1. Pinyin Spelling Formula | 拼音拼写公式

The standard syllable structure in Mandarin is: Initial (声母) + Final (韵母) + Tone (声调). The tone mark is placed on the main vowel following the order a, o, e, i, u, ü. When a syllable begins with i, u or ü, replace the i with y, the u with w, or add y before ü and remove the umlaut; when ü follows j, q, x, the umlaut is dropped. Example: initial zh + final ong + tone 1 → zhōng (中).

普通话的标准音节结构是:声母 + 韵母 + 声调。声调标记按照 a、o、e、i、u、ü 的顺序标在主要元音上。以 i、u、ü 开头的音节,i 改为 y,u 改为 w,或在 ü 前加 y 并去掉两点;ü 跟在 j、q、x 后时省去两点。例如:声母 zh + 韵母 ong + 第一声 → zhōng (中)。

Tone Number Tone Mark Example
1st (high level) ˉ mā (妈)
2nd (rising) ˊ má (麻)
3rd (dipping) ˇ mǎ (马)
4th (falling) ˋ mà (骂)

The formula can be summarised as: Syllable = (C)V + T, where C is an optional consonant initial, V is a vowel or diphthong final, and T is the tone. Use this formula to decode any pinyin syllable you encounter.

该公式可总结为:音节 = (辅音)元音 + 声调,其中 C 为可选辅音声母,V 为元音或双元音韵母,T 为声调。运用此公式可以解码你遇到的任何拼音音节。

2. Stroke Order Theorem | 笔画顺序定理

Every Chinese character follows a specific stroke order. The fundamental rule is: Top to bottom, left to right. When a character is enclosed, complete the enclosure after the inside content, with a few exceptions. The sequence can be expressed as: Stroke Order = (Horizontal → Vertical) before (Left-falling → Right-falling), inner part before bottom enclosure.

每个汉字都遵循特定的笔顺。基本规则是:先上后下,先左后右。包围结构先写内部再封口,少数例外。书写顺序可表示为:先横后竖,先撇后捺,先内后封底。

  • Example 1 (十): ① horizontal (一), ② vertical (丨).
  • Example 2 (人): ① left-falling (丿), ② right-falling (乀).
  • Example 3 (国): ① outer enclosure (丨𠃐), ② inner part (玉), ③ bottom closing line (一).
  • 例1 (十): ① 横 (一),② 竖 (丨)。
  • 例2 (人): ① 撇 (丿),② 捺 (乀)。
  • 例3 (国): ① 外框 (丨𠃐),② 内部 (玉),③ 底横 (一)。

Applying this theorem consistently will improve handwriting accuracy and help you use Chinese dictionaries organised by stroke count.

持续运用这一定理可以提高书写准确性,并帮助你使用按笔画数编排的汉语字典。

3. Radical Meaning Formula | 部首意义公式

About 90% of Chinese characters are phono-semantic compounds. The semantic radical often hints at meaning. The formula: Character ≈ Radical (Meaning Clue) + Phonetic Component (Sound Clue). Recognising radicals accelerates vocabulary learning.

大约 90% 的汉字是形声字。表义偏旁往往提示字义类别。公式为:汉字 ≈ 部首 (义符) + 声旁 (音符)。识别部首能加速词汇学习。

Radical Meaning Category Examples
氵 (三点水) water, liquid 河 (river), 海 (sea), 酒 (alcohol)
木 (木字旁) tree, wood 林 (forest), 桌 (table), 根 (root)
口 (口字旁) mouth, speech, openings 吃 (eat), 叫 (call), 呢 (particle)
忄 (竖心旁) heart, emotions 快 (quick/pleased), 怕 (fear), 情 (feeling)

When you encounter an unfamiliar character, try splitting it into radical and phonetic part — this formula-based deduction works very well at KS3 level.

遇到生字时,尝试将其拆分为部首和声旁——这种基于公式的推导在 KS3 阶段非常有效。

4. Basic Sentence Structure Formula | 基本句子结构公式

The canonical Chinese sentence follows: S + (Adverbial) + V + O. Unlike English, time and place adverbials usually appear before the verb. This fixed word order is a cornerstone of Chinese syntax.

汉语的基本句式为:主语 + (状语) + 动词 + 宾语。与英语不同,时间、地点状语通常出现在动词之前。这一固定语序是汉语句法的基石。

S + Time + Place + V + O

主语 + 时间 + 地点 + 动词 + 宾语

Example: 我 (S) 明天 (Time) 在学校 (Place) 学 (V) 中文 (O). This translates to ‘I will study Chinese at school tomorrow.’ Notice how time and place precede the verb.

