Similarly, be able to interpret metronome marks and describe how a tempo change (e.g. accelerando, ritenuto, rubato) affects the musical narrative. In your performance unit, precise tempo choices will directly impact your mark, so this knowledge has practical importance.

要了解从 Largo 到 Presto 的常见意大利语术语,以及带表情的修饰语,如 maestoso(庄严的)、agitato(激动的)、cantabile(如歌的)。

8. Melodic Writing and Development |

Melody is often the element listeners remember most. For AS Music, you need to be able to complete a given melodic opening, write a countermelody, and analyse how melodic material is developed. Common devices include sequence, repetition, inversion, retrograde, augmentation, diminution, fragmentation, and ornamentation (trills, turns, mordents, appoggiaturas). When you practise composing, apply these techniques consciously to make your melodies more sophisticated and stylistically convincing.

Phrase structure is equally critical. Understand the difference between a regular 4-bar phrase and an irregular extension, as well as antecedent–consequent phrasing. Recognising melodic contour, range, and the use of sequence or motif helps you write clear analytical descriptions. Transcribe short melodies from recordings to develop your ear and notation skills simultaneously.

9. Aural Perception and Sight-Singing |

Unit 1 includes demanding aural questions: identifying intervals, chord qualities, cadences, and modulations. A systematic ear-training routine over the summer will pay huge dividends. Start with interval recognition: associate each interval with the opening two notes of a familiar song. Then progress to identifying major and minor triads, diminished and augmented chords, and V⁷ in various inversions. Daily 10-minute sessions are more effective than occasional long practice.

Sight-singing supports both aural and performance skills. Use solfège or scale-degree numbers to pitch notes accurately. Begin with stepwise melodies in C major, then introduce skips and different key signatures. CCEA may ask you to notate a short melodic or rhythmic dictation; practise by recording yourself playing short phrases and transcribing them. The ability to hear what you see on the page — and vice versa — will transform your musical fluency.

10. Composition and Arranging Basics |

Unit 2 asks you to compose an original piece in response to a chosen brief. Use the summer to explore a digital audio workstation (DAW) or notation software, and to experiment with creating a balanced phrase structure, a clear texture, and a logical harmonic plan. Even simple piano or guitar pieces can be built around a I–IV–V–I framework with a memorable motif. Keep a sketchbook of melodic ideas, chord progressions, and rhythmic cells — these fragments will become invaluable when you begin the controlled assessment.

Your composition must demonstrate understanding of the chosen style and show development of ideas. Study short works you admire and deconstruct their form, harmonic rhythm, and textural contrasts. Imitation is an excellent learning tool; arrange an existing piece for a different set of instruments, keeping the structure but creatively altering timbre and register. This will sharpen your arranging skills and broaden your knowledge of instrumental capabilities.

11. Performance Preparation and Practice Strategies |

Unit 3 is externally assessed and requires you to present a recital of approximately 5–8 minutes at Grade 4 standard or above. Use the summer to select your repertoire carefully: choose pieces that contrast in tempo, style and mood, and that you genuinely enjoy playing. Work with your instrumental or vocal teacher to set realistic technical goals, such as improving tone, intonation, articulation, and memorisation. Record your practice sessions regularly and listen back critically — you will often notice expressive details that you miss while playing.
