📚 Case Study Practical Exercises |

In Key Stage 3 Geography, case studies are essential for understanding how geographical processes affect real places and people. This article is a practical guide to analysing case studies, with examples from population, settlement, coasts, rivers, and hazards. You will learn how to structure your answers, identify causes and effects, and evaluate management strategies. Each section includes a mini-task so you can practise applying your knowledge just like in an exam.

1. Understanding Case Study Structures |

To succeed in case study questions, you should use a clear framework. The ‘PEE’ method (Point, Evidence, Explanation) is widely used. Start by making a point about the case study, then provide specific evidence such as data or place names, and finally explain how this evidence supports your point. For example: Point – ‘Coastal erosion is severe at Happisburgh.’ Evidence – ‘The cliff has retreated by over 50 metres since 1990.’ Explanation – ‘This rapid retreat is caused by soft glacial till and strong waves from the north-east.’ This structure ensures your answers are focused and detailed. You should also use linking words like ‘because’, ‘therefore’ and ‘however’ to connect your ideas.

2. Population Dynamics: China’s One-Child Policy |

China introduced the One-Child Policy in 1979 to slow population growth. Families in urban areas were allowed only one child, while rural families could have a second if the first was a girl. The policy reduced the birth rate from 33‰ in 1970 to 12‰ in 2010. However, it also created problems: an ageing population, a skewed sex ratio (118 boys for every 100 girls), and labour shortages. The policy was relaxed in 2015. To analyse this case study, you should consider both positive and negative impacts and link them to demographic indicators like birth rate, death rate and dependency ratio.

Let’s practise. Task: Using the One-Child Policy case, give one positive impact with evidence, and one negative impact with explanation.

Positive impact: The policy successfully reduced the birth rate, easing pressure on resources. Evidence: The fertility rate fell from 2.9 in 1979 to 1.7 by 2000. Negative impact: It led to an ageing population, as fewer young people were born to support the elderly. Explanation: In 2020, the proportion of over-65s reached 13.5%, straining pension and healthcare systems.

3. Urbanisation: Favelas in Rio de Janeiro |

Rocinha is one of the largest favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a self-built settlement where many houses are constructed from scrap materials and lack secure land tenure. Challenges include overcrowding, lack of sanitation, high crime rates and poor access to formal healthcare and education. However, improvements have been made through schemes such as Favela-Bairro, which provided paved roads, water pipes, electricity and waste collection. Some areas also saw the installation of cable cars to improve access and reduce the isolation of hillside communities. When analysing this case, it is useful to weigh up the original problems against the effectiveness of the solutions.

Task: Describe one challenge faced by residents of favelas and evaluate one improvement project, mentioning its long-term sustainability.

Challenge: Lack of sanitation – open sewers and limited toilets lead to diseases like cholera. Improvement: The Favela-Bairro project installed sewer systems and piped water in Rocinha. However, maintenance is costly, and rapid population growth can outstrip the new infrastructure, making long-term sustainability uncertain.

4. Coastal Erosion: Happisburgh, UK |

Happisburgh is a village on the Norfolk coast where erosion is extremely rapid. The cliffs are made of soft glacial till, which is easily attacked by waves, especially during north-easterly storms. Since 1990, over 50 metres of land have been lost, and several houses have fallen into the sea. Sea-level rise linked to climate change is making the problem worse. Management strategies include hard engineering such as rock groynes and a sea wall, but these are expensive and can increase erosion elsewhere. Soft engineering, like beach nourishment, is temporary. Some residents have accepted managed retreat – moving inland. A comparison of these approaches helps students understand the conflict between cost, effectiveness and environmental impact.

The table below summarises the main defences used at Happisburgh:

Strategy Description Pros Cons
Sea wall Concrete wall to reflect waves Effective immediate protection Very expensive, unsightly, can increase erosion further along the coast
Rock groynes Wooden or rock barriers trap sand Creates wider beach, absorbs wave energy Starves down-drift beaches of sand
Managed retreat Allowing the sea to reclaim land, moving people Natural, long-term, cost-effective Loss of property, emotional stress for residents

Task: Evaluate the most sustainable strategy for Happisburgh, giving reasons.

Managed retreat may be the most sustainable long term because it works with natural processes and avoids high maintenance costs. However, it is socially difficult because families lose their homes. Hard engineering provides short-term safety but transfers the problem elsewhere and requires constant funding. Therefore, sustainability depends on whether we value environmental or social factors more.

5. River Flooding: The 2015 UK Floods |

In December 2015, Storm Desmond brought record-breaking rainfall to Cumbria, UK. Honister Pass recorded 341.4 mm of rain in 24 hours. The ground was already saturated from earlier rainfall, so the water ran straight into rivers such as the River Eden and River Greta. The steep valleys and urban surfaces worsened the flooding. Thousands of homes were flooded, bridges collapsed, and insurance payouts exceeded £1.3 billion. Short-term responses included rescue operations and temporary defences; long-term measures involved improving flood walls and installing better warning systems. This case illustrates the linked physical and human causes of river floods.

Task: Explain how both physical and human factors contributed to the severity of the 2015 floods. Use specific place evidence.

Physical factors: The exceptional rainfall was caused by a long-lasting weather front. The steep relief of the Lake District sped up surface run-off into river channels. Human factors: Urbanisation in Carlisle and Cockermouth increased impermeable surfaces, meaning more water ran into drains and rivers. Deforestation on slopes had reduced interception, so water reached rivers faster. Together these made the peak discharge much higher than the river channels could contain.

6. Earthquake Hazard: Nepal 2015 |

On 25 April 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, with its epicentre near Gorkha. It was a shallow quake (only 15 km deep), which intensified surface shaking. Nearly 9,000 people died, over 22,000 were injured, and centuries-old heritage sites in Kathmandu Valley were destroyed. Tremors triggered landslides and avalanches, including one on Mount Everest that killed 22 climbers. As a low-income country (LIC), Nepal had poorly constructed buildings, limited emergency services and difficult mountainous terrain that slowed rescue efforts. By comparing with earthquakes in high-income countries (HICs), students learn how the level of development affects vulnerability and recovery.

Task: Explain why the death toll was so high in the Nepal earthquake, using specific factors.

The high death toll was due to a combination of factors. First, the shallow focus meant energy was not absorbed much by the crust, causing violent shaking at the surface. Second, many buildings were made of unreinforced masonry that collapsed easily. Third, the earthquake occurred in a densely populated region, including Kathmandu. Fourth, landslides blocked roads, hampering rescue. Finally, Nepal’s limited emergency response resources delayed medical aid and search-and-rescue operations.

7. Volcanic Eruption: Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland |

In April 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland erupted. It is located beneath an ice cap, which made the eruption explosive when magma mixed with meltwater. The eruption ejected a huge ash cloud up to 9 km into the atmosphere. Because of prevailing winds, the ash drifted over Europe, forcing the closure of airspace for six days. Over 100,000 flights were cancelled, costing the airline industry around £1.3 billion. However, the crisis also boosted Icelandic tourism through clever marketing, and volcanic soil remains fertile for farming. This case demonstrates that volcanic events bring both negative economic impacts and unexpected opportunities.