例句:我 (主语) 明天 (时间) 在学校 (地点) 学 (动词) 中文 (宾语)。注意时间与地点均位于动词之前。

Negation is formed by placing 不 or 没 directly before the verb, and yes-no questions can be created with 吗 at the end or by using the V-not-V pattern — both extensions of this base formula.

否定句将“不”或“没”直接放在动词前构成,是非问句则可在句末加“吗”或使用正反问形式——两者都是这一基础公式的延伸。

5. Aspect Markers as Operators | 体标记运算符 (了、着、过)

Chinese uses aspect markers to express how an action relates to time, without changing the verb form. Think of them as operators: V + 了 (completion), V + 着 (continuation), V + 过 (experience). They attach immediately after the verb.

汉语使用体标记表达动作与时间的关系,而动词形式不变。可将它们视为运算符:V + 了 (完成),V + 着 (持续),V + 过 (经历)。它们紧跟动词之后。

  • 我吃了一个苹果。 (I ate an apple — action completed.)
  • 他站着看书。 (He is reading while standing — continuing state.)
  • 我去过北京。 (I have been to Beijing — past experience.)
  • 我吃了一个苹果。(动作完成)
  • 他站着看书。(状态持续)
  • 我去过北京。(过往经历)

The theorem: 了 is not a past tense marker; it marks bounded events. 着 signals a static ongoing posture or parallel action. 过 signals an experience that happened at least once. Mastering this operator logic prevents tense-related errors.

定理:了不是过去时标记,它标记有边界的事件;着表示静态的持续或伴随动作;过表示至少发生一次的经历。掌握这一运算符逻辑可避免时态相关错误。

6. Comparative Sentence Formula (比) | 比较句公式 (比)

To compare two things in Chinese, use the 比 construction: A + 比 + B + Adj. The adjective itself does not change; degree modifiers like 很 or 非常 are not used directly with the adjective in this pattern. Add 一点儿, 得多 or 多了 after the adjective to indicate the degree of difference.

比较两个事物时使用“比”字构式:A + 比 + B + 形容词。形容词本身不变化;在此结构中形容词前不可直接加“很”或“非常”。在形容词后加“一点儿”、“得多”或“多了”表示差异程度。

A 比 B Adj + (一点儿 / 得多 / 多了)

Examples: 哥哥比我高。 (Older brother is taller than me.) 今天比昨天热得多。 (Today is much hotter than yesterday.) The formula remains unchanged for negation: A 没有 B Adj.

例句:哥哥比我高。 今天比昨天热得多。否定式保持同样结构:A 没有 B + 形容词。

Remember, 比 cannot be used with adjectives that already imply comparison like 一样 (same). For equality, use A 跟 B 一样 Adj.

请记住,比不可与本身含比较义的形容词如“一样”连用。表示同等程度时用“A 跟 B 一样 Adj”。

7. 把-construction Theorem | “把”字句定理

The 把-sentence highlights how an object is disposed of or affected. Its formula: S + 把 + O + V + Complement / 了. The object must be definite, and the verb must be transitive and accompanied by a result, direction or other complement.

“把”字句强调宾语如何被处置或影响。其公式为:主语 + 把 + 宾语 + 动词 + 补语/了。宾语必须是有定的,动词必须是及物的,并带有结果、趋向或其他补语。

  • 我把作业写完了。 (I finished the homework.)
  • 请把窗户打开。 (Please open the window.)
  • 地把书放在桌子上。 (He put the book on the table.)
  • 我把作业写完了。
  • 请把窗户打开。
  • 地把书放在桌子上。

This theorem dictates that a bare verb cannot follow 把; you need a complement like 完, 在, 给 or a directional phrase. Understanding this prevents the most common KS3 writing error.

定理要求“把”后不能是光杆动词;必须带有“完”、“在”、“给”或趋向短语等补语。理解这一点可防止 KS3 写作中最常见的错误。

8. 被-construction Passive Formula | “被”字句被动公式

The passive voice is created by: Receiver + 被 (+ Agent) + V + Complement. 被 marks the receiver of an action, and the agent can be omitted if unknown. This formula is especially common in formal or negative-event contexts.

被动语态由以下公式构成:受事 + 被 ( + 施事) + 动词 + 补语。“被”标记动作的承受者;施事如果不明可以省略。该公式在正式场合或消极事件中尤为常见。

Example: 我的自行车被偷了。 (My bike was stolen.) 那本书被他借走了。 (That book was borrowed by him.) Note that 被 requires a resultative complement (了, 走, 完, etc.) just like 把.

例句:我的自行车被偷了。那本书被他借走了。注意“被”字句同样要求结果补语(了、走、完等),与“把”字句类似。

In spoken Chinese, 让 or 叫 can sometimes replace 被, but the core formula stays the same. Use this passive theorem when the focus is on the affected object.

