1. What is Knowledge? |

The starting point of epistemology is the attempt to analyse what it means to know something. The traditional, widely accepted analysis is that knowledge is justified true belief (JTB). According to this account, a subject S knows a proposition P if and only if (i) P is true, (ii) S believes that P, and (iii) S is justified in believing that P. Each condition is individually necessary and jointly sufficient for knowledge.

The justification condition is meant to rule out lucky guesses. Even if a belief turns out true, if the believer had no good reason for holding it, we are reluctant to call it knowledge. Thus, a person who randomly guesses tomorrow’s weather correctly does not know it would rain, even though the belief was true.

2. The Gettier Problem |

In 1963, Edmund Gettier published a short paper that shook the foundations of epistemology. He provided counterexamples in which a person has a justified true belief but, intuitively, still lacks knowledge. In a typical Gettier case, the justification is defective because it relies on a false premise, yet the conclusion happens to be true by coincidence.

For example, Smith has strong evidence that Jones owns a Ford (he has seen Jones driving it). Smith then deduces ‘Either Jones owns a Ford or Brown is in Barcelona.’ Unbeknownst to Smith, Jones no longer owns a Ford, but it turns out Brown really is in Barcelona. Smith’s belief is justified and true, but he does not know the disjunction; the truth is accidental.

Gettier cases demonstrate that the JTB analysis is insufficient. Philosophers have since tried to strengthen the definition of knowledge, for instance by adding a ‘no false lemmas’ condition or by requiring that the belief is reliably formed. The quest for a complete analysis remains a live project.

3. Theories of Justification |

Once the structure of knowledge is problematised, the nature of justification demands closer attention. Three major theories offer competing accounts of how beliefs can be justified: foundationalism, coherentism, and reliabilism.

Foundationalism holds that all justified beliefs rest upon basic beliefs, which are self-justifying or non-inferentially justified. These foundations might stem from direct sensory experience or self-evident truths. The virtue of foundationalism is that it halts an infinite regress of justification; however, critics question whether any beliefs can truly be ‘basic’ without requiring further support.

Coherentism rejects foundations altogether. It claims that a belief is justified if it coheres with the rest of the believer’s belief system. Justification is holistic, like finding a web of interlocking support. But coherentism faces the isolation objection: a coherent system of beliefs could be entirely detached from reality, yet still count as justified.

Reliabilism shifts the focus from the subject’s internal access to reasons to the external process that produces the belief. A belief is justified if it results from a reliable cognitive process, one that tends to yield true beliefs. Perception and memory are candidate reliable processes. The difficulty lies in specifying exactly what makes a process reliable without circularity.

4. Perception: Realism and Idealism |

The philosophy of perception asks how our sensory experiences connect us to the external world. Direct realism is the common-sense view: we directly perceive mind-independent physical objects. When you see a tree, the tree itself is a constituent of your experience. Direct realism is challenged by the argument from illusion, which points out that objects can appear differently to different observers, suggesting we do not perceive them directly.

Indirect realism accepts that we only ever perceive sense-data, or mental representations, directly. The external world causes these sense-data, but we never perceive objects themselves. John Locke’s distinction between primary qualities (shape, motion) and secondary qualities (colour, taste) supports this view. The major problem for indirect realism is scepticism: if we only know representations, how can we ever check they match reality?

Idealism, most forcefully defended by George Berkeley, takes a more radical step. It denies that mind-independent matter exists at all. Objects are collections of ideas, and for them to exist is to be perceived (esse est percipi). Berkeley appeals to God as the permanent perceiver to guarantee the continuity of objects. Critics find idealism deeply counterintuitive and worry it collapses into solipsism.

5. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil is perhaps the most powerful objection to the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient God. If God has all three attributes, he would want to eliminate evil, could eliminate it, and would know how to do so. Yet evil exists. This contradiction forms the logical problem of evil, famously articulated by Epicurus and later refined by J.L. Mackie.

Theists offer defences and theodicies in response. A defence aims to show that the existence of God and evil is not logically contradictory, while a theodicy tries to explain why God permits evil. The free will defence holds that God gave humans free will, and the capacity to choose evil is necessary for genuine moral good. Some evil thus stems from human misuse of freedom.

The evidential problem pushes further: even if some evil is necessary, the sheer quantity and distribution of suffering seem disproportionate. Why does nature contain so much apparently pointless suffering, like animal pain? The evidential argument claims that the amount of evil makes God’s existence highly improbable, even if not logically impossible.

6. The Teleological Argument |

The teleological argument, or argument from design, concludes that the universe’s order and complexity point to an intelligent designer. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy is the classic formulation: if you find a watch on a heath, its intricate arrangement of parts compels you to infer a watchmaker. Similarly, the complexity of the natural world, such as the human eye, compels an inference to a divine designer.

David Hume, writing before Paley, offered devastating criticisms. He argued that the analogy between a watch and the universe is weak; we have experience of watches being designed, but we have no experience of universes being designed. Hume also suggested that even if the argument succeeds, it points to a finite, imperfect designer, or perhaps a committee of designers, not the God of classical theism.

