1. Formal Elements of Art |

Line is a continuous mark with length and direction. It can define boundaries, suggest movement, and create texture. Lines may be actual or implied, straight or gestural.

Shape is a two-dimensional enclosed area defined by lines, colours, or tonal boundaries. Shapes can be geometric (squares, circles) or organic (freeform, irregular).

Form refers to three-dimensional objects having height, width, and depth. In two-dimensional art, form is often conveyed through shading, perspective, and tonal contrast.

Tone describes the lightness or darkness of a colour or area. Effective use of tone creates volume, depth, and a sense of atmosphere within a composition.

Texture is the surface quality of an object, either actual (tactile) or implied (visual). It enriches the sensory experience of an artwork, from rough impasto to smooth blending.

Colour (hue, value, intensity) adds emotional impact and can unify or disrupt a composition. Understanding colour theory is essential for effective visual communication.

Space refers to the area within, around, between, above, or below objects. Positive space is the subject; negative space is the background or empty area.

2. Principles of Design |

Balance is the distribution of visual weight in a composition. Symmetrical balance mirrors elements; asymmetrical balance uses different objects of equal weight; radial balance radiates from a central point.

Contrast refers to the juxtaposition of opposing elements (light/dark, rough/smooth, large/small) to highlight differences and create visual interest.

Emphasis draws the viewer’s eye to a focal point through placement, colour, contrast, or scale. It communicates the main message or key subject.

Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through an artwork, often guided by lines, edges, and repeating shapes. It can also suggest actual kinetic motion.

Pattern is the repetition of an element or motif across a surface, creating rhythm and visual cohesion. Patterns can be regular, irregular, or organic.

Rhythm is created by repeating visual elements at regular or alternating intervals, much like musical beat. It can unify a composition or lead the eye.

Unity occurs when all parts of a composition feel coherent and harmonious. It is achieved through proximity, repetition, and colour harmony.

3. Colour Theory |

Hue is the name of a colour, such as red, blue, or yellow-green. It is the pure spectrum colour found on the colour wheel.

Value (tone) describes how light or dark a hue is. Adding white creates a tint; adding black creates a shade; adding grey creates a tone.

Intensity (saturation or chroma) refers to the purity or vividness of a colour. High intensity is brilliant; low intensity appears dull or muted.

Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be made by mixing other hues. All other colours are derived from them.

Secondary colours (orange, green, violet) are created by mixing two primary colours equally.

Complementary colours sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (red–green, blue–orange, yellow–purple). When placed side by side, they create maximum contrast and vibrancy.

Analogous colours are groups of three or four hues next to each other on the wheel. They create a serene, unified palette often found in nature.

4. Drawing and Mark‑Making Techniques |

Hatching uses closely spaced parallel lines to build tone and texture. The closer the lines, the darker the value.

Cross‑hatching layers intersecting sets of parallel lines, creating richer tonal depth and form. Adjusting angle and spacing controls darkness.

Stippling applies countless tiny dots. Their density builds up tone gradually, often used for highly detailed, delicate rendering.

Blending smooths transitions between tones, using tools such as blending stumps, fingers, or soft brushes to eliminate sharp lines.

Scumbling involves a dry brush dragged lightly over a painted surface, leaving a broken, scratchy layer of colour that creates texture and atmosphere.

Impasto applies thick paint, often with a palette knife, so that brush or knife marks remain visible. It adds physical texture and can catch light dramatically.

5. Painting Techniques and Media |

Underpainting is a monochromatic or limited‑colour first layer, establishing values and composition before colour is added. It helps build luminosity in oils and acrylics.

Glazing applies a thin, transparent layer of colour over a dry underpainting. It modifies the hue beneath and creates optical depth.

Wash is diluted ink or watercolour applied in broad, even layers. It builds up transparent tones and is fundamental to watercolour painting.

Chiaroscuro uses strong contrasts between light and dark to model three‑dimensional form. Pioneered by Renaissance artists, it heightens drama and volume.

Sfumato softens outlines and blends tones so subtly that transitions appear smoky and atmospheric, famously used by Leonardo da Vinci.

Encaustic uses heated beeswax mixed with pigment, applied in molten state. It bonds to the surface and can be carved, polished, or layered for rich texture.

6. Perspective and Spatial Depth |

Linear perspective is a mathematical system using converging lines to a vanishing point on the horizon line, making objects appear smaller as they recede.

One‑point perspective has a single vanishing point directly in front of the viewer, often used for roads, railways, or corridors receding into the distance.

Two‑point perspective uses two vanishing points on the horizon line, giving a more dynamic view of an object’s two sides receding in space.

Aerial (atmospheric) perspective mimics how atmosphere scatters light: distant objects appear paler, bluer, and less detailed, creating depth without linear construction.

Foreshortening compresses a form to represent it projecting towards the viewer or receding. It exaggerates proportions for realistic spatial illusion.

7. Composition and Arrangement |

Rule of thirds divides the picture plane into nine equal rectangles using two horizontal and two vertical lines. Placing key elements along these lines or intersections often creates a balanced, dynamic composition.

Golden ratio (phi, approx. 1:1.618) is a proportional relationship found in nature, used to achieve aesthetically pleasing harmony. Many artists build compositions on Fibonacci spirals.

Symmetrical composition mirrors visual elements on either side of a central axis, conveying stability, formality, or calm authority.

Asymmetrical composition balances elements of differing visual weight without mirroring, creating a more modern, lively, and informal feel.

Leading lines guide the viewer’s eye toward a focal point or through the artwork, using roads, fences, rivers, or implied gazes.

8. Key Art Movements and Styles |

Impressionism (late 19th century) captured fleeting effects of light and atmosphere with visible brushstrokes, broken colour, and everyday subject matter. Monet and Renoir are central figures.

Post‑Impressionism extended Impressionist colour and brushwork but sought greater structure, emotion, and symbolism. Think Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne.

Cubism (Picasso, Braque) fragmented objects into geometric planes, presenting multiple viewpoints simultaneously. It revolutionised perspective and representation.

Surrealism (Dalí, Magritte) explored dreams, the unconscious, and irrational juxtapositions, often using hyper‑realistic rendering to depict impossible scenes.

Abstract Expressionism (Pollock, Rothko) emphasised spontaneous, gestural mark‑making or colour fields to express emotion beyond literal representation.

Pop Art (Warhol, Lichtenstein) borrowed from mass media, advertising, and consumer culture, often using bright colours, repetition, and irony.

9. Critical Analysis and Annotation Terms |

Composition is the arrangement of visual elements within the picture plane to unify the artwork and guide the viewer’s eye.
