📚 KS3 CCEA Art: Vocabulary & Terminology Quick Memorisation Guide | CCEA KS3

In Key Stage 3 CCEA Art and Design, building a strong vocabulary of art terms is just as important as practising your drawing or painting skills. The ability to name and describe the elements you see and use will transform your sketchbook annotations, peer discussions and examination performance. This guide pairs 50 essential terms with clear explanations in both English and Chinese, helping you to memorise them quickly and use them confidently.

1. Elements of Art: The Building Blocks |

Line is a continuous mark made on a surface by a pointed tool. It can vary in width, direction, and length. Artists use line to define shapes, suggest texture, and convey a sense of movement.

Shape is a two-dimensional, flat enclosed area created when a line meets itself or when colour or value changes. Shapes can be geometric (like squares) or organic (like free-form blobs).

Form refers to objects that have three dimensions – height, width, and depth. In drawing and painting, form is created using shading and perspective to make shapes appear solid and volumetric.

Texture is the surface quality of an object that can be felt (actual texture) or seen (implied texture). Artists create visual texture with brushstrokes, hatching, or stippling.

Space is the area around, between, or within objects. Positive space is occupied by the subject, while negative space is the empty background. Artists manipulate space to create depth.

2. Principles of Design: Organising the Elements |

Balance is the distribution of visual weight in a composition. Symmetrical balance is mirror-like, while asymmetrical balance uses unlike elements to achieve a sense of stability.

Contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements, such as light and dark, rough and smooth, or large and small, to create visual interest and drama.

Emphasis is the strategy of drawing the viewer’s eye to a focal point or main subject, often achieved through isolation, colour contrast, or placement.

Rhythm is created by repeating visual elements such as colours, shapes, or lines. It leads the eye around the artwork and creates a sense of organised movement.

Unity occurs when all the separate parts of an artwork feel as if they belong together. A unified composition feels complete and harmonious.

3. Colour Theory: Hue, Value and Intensity |

Hue is the name we give to a pure colour, such as red, blue, or green. It is the most basic attribute that distinguishes one colour from another.

Primary colours are red, yellow, and blue. They cannot be created by mixing other pigments, but all other colours are mixed from these three.

Complementary colours are pairs of hues that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, such as red and green. When placed side by side, they create strong contrast and appear brighter.

Tint and shade describe how light or dark a colour is. A tint is made by adding white to a hue, while a shade is made by adding black. Both are essential for creating value and form.

Warm and cool colours divide the colour wheel. Warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) suggest heat and appear to advance. Cool colours (blues, greens, purples) suggest calm and seem to recede.

4. Drawing and Mark-Making: Line, Tone and Texture |

Contour drawing focuses on the outline and surface edges of a subject. Artists draw the lines slowly while observing carefully, often without looking at the paper, to improve hand-eye coordination.

Hatching is a shading technique that uses parallel lines drawn closely together. The denser the lines, the darker the value appears.

Cross-hatching builds on hatching by layering sets of parallel lines at different angles. This creates a wider range of tones and a more solid feel.

Stippling uses countless small dots to build up value and texture. Areas with more dots packed tightly together appear darker.

Blending is the smoothing of shading or colour transitions, usually with a blending stump, finger, or soft brush. It eliminates harsh lines and creates a soft, gradual gradation.

5. Painting Media and Techniques |

Watercolour wash is a thin, translucent layer of watercolour paint applied evenly across the paper. It is often used for skies, backgrounds, or initial colour blocking.

Impasto is a technique where paint
