1. The Elements of Music: The Building Blocks |

Every piece of music can be described through a set of foundational elements. In WJEC analysis, you are expected to identify and comment on pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, and structure. Start by asking: what is the melody doing? How is the harmony shaping the mood? These questions build a framework for coherent listening answers.

– Pitch organises sounds into high and low; it gives us melody and harmony. Without pitch organisation, music would be noise.

– Duration refers to note lengths, rests, and rhythmic patterns. It includes the choice of metre and the placement of accents.

– Dynamics govern loudness and softness, ranging from pianissimo (pp) to fortissimo (ff). Gradual changes like crescendo and diminuendo add shape.

– Tempo is the speed of the beat, indicated by Italian terms such as Allegro, Andante, or Largo. Rubato allows expressive pushing and pulling of tempo.

– Timbre is the tone colour or sound quality that distinguishes a violin from a flute. Think of it as ‘what sound’ rather than ‘which note’.

– Texture describes how many layers of sound are heard and how they relate, such as a single melody (monophonic), melody with chords (homophonic), or independent lines interwoven (polyphonic).

– Structure is the overall architecture: binary, ternary, sonata form, rondo, theme and variations. The blueprint gives the music its shape and expectation.

2. Tonality and Key Relationships |

Tonality in the WJEC AS course primarily centres on the major–minor system. Pieces establish a tonic note and chord, with other notes and chords gravitating around it. Diatonic harmony creates a sense of home, while chromatic notes add colour and tension. Modal music (e.g., Dorian, Mixolydian) also appears in folk and twentieth-century repertoire.

– The key signature tells you the tonic major or minor scale. A piece in C major uses no sharps or flats; A minor shares the same key signature but centres on A.

– Modulation moves the music to a new key. Common modulations are to the dominant (V) in major-key pieces or the relative major in minor-key pieces. At AS level, recognise pivot chords and cadences that confirm a new key.

– Tonality can be functional (where chords progress towards cadence goals) or ambiguous in later styles. Atonality, used by Schoenberg, abandons a central key altogether.

– Harmonic rhythm refers to the rate at which chords change. Fast harmonic rhythm drives momentum; slow harmonic rhythm underlines stability.

3. Melody and Melodic Writing |

Melody is often the most memorable part of a work. In WJEC listening, you might be asked to describe the shape (conjunct/disjunct), range, and how it is developed. Recognise motifs, sequences, imitation, and ornamentation. A strong melody uses repetition and contrast to sustain interest.

– Conjunct motion moves in small, stepwise intervals; disjunct motion features leaps. A balanced melody blends both.

– A motif is a short, distinctive musical idea. Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony opens with a famous four-note motif that is developed throughout.

– Sequence repeats a melodic fragment at a higher or lower pitch. Sequences can be diatonic or real, and they drive music forward logically.

– Ornamentation includes trills, mordents, turns, and grace notes. These decorations were especially important in Baroque and Classical styles.

– Phrasing refers to how notes are grouped into musical ‘sentences’. Observe articulation marks such as slurs, staccato, and accents to identify phrase shapes.

4. Harmony and Chord Progressions |

Harmony provides the vertical support beneath a melody. You need to be comfortable with Roman numerals (I, IV, V, vi, etc.), chord inversions (Ib, Ic, V7), and cadences. WJEC expects you to identify perfect, imperfect, plagal, and interrupted cadences by ear and in score excerpts.

– The primary triads I, IV, and V form the backbone of functional harmony. Adding vi, ii, and iii enriches the palette. The dominant seventh (V7) creates a strong pull back to the tonic.

– Cadences act as punctuation: a perfect cadence (V–I) sounds final; an imperfect cadence (I–V, ii–V, IV–V) feels incomplete; a plagal cadence (IV–I) is the ‘Amen’ close; an interrupted cadence (V–vi) provides a surprise.

– 终止式如同标点符号:完全终止(V–I)听起来完满;不完全终止(I–V、ii–V、IV–V)显得未结束;变格终止(IV–I)即“阿门”终止;阻碍终止(V–vi)带来意外。

– Dissonance and chromatic harmony increase tension. Suspensions, passing notes, and appoggiaturas are non-chord tones that colour the harmony.

