1. The Visual Elements |
Line: A mark made by a moving point, having length and direction. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, diagonal, straight, curved, thick or thin. They lead the eye around a composition and express movement or emotion.
Shape: A two-dimensional, enclosed area defined by lines, colours or textures. Shapes can be geometric (such as squares and circles) or organic (free-form, irregular). Shapes form the basic building blocks of composition.
Form: A three-dimensional object having height, width and depth. In drawing and painting, form is created using shading, highlights and perspective to suggest volume. Sculpture deals with actual form.
Colour: The element produced when light reflects off an object and enters the eye. It has three main properties: hue (name), value (lightness/darkness) and intensity (saturation). Colour greatly affects mood.
Texture: The surface quality of an object, either actual (tactile, rough or smooth) or implied (visual representation of texture). Artists use texture to add richness and realism.
Space: The area around, between or within objects. Positive space is the subject; negative space is the background or empty area. Managing positive and negative space strengthens composition.
Value (Tone): The lightness or darkness of a colour. Adding white creates a tint (high value), adding black creates a shade (low value). Value gives form depth and contrast.
2. Principles of Design |
Balance: The distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance mirrors elements on either side of a central axis; asymmetrical balance uses different objects of equal visual weight to create stability.
Contrast: The difference between elements, such as light and dark, rough and smooth, large and small. High contrast attracts attention and creates drama.
Emphasis: The part of an artwork that first catches the viewer’s eye – the focal point. It can be created through contrast, isolation or placement.
Movement: The path the viewer’s gaze follows through the artwork, often directed by lines, edges, shapes and colours. Movement can be literal or implied.
Pattern: A repeating design element such as lines, shapes or colours. Patterns can create rhythm and unity, and are commonly used in decorative art.
Rhythm: Visual rhythm is created by repeating elements with variation, similar to musical beat. It can be regular, flowing or random, giving a sense of organised movement.
Unity: The feeling of harmony between all parts of an artwork. Unity ensures that nothing seems out of place and the piece holds together as a whole.
3. Colour Theory |
Colour Wheel: A circular diagram that shows the relationships between primary, secondary and tertiary hues. It is an essential tool for choosing colour harmonies.
Primary Colours: Red, yellow and blue. These colours cannot be made by mixing any other colours. All other hues are derived from them.
Secondary Colours: Orange (red + yellow), green (yellow + blue) and purple (blue + red). They are created by mixing two primary colours in equal amounts.
Tertiary Colours: Produced by mixing a primary with an adjacent secondary, e.g. red-orange, yellow-green. They add nuance and subtlety to your palette.
Complementary Colours: Pairs of colours directly opposite on the colour wheel (red/green, blue/orange, yellow/purple). They produce maximum contrast and can make each other appear brighter.
Analogous Colours: Colours that sit side by side on the colour wheel, e.g. blue, blue-green, green. They create a serene and comfortable visual experience.
Warm and Cool Colours: Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) evoke heat, energy and passion; cool colours (blue, green, purple) suggest calm, distance and coolness.
Tint, Shade and Tone: Tint = colour + white, shade = colour + black, tone = colour + grey. These variations allow artists to model form and create depth without changing hue.
4. Drawing and Painting Techniques |
Hatching: A shading technique using closely spaced, parallel lines. The spacing and thickness of lines control the value. Hatching adds texture and volume.
Cross-hatching: Layering intersecting sets of parallel lines at angles to one another. It builds darker values and a more complex texture than single hatching.
Stippling: Creating tone and texture using many small dots. Denser dots produce darker areas; sparse dots create lighter areas. It is a slow but detailed technique.
Blending: Smoothly merging colours or tones so there is no visible transition. Artists use brushes, blending stumps or fingers to create soft, realistic gradients.
Scumbling: A dry-brush technique where a thin, opaque layer of paint is lightly dragged over an underpainting, allowing bits of the lower layer to show through for a broken, textured effect.
Glazing: Applying a transparent or semi-transparent layer of colour over a dried area. Glazing modifies the underlying colour without hiding it, building luminous depth.
Sgraffito: Scratching through a top layer of paint or plaster to reveal a contrasting colour underneath. It produces sharp, linear patterns and lively surfaces.
5. Sculpture and 3D Forms |
Carving: A subtractive process where material is cut away from a solid block (stone, wood) to reveal the desired form. It requires planning as material cannot be replaced.
Modelling: An additive process where a pliable material like clay or wax is built up and shaped by hand or tools. It allows easy refinement of form.
Casting: A method where a liquid material (plaster, molten metal) is poured into a mould and allowed to harden. The mould is then removed to reveal the sculpture.
Assemblage: A sculptural technique of composing a work from found objects or everyday materials, often stuck or welded together. It challenges traditional notions of sculpture.
Relief: A sculpture in which forms project from a flat background. Low relief (bas-relief) has shallow depth; high relief has deep carving, almost detached from the background.
Armature: An internal framework or skeleton, often made of wire, supporting sculptural materials like clay or plaster. It provides strength and helps hold the shape.
6. Printmaking Basics |
Relief Printing: A process where the raised surface of a block (such as lino or woodcut) is inked and pressed onto paper. The cutaway areas remain white. It is direct and bold.
Intaglio: A method where ink is held in incised grooves on a metal plate. The surface is wiped clean, and damp paper under high pressure picks up the ink from the grooves.