在口语中,“让”或“叫”有时可替换“被”,但核心公式不变。当重点在受影响的物体时使用此被动定理。

9. Serial Verb Construction Formula | 连动结构公式

Chinese often strings two or more verbs together without conjunctions to express purpose, sequence or manner. The formula is: S + VP₁ + VP₂ (+ VP₃ …). The verbs share the same subject, and the order reflects temporal or logical sequence.

汉语常将两个或多个动词连用,无需连词,以表达目的、先后顺序或方式。公式为:主语 + 动词短语₁ + 动词短语₂ (+ 动词短语₃ …)。动词共享同一主语,顺序反映时间或逻辑先后。

  • Purpose: 我去图书馆借书。 (I go to the library to borrow books.) VP₁ = go to library, VP₂ = borrow books.
  • Sequence: 他回家吃了饭就睡觉了。 (He went home, ate and then slept.)
  • Manner: 我坐飞机去上海。 (I go to Shanghai by plane.)
  • 目的:我去图书馆借书。
  • 顺序:他回家吃了饭就睡觉了。
  • 方式:我坐飞机去上海。

This theorem reinforces that Chinese prefers verb chains over infinitives or participles. At KS3, mastering two-verb series is essential for natural expression.

此定理说明汉语偏好动词链而非不定式或分词。KS3 阶段掌握两个动词的连用对自然表达至关重要。

10. Attributive and Adverbial Placement Rules | 定语与状语位置规则

Modifiers in Chinese are placed to the left of what they modify. The formula is: Attributive + 的 + Noun; Adverbial + 地 + Verb. These structural particles act as connectors and can be omitted in simple cases.

汉语的修饰语位于被修饰语左侧。公式为:定语 + 的 + 名词状语 + 地 + 动词。这些结构助词起连接作用,简单情况下可省略。

  • 定语:很大的房子 (a very big house), 我买的书 (the book that I bought).
  • 状语:慢慢地走 (walk slowly), 高兴地唱歌 (sing happily).
  • 定语:很大的房子,我买的书。
  • 状语:慢慢地走,高兴地唱歌。

Remember that Chinese attributives, including full clauses, always precede the noun — a major difference from English relative clauses. Adverbials usually precede the verb unless they express duration or frequency, which can follow.

记住汉语的定语,包括完整从句,总是位于名词之前——这与英语关系从句有显著不同。状语通常位于动词之前,但表示持续时间或频率的状语可位于动词之后。

11. Question Formation Formula | 疑问句构成公式

Forming questions in Chinese does not require changing word order. The three main formulas are: Statement + 吗?; V + 不/没 + V?; and Question-word question (Q-word replaces the unknown element, keeping S-V-O order).

构成中文疑问句无需改变语序。三大主要公式为:陈述句 + 吗?V + 不/没 + V?;以及疑问代词问句 (疑问词替换未知部分,保持主谓宾语序)

Type Formula Example
Yes/no with 吗 S V O 吗? 你是学生吗?
V-not-V S V-not-V O? 你去不去?
Q-word Q-word + rest in SVO 谁来了?什么名字?

The theorem: never use 吗 together with a question word. Also, the particle 呢 can be used for reciprocal questions (我很好,你呢?). This fixed-formula approach makes Chinese question formation highly predictable.

定理:吗永远不与疑问词共现。此外,语气词“呢”可用于反问 (我很好,你呢?)。这种固定公式化的方法使汉语疑问句构成高度可预测。

12. Measure Word Agreement Theorem | 量词搭配定理

Whenever a numeral or a demonstrative modifies a noun, a measure word (classifier) must appear between them. The formula: Num/Dem + Measure Word + Noun. The choice of measure word depends on the noun’s shape, category or convention.

凡是数词或指示代词修饰名词,中间必须加量词。公式为:数词/指示代词 + 量词 + 名词。量词的选择取决于名词的形状、类别或习惯搭配。

  • 一本书 (one book) — 本 for bound volumes.
  • 三只猫 (three cats) — 只 for animals.
  • 这张桌子 (this table) — 张 for flat objects.
  • 五杯水 (five cups of water) — 杯 for containers.
  • 一本书 — 本用于装订成册的物体。
  • 三只猫 — 只用于动物。
  • 这张桌子 — 张用于平面物体。
  • 五杯水 — 杯用于容器。

The universal measure word 个 can be used with many common nouns in informal speech, but for KS3 written accuracy, memorise the specific pairings. Measure words also occur with 哪 (which) and 几 (how many). This theorem is non-negotiable in standard Chinese.

通用量词“个”在口语中可与许多普通名词连用,但为 KS3 写作准确起见,需记忆特定搭配。量词还与“哪”和“几”同时出现。这条定理在标准汉语中不可忽视。