– In the symphony, composers use cycle-of-fifths progressions, pedal notes, and enharmonic modulations to control large-scale harmonic flow.

5. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |

Rhythm brings music to life. At AS level, you must recognise simple and compound time signatures, offbeat accents, syncopation, and hemiola. Be able to describe whether the beat is regular, dance-like, or deliberately disrupted. Tempo markings often relate directly to character.

– Simple time (2/4, 3/4, 4/4) divides each beat into two equal parts. Compound time (6/8, 9/8, 12/8) divides beats into three quavers, giving a lilting feel.

– Syncopation places accents on weak beats or between beats. It is a hallmark of jazz, rock, and many twentieth-century pieces. Offbeat entries create rhythmic drive.

– Hemiola is a rhythmic device where two bars of triple metre are grouped to feel like three bars of duple metre, often used at cadences in Baroque music.

– Tempo terms like Largo (broad), Allegro (fast, cheerful), and Presto (very quick) describe the overall speed. Modifiers such as molto (much) and poco (a little) add nuance.

– 速度术语如 Largo(宽广)、Allegro(快板、欢快)和 Presto(急板)描述整体快慢。molto(非常)和 poco(稍稍)等修饰词增添细腻变化。

6. Texture and Instrumentation |

Texture is about the relationship between sounds. You should be able to label monophonic, homophonic (melody-dominated or chordal), polyphonic, and heterophonic textures. WJEC questions frequently ask how texture changes during a piece and how instruments are used to achieve particular effects.

– Monophonic texture features a single unaccompanied line. A solo singer or a unison passage in a symphony is an example.

– Homophonic texture centres on a melody supported by chords. Most Classical symphonic slow movements are homophonic, with a singing tune above sustained strings.

– Polyphonic texture contains two or more independent melodic lines woven together. Look for fugato sections or imitative counterpoint in the development sections of symphonies.

– Heterophonic texture, less common in Western classical music, occurs when two voices simultaneously vary the same melody, found in some folk and non-Western traditions.

– Instrumentation refers to the choice of instruments and how they are combined. Know the orchestra layout: strings, woodwind, brass, percussion. Timpani and trumpets were symbols of power in the Classical symphony.

7. Musical Form and Structure |

Understanding form helps you navigate a whole movement or piece. The WJEC Area of Study A (Western Classical Tradition) centres on the symphony, where sonata form is the most important structure. You will also encounter binary, ternary, rondo, theme and variations, and minuet‑and‑trio patterns.

– Sonata form has three main sections: exposition (first subject in tonic, second subject in a contrasting key, often dominant), development (the themes are fragmented, sequenced, modulated), and recapitulation (both subjects return in the tonic).

– Binary form (AB) is common in Baroque dances. Ternary form (ABA) creates a sense of departure and return, typical in Romantic character pieces.

– Rondo form (ABACA or ABACABA) returns to a recurrent ‘A’ refrain, producing a cheerful, balanced structure. The final movement of many Classical symphonies is a rondo.

– Theme and variations takes a simple melody and alters it harmonically, melodically, rhythmically, or texturally in successive statements. It demonstrates a composer’s creativity.

8. The Western Classical Tradition: Symphony 1750–1900 |

The symphony evolved from a three-movement Italian overture into a grand four-movement work. WJEC focuses on the period 1750–1900, covering Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and later Romantic symphonists. Each composer expanded the orchestra, extended harmonic language, and pushed structural boundaries.

– Haydn and Mozart established the Classical symphony: four movements (fast, slow, minuet/trio, fast finale), clear phrase structures, and functional harmony. The Mannheim school contributed dramatic dynamic contrasts and the ‘rocket’ figure.

– Beethoven transformed the symphony into a vehicle for personal expression. Symphony No. 3 ‘Eroica’ expanded the first movement to unprecedented length, while Symphony No. 5 unified the cycle through the famous motif. The scherzo replaced the minuet.

– Romantic symphonists such as Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, and Dvořák used programme music, huge orchestras, chromatic harmony, and cyclic themes