In the modern era, the argument has been revitalised by fine-tuning claims. Physicists observe that the fundamental constants of the universe appear exquisitely calibrated to permit life. However, critics counter with the anthropic principle and the possibility of a multiverse, arguing that if countless universes exist, it is not surprising that at least one supports life.

7. The Cosmological Argument |

Cosmological arguments attempt to prove God as the ultimate cause of the universe. Thomas Aquinas presented his influential ‘Five Ways,’ the first three of which embody cosmological reasoning: the argument from motion, from efficient causality, and from contingency. All rely on the principle that an infinite regress of causes is impossible; there must be a first unmoved mover or uncaused cause.

The argument from contingency contrasts necessary and contingent beings. A contingent being depends on something else for its existence; a necessary being exists by its own nature. Aquinas argues that if everything were contingent, nothing would exist now, because contingent beings come into and go out of existence. Therefore, there must be a necessary being upon which all contingent beings depend, and this being is God.

Key objections include David Hume’s challenge to the very idea of a necessary being (we can conceive something not existing) and the possibility that the universe itself is the necessary being. Bertrand Russell famously asserted that the universe is just a brute fact, and it is illegitimate to ask for a total explanation of everything.

8. The Ontological Argument |

Unlike a posteriori arguments, the ontological argument is an a priori attempt to deduce God’s existence from the very concept of God. Anselm of Canterbury defined God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived.’ He argued that existence in reality is greater than existence merely in the understanding, so if God existed only in the mind, he would not be the greatest conceivable being. Therefore, God must exist in reality.

Gaunilo, a contemporary of Anselm, parodied the argument using the example of a perfect lost island: we can conceive of the greatest conceivable island, but that does not mean it actually exists. Anselm replied that the argument works only for the unique concept of a greatest conceivable being, but the parody has continuing bite.

Immanuel Kant’s criticism is widely regarded as decisive. Kant argued that ‘existence is not a real predicate.’ Adding ‘exists’ to the concept of a thing does not add to its definition; it merely posits the thing in reality. Thus, we cannot legitimately include existence in the definition of God in order to conclude that God exists without begging the question.

9. Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a teleological ethical theory that judges the morality of actions by their consequences. Jeremy Bentham’s act utilitarianism proposes the principle of utility: the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Bentham devised the hedonic calculus to measure pleasure across seven criteria, including intensity, duration, and certainty.

John Stuart Mill refined utilitarianism, introducing a qualitative dimension. He argued that pleasures of the intellect and moral sentiments are higher than those of mere sensation. Mill’s famous dictum captures this: ‘It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied.’ Yet Mill still maintained that the ultimate sanction of morality is happiness.

Common objections include the challenge that utilitarianism can justify blatant injustices if they increase overall happiness, and that it is too demanding, requiring us to constantly calculate the consequences of every action. Rule utilitarianism responds by evaluating rules rather than individual acts, arguing that following rules like ‘do not lie’ generally maximises utility.

10. Kantian Deontology |

In stark contrast to utilitarianism, Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophy is deontological: the moral worth of an action lies in its intention and conformity to duty, not in its consequences. For Kant, the only intrinsically good thing is a good will. A good will acts out of respect for the moral law, which is discovered through reason alone.

The core of Kant’s ethics is the categorical imperative, which commands unconditionally. Its first formulation requires that we ‘act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ If a maxim cannot be consistently universalised, the action is morally wrong. Lying fails this test because its universalisation would destroy trust and thus the very practice of promising.

The second formulation demands that we treat humanity, whether in our own person or in the person of another, always as an end and never merely as a means. This principle forbids using people solely for our purposes without respecting their own rational agency. Critics note that Kantian deontology can lead to rigid conclusions, such as forbidding lying even to save an innocent life, and it struggles with genuine moral dilemmas where duties conflict.

11. Virtue Ethics |

Virtue ethics shifts the focus from discrete actions and rules to the character of the moral agent. Rooted in Aristotle, it asks not ‘What should I do?’ but ‘What sort of person should I be?’ The ultimate goal of human life is eudaimonia (flourishing), and virtues are the character traits that enable us to achieve it. A virtue is a disposition to act in the right way, lying in a mean between two vices.

For example, courage is the mean between cowardice and recklessness; generosity lies between stinginess and wastefulness. Practical wisdom (phronesis) is the intellectual virtue that helps us discern the right mean in each situation. A virtuous person not only acts rightly but does so from a stable disposition and with the appropriate feelings and motives.

Criticisms include the claim that virtue ethics lacks clear action-guidance: faced with a moral dilemma, the instruction ‘act as the virtuous person would’ is vague. Aristotle’s list of virtues may also reflect his cultural context and exclude modern values. Nonetheless, virtue ethics remains attractive for its emphasis on moral education, flourishing, and the richness of moral psychology.
