1. What is Economics? |

Economics is the social science that studies how people, businesses, and governments make choices when faced with limited resources.

It is divided into microeconomics (studying individual decisions) and macroeconomics (looking at the whole economy, such as inflation and unemployment).

Understanding economics helps us explain everyday events, from the price of a snack to why countries trade.

2. The Basic Economic Problem: Scarcity and Choice |

The fundamental economic problem is scarcity: there are not enough resources to satisfy all human wants.

Because resources are limited, we must make choices. Every choice involves giving something up.

Scarcity applies to everything – time, money, raw materials, and energy. It forces us to prioritise.

3. Needs and Wants |

A need is something essential for survival, such as food, water, shelter, and clothing.

A want is something we desire but can live without, like a smartphone, designer shoes, or a holiday.

Distinguishing between needs and wants helps us understand consumer behaviour and budgeting.

4. Factors of Production |

To produce goods and services, we need resources called factors of production. There are four main categories:

Factor of Production 生产要素 Examples
Land – all natural resources Forests, minerals, water
Workers, teachers, doctors
Capital – man‑made tools Machinery, buildings, computers
Enterprise – risk‑taking individuals who combine the other factors Founders, inventors

All four factors are needed to run a business and produce output.

5. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative that you give up when making a choice.

If you spend your evening studying instead of watching a movie, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment you would have gained from the movie.

Opportunity cost is not always about money; it can be time, pleasure, or any forgone benefit.

6. Demand and Supply |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at different prices.

The law of demand states that, all else being equal, as price rises, quantity demanded falls.

Supply is the quantity that producers are willing and able to sell. The law of supply says that a higher price usually leads to a higher quantity supplied.

Demand and supply together determine the market price.

7. Markets and Prices |

A market is any place (physical or online) where buyers and sellers meet to exchange goods and services.

The equilibrium price is where the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied. There is no shortage or surplus at this price.

If the price is set above equilibrium, a surplus occurs (excess supply). If below, a shortage occurs (excess demand).

Prices act as signals in a market economy, guiding resources to where they are most valued.

8. Money and Personal Finance |

Money serves as a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account.

Personal finance involves planning your income and spending. A budget helps you track money coming in and going out.

Saving is setting aside money for future use, while investing means using money to earn a return. Both are important for financial security.

Understanding interest rates, borrowing, and debt is also part of financial literacy.

9. Different Economic Systems |

An economic system is the way a country organises its resources and distributes goods and services.

In a market economy, decisions are made by individuals and firms based on prices. The government’s role is limited.

In a planned (command) economy, the government makes all major decisions about production and distribution.

Most modern economies are mixed economies, combining elements of both market and government intervention.

10. International Trade Basics |

International trade involves the exchange of goods and services between countries.

Countries export goods they can produce efficiently and import goods that are cheaper or better produced elsewhere.

Specialisation and the principle of comparative advantage explain why trade benefits all parties – even if one country is better at producing everything.

Trade barriers, such as tariffs and quotas, can protect domestic industries but often raise prices for consumers.
